Schmidt
159 S Amulet Ave
Mesa, AZ 85208
From Summer, 2023,
Alumni Bulletin: Richard D. Schmidt Jr. '52, Mesa,
Ariz., Feb. 26, 2023. Mr. Schmidt was president of
Delta Upsilon fraternity and team manager for the 1950 undefeated
football team. He sold hospital communications equipment for
Executone. He was very active in regional groups for Lehigh
wherever he lived. Lehigh was honored to present him with the Alumni
Award in 2017. His child, Curtis Schmidt '75, and
grandchildren, Joshua Harriman '12, Jill Neary '12 and
Alivia Gould '16, are members of the Lehigh family.
From
Bob Hoyt, 6/8/23: I received a letter from
Carolyn Schmidt that her husband, Richard Donald
Schmidt, Jr. born June 27, 1930, died February 26th,
2023. Dick is survived by his wife and one
son, three daughters and six stepdaughters. I saw him last
at our 70th Reunion.
As Class Correspondent I asked ask for some Reunion Feedback
- Dick wrote:
Hoyt, you missed out. Carolyn and I went to all
the major activities. We came from Arizona and are glad we
made the long trip. We were with our son, Curt ‘75
and a granddaughter, Alivia ’16, from Maine. Curt
received the Alumni Award on Thursday, same as I received in
2017. Lehigh has the most beautiful campus I have ever
seen. We should be pleased and proud of the planning and
conservation done by the Lehigh team. We are going to Maine
for grandson’s wedding. We may be getting too old for all
this traveling, but what the hell!! Like
Bob Hoyt, we sold our home and moved into a
retirement facility. They feed us and clean up after us and
provide many activities. There is still much in the storage
facility. I stopped working, part time, 18 months ago -
Arthritis and back problems. We should start planning for
our next reunion in 2027 and
Hoyt, try to be there on time. June 2022, 70th

Recap of life with yours truly: Married 34 years, four kids
(3 daughters), 2nd marriage to Carolyn added 6 more
girls for a total of 10 kids, 20 grandkids and 18 Great
Grand Kids. They live everywhere!
I spent my life in sales as salesman, sales manager,
regional manager, sales trainer and enjoyed it all! I
worked with my Dad in Brook Chevrolet, Bound Brook, NJ, then
with Executone, specializing in hospital products for about
38 years.
I "retired" but worked for a local courier service, learned
the ropes and started my own service. Had both knees
replaced (not related). Ten years ago I got bored again so
started driving cars for Enterprise.
In my spare time I started and became president of two
Jaycee Chapters in NJ; president of the Somerset County Auto
Dealers Association: active in local Republican activities;
was on the Montgomery Township (NJ) Parks and Recreation
Commission for 16 years and was Chairman for 10 years;
served on the Montgomery Planning Board (Advisor and
Alternate); was a 4H Horse club leader and county 4H board
member and more. After moving to Arizona, I was on the
Fountain Hills Parks and Recreation Commission for six
years, chairman for three.
My Arizona License plate number is "LEHIGH". I have been
active in whatever Alumni Club was nearby and President for
the Arizona Club for many years. I have been to all of our
class reunions. I also made most of the 1950 (UNDEFEATED)
football team reunions and organized the 65th.
I will turn 90 in June and have enjoyed all

I received several e-mails regarding C.J. McCollum:
Pete Shaw

Wally Field
all brought me up to date on C. J.'s early doings in the NBA.
Pete
mentioned C. J.'s pre-draft article in Sports Illustrated titled "Poked,
Prodded...then Picked,” in which he writes about his own experience leading up
to the draft. C.J. is indeed a well-rounded, classy guy. - Winter 2013

Dick Schmidt's grandson,
Josh, will be graduating in the Class of 2012, the day after our
reunion. Dick goes on to say that he is driving for Enterprise

Arizona.
From Fall 2009 Bulletin:
Another wounded warrior,Dick Schmidt, had his left knee replaced
in November '08, and after he fully recovers, he says he'll have the
right knee done too. I want to share a letter
Dick wrote to his grandson,
Josh, prior to his becoming a member of the Lehigh Class of 2012, a truly
beautiful letter.
"Josh, first, I am so pleased that you chose to apply to Lehigh.
Second, I am really pleased that you and Lehigh decided to accept each
other. It is difficult to express how much I love Lehigh. My four years
there as a student were some of the best I have ever had. I learned from
some great professors and some of the assistants (many became professors
later). I am so impressed with the many new programs and methods for
learning that are in place today. We never had the interdepartmental
programs combining science with art, art with business, engineering with
art, etc. I am almost jealous of the possibilities you now have. Also, at
Lehigh I became involved with so many men who are still today my best
friends, Many I see every 5 or 10 years, but we still have so much in
common. The guys I met on the football team (and I was just the manager)
are as important to me now as they were when we were students. You've met a
few of them when you were there for the dedication honoring Coach Leckonby.
My fraternity brothers are still my brothers. I communicate with several
regularly via e-mail, and we have a blast when we get together at reunions.
There are many other Lehigh guys, not in my fraternity or on the football
team, whom I got to know in class or just around campus or at fraternity
parties or functions and organizations I participated in who are also good
friends. I met them 50 plus years ago, and we still enjoy being together.
You will have some of the same experiences and you will have others (after
all, there are women on campus now), but they will be very important to you,
I just realized that you will graduate from Lehigh the same week that I will
be on campus to celebrate my 60th reunion in 2012. Won't that be a blast?
I am very proud of you, and know that you will have a great time and
receive a great education. I am very proud to sign my name
Dick Schmidt, Lehigh '52, '75P, '12GP"
From Spring 2008 Alumni Bulletin: I'll bet you didn't know
that our class has the two oldest delivery boys in America. It's true.
Dick Schmidt
in Mesa and yours truly (Pat Moran
(deceased) in Tucson. Let me amplify: Dick has been
in the courier business for a number of years and runs his own tidy
operation. When I realized that I couldn't play the kind of golf I
wanted to play because of my heart problems, I contacted
Dick
and inquired about the courier business. He gave me some salient tips,
and within two weeks I called 40 companies, interviewed 5 and was behind
the wheel. Thanks, Dick
Spring 2007 - Carolyn
and
Dick Schmidt
sent a post card from Maui, where the snorkeling and coral were spectacular.
Spring 2006 -
My Arizona buddy,
Pat Moran
(deceased), e‑mailed his concern for my health
and says he has his own courier service and is driving 250 miles a day
just in greater Phoenix.
From the Fall, 2003 Column: "I received a note from my
Arizona neighbor, who is actually no miles away! Dick Schmidt
is busy as parks and recreation commissioner in his hometown of Fountain
Hills. Dick is also president of ADOG, the Dog Park
Support organization, and he "moonlights" for a local courier service,.
delivering documents a over the Valley of the Sun. His
wife, Carolyn, makes exquisite fabric handbags, but a problem
back has reduced this creative activity,"
From 50th Reunion Book, 2002
- '52 and proud of it. Hardly a day goes by that I do not have
thoughts of Lehigh and my family. I thank God for my 4 years at
Lehigh and the great 50 years since.
I have 4 wonderful kids:
Curt (Lehigh '75), Dede, Jana and Jennifer.
Carolyn and I have been married for 5 years and my extended family
includes an additional 6 daughters!! We have a total of 19
grandchildren. The kids are' all over: 2 in New Jersey, North
Carolina, Tennessee, 3 in Maine (Carolyn's state), Michigan and 2
in Arizona.
I have been involved with sales
all my working life: cars (Chevrolet and Oldsmobile) with my Dad in
Bound Brook, NJ (1952-1960) and then communications with Executone in
New Jersey (1960-1983), in Colorado (1983-1988) and out of Scottsdale,
AZ (1988-1997). I concentrated on sales to hospitals and the last
10 years, I traveled all 50 states and Canada assisting our
distributors.
From 1962 to 1983, I lived in
Montgomery Township, NJ. I converted an 1840 barn into a home, and
we raised the kids there with horses, dogs, cats, etc. I was
involved in the community with Jaycees, 4H Horse Club Leader, Historical
Society, Church, Republican Party and Recreation Commission (Chairman
for over 10 years).
Since moving to Arizona, for the
past 2 1/2 years I have served as a Park and Recreation Commissioner for
Fountain Hills and for about 10 years have been the President of the
Arizona Lehigh Club.
Post retirement, I have assisted
Carolyn with her business. She designs and makes beautiful
fabric handbags and jackets in our home. We sell them at Art Shows
in Arizona, Colorado, California and Nevada.
Check it out: My Arizona license
plate for my Buick is "LEHIGH'.
Summer 2001 - Toward the
latter part of 2000,
Pat Moran
(deceased) played host to Carolyn and Dick Schmidt.
Carolyn and Daz did some aromatherapy while Dick and I
hiked in Sabino Canyon.
Spring, 2001:
Pat Moran
(deceased) took his annual trek East in September and
witnessed a Lehigh / Cornell game. At halftime, the 50th
anniversary of the 1950 undefeated team was celebrated. On the
field were 31 of the original 42 players; imagine, not only are 31 of
these guys still with us, but 74 percent of them returned!
Of those back, 11 were from our class -
Bob Borofski
(deceased),
Stan
Gedney (deceased),
Pete Ginesi

Lon Haines
(deceased),
Bill
Henderson (deceased),
Dave
Mesick
(deceased),
Joe Orr
(deceased),
Dick
Pradetto
(deceased),
Walt Pullar
(deceased),
Dick Schmidt
and
Bill
Smith (deceased). The local newspaper on Sunday after the
Cornell game remarked that the '50 team not only had superb athletes,
but apparently, very healthy ones!
Fall, 2000: A release
from the Fountain Hills (Arizona) Times states that
Dick Schmidt ha been appointed to a three-year term on the Parks
& Recreation Commission in this Phoenix suburb. Dick, is
president of the Lehigh Club of Arizona and host of the annual
Lehigh-Lafayette telecast in Phoenix, is retired from Executone after 35
years in the sales division. Dick and his lovely wife,
Carolyn, are marvelous hosts and dedicated Lehigh boosters.

Spring 2009 - Just before deadline,
Mike Seiler,

passed away in November 2008. We reminisced for about an hour, and
Mike
shared that he got married in 1941; served in the Army 1944‑46; worked
at the Steel during school; after Lehigh, worked for 34 years for
Daimler Chrysler; and retired in 1986.
Mike mentioned that another of his Town group pals,

February 2009 letter to
Pat Moran
(deceased)
-
Hello Pat,
Per
our phone conversation on Thurs. I've enclosed the Obit of
Frank A. Hoagey
ME Class of '52. that his wife Betty sent me. We appreciate
your letting the classmates know of his death. He and
Constantine
"Gus" Economy (deceased) and I were from the Town group and spent
many cram sessions together during our years at Lehigh. We
continued that friendship by coming together for the Reunions. I
also was a part of both their wedding parties in our senior year.
I was the OLD man of the group having married in 1941 and had two little
girls to help me through my studies. I worked at the Bethlehem
Steel all through school and served in the Army from 1944 to 1946.
In
2007 Frank
and I were making arrangements to attend the class 55"' reunion when
he had a heart valve operation and suffered a stroke from which he never
recovered. He was partially paralyzed until his death in Nov '08.
Gus
Economy died in Feb 1998 of a heart attack and I am not
sure that information ever was passed on to you. I'll contact the Alumni
office to check. I have sent a copy of
Frank's
Obit to the Alumni Office.
Thank
you for the fine job of keeping the news flowing over the years. I
really look forward to opening up to your column first thing when the
latest Bulletin arrives. Wishing you the best in good health.
In a
side note to
me,
Mike promised: "I intend to provide you with a capsule
update on my own history and status thru the E‑mail route. I may
be the oldest surviving member of the class. I'll be 89 on June
18'."
November 2001 - Plan to be there for the reunion God willing. Wintering in Port Aransas Texas to escape the Michigan Upper Peninsula (Yooper) snows. Best wishes for the Holidays.

Bob Hoyt
writes, Spring 2004, I had a nice get together with John and his
wife, Joan, in York, PA on Saturday, May 1st. I had last
visited him over twenty-five years ago when I was some sort of a
Regional Alumni Vice President and had attended a York Lehigh Club
dinner and maybe even made a speech.
I had forgotten that John
lives in a house almost entirely built by him with his own hands.
I wonder how many of our class can make that claim. Of course John's
career, after he left engineering, was to build houses and his father
was a shop teacher in the high school, so he had lots of experience.
John was an usher in my wedding and he came to my wife's memorial
service, so I wanted to show him some pictures and talk about things
that happened many years ago. It was a fun afternoon.
Bob Hoyt
writes, Spring 2003, that while on a Nantucket vacation, he visited with
Pete Shaw

Bruce Hill

Frank
Sgambelluri
Deceased 9/28/2010
Received this email on January 5, 2018 and am asking for help from
Frank's friends. Let me know if you have information I can pass on
to Stefania.
My name is Stefania, I am 30 and I am from Naples, Italy.
During Christmas holidays I've found the letters that I exchanged years
ago with my American relatives, among which Frank and Barbara
Sgambelluri, living in Stroudsburg. Many years have passed and I am
trying to get in touch with them. I came across your website and read
about them. I was wondering if you could help me to get in touch with
the members of the family that are still alive. Wishing you all
the best for the new year, and greetings from Italy! Stefania
Frank
J. Sgambelluri '52, Stroudsburg, Pa., Sept. 28, 2010. He was a retired
electrical engineer who served as a contracting officer of the nuclear
warhead division at the Picattiny Arsenal in Dover, N.J. He was a U.S. Army
veteran. He served as chair and committee member for his class reunions and
was a class agent and Phonothon volunteer. He was a member of Tau Beta Pi.
Winter
2011 Alumni Bulletin: Just before deadline, we learned that Frank
Sgambelluri died. Barbara called to say that Frank
passed away in late September of pancreatic cancer. Frank knew
of his illness for only a short time and did not suffer. Frank
and Barbara were guests of ours twice here in Tucson, and we got
to know Frank as a physically and intellectually strong man who
was very proud of his Italian heritage. Frank was a tireless class
agent and reunion committee chair. His pride and joy was our 50th
Reunion Yearbook. The class will miss Frank, and we send
our condolences to Barbara and family.
Summer 2010 Alumni Bulletin: An
updated medical report from Frank Sgambelluri has both he and wife Barbara on the mend. They both had medical challenges in recent years, but Frank says they are doing a lot better now. Keep plugging, kids. Our prayers are
with you.
Fall 2009 Bulletin -
Daz
and I had lost touch with
Barbara
and
Frank Sgambelluri;
their Christmas card and e‑mail in late 2008 filled in some gaps. A later
e‑mail mentioned that
Barbara
was coping with chemo and doctors' visits,
and although not up to speed 100 percent, they do see their kids and are able to
do light chores. Bless you two. Keep pluggin'!
Fall 2007 Bulletin -
Frank Sgambelluri's research showed that
581 of us graduated, about 395 are still alive, and 41 came back to
celebrate our 55th Reunion together. I think that is remarkable.
From Fall 2006 Alumni Bulletin:
In
early May, Frank Sgarnbelluri and wife Barbara visited us
(Pat Moran,
deceased) here in Tucson. They were here
about six years ago and are welcome guests. We visited the
Arizona‑Sonora Desert Museum, Kartchner Caverns State Park and listened
to mariachi music at a local Mexican bistro. A fun time for all. Frank
and Barbara live in Stroudsburg, Pa., and maintain a summer home
in Seaside Park, NJ. They are extensive travelers: Ireland in 2002 with
Bob Flynn
(deceased) and wife Anne '74
M.Ed., Holland / Belgium in 2004, and Italy in 2005, where they attended
cooking school and visited Frank's relatives.
November 2005:
As of November 1, 2005 wife Barbara
and I are doing fine. Thanks to check-up visits every four or five months
to our fussy family doctor and a variety of pills, our numbers are all in
the "good" range. Have you noticed, however, that the experts keep
improving the numbers so that you are always a little shy of the goal.
For those who have lost their copy or haven't had one, I have nine
remaining copies of the 50th Reunion Book. For $3.85 postage, I'll a send
one right out. My address is 600 Martz Road, Stroudsburg, PA 18360-8850.
Summer 2003: Barbara and Frank Sgambelluri write from Stroudsburg, Pa., that they are well and are counting their blessings in 2003
From 50th Reunion Book, 2002 - During my senior year at high school, I made 2 discoveries that profoundly affected my life. I met my wife, Barbara, and I learned about a great engineering school called Lehigh. At Lehigh, I quickly learned that this was the big leagues. For some of my courses in the E.E. curriculum, survival was the main goal.
My first job was with Curtiss-Wright in Woodridge, NJ working on jet engine fuel control and ignition systems. A draft deferment I got when hired ran out in November 1953 and I found myself shipped to Camp Gordon, Georgia, near Augusta. We were married by then, so Barbara came down and, with her BS / RN degree, got a job teaching student nurses at the University Hospital. In November 1955, we were freed at last.
In April 1958, I went to Picatinny Arsenal in NJ to work for the Army again - this time at better working conditions and pay - developing on-board arming and firing systems for nuclear warheads. The most rewarding project was the Pershing 11, which contributed so much to the breakdown of the USSR.
I retired in 1986 to the Poconos for elbow room that we didn't have in NJ. We enjoy traveling in and out of the U.S. and spending time at our house in Seaside Park, NJ. We see our children, Richard (born 1955) and Diane (1959) and 5 grandchildren very often, so we really have few reasons to complain. It has been a very good ride so far.
Winter, 2001: I spoke to Frank Sgambelluri, and he asked that I remind you to get your 50-year resumes and photos to him for the 50th Reunion Yearbook. Frank has a real sense of history, writes well, and will produce a memorable tome. We are sorry to hear he have had some kidney stone problems and had to cancel an Alaskan trip. We trust you are feeling better.
January 2002: By now you must know how the selection of a new logo by some mysterious committee has made many alumni angry, to say the least. The website lays out the problem and includes many comments from alumni, mostly the younger classes. I think the website should be brought to the attention of classes of our vintage to allow them to participate in this matter which is far from trivial, as some alumni believe. Could you fire out an Email to your extensive address list so we can get more involved? Hope you have a great 2002 and can make it to the reunion. Frank
Spring, 2001: World travelers Barbara and
Frank Sgambelluri venture to Italy often to see Frank's relatives in Naples. This summer they also took in the Passion Play at Oberammergau (Germany) where the theater has been completely modernized and the production is as elaborate as any at the Met in New York. While in Italy, Frank mentioned swimming at Amalfi, seeing the ruins at Herculanum and getting to the top of Vesuvius.

D Peter ("Pete") Shaw
February 11, 2015
Bob Hoyt writes, January 2016 - Friends from Plainfield. I am in
receipt of a note from Barbara Shaw who is Peter's
daughter-in-law. This is in response to my annual Christmas card.
Peter died about a year ago. Garry and his wife, Donna,
went to his funeral. This note from Barbara says that Dotsie
died this past September. She was riding her bike fell and suffered a
brain injury that took her life. Thanks,
Bob
D. Peter Shaw, Barrington,
R.I., Feb. 11, 2015. Pete played for the Lehigh tennis team and
was a brother of Phi Sigma Kappa and Delta Upsilon fraternities. He
worked as a metallurgical engineer for Technical Materials. His son
Michael D. Shaw '92, is a Lehigh alumnus.
Peter Shaw : born
June 10, 1930 died February 11, 2015
The
dearest man in my life died peacefully last night at the Hospice Center in
Providence, RI. All the family had visited that day or the days
before so Peter was always surrounded by his loved family. Peter
was a giant of a man – in personality, character, honesty, beloved by all.
All
of you knew and loved him. There was never a day that he did not express
his love for me either verbally or usually in the kitchen wrapping his arms
around my waist as I was trying to prepare dinner. I'd say, "Yes, I know
and I love you too."
He
was a giver – a generous giver of time in many volunteer activities. He
even drew up the tennis schedule for a group of younger players but his name
wasn't on the schedule. He said they were too good for him these days.
He
loved watching the kids' soccer games, hockey, cross country, lacrosse, and
basketball, and we both loved the New England Patriots games with Sue and
Steve Story.
He
loved meat but I would try to steer him away from that by offering fish and
many non-meat meals. He would say, “Dotsie can take a tiny bit of
leftovers and create a decent meal for our dinner.
These are just random thoughts I have this morning, the morning after I lost
my dearest friend, lover, companion, and soul-mate to let you know about
this event.
For
all of you, my love and gratitude for your care and concern which has helped
sustain me through this.
Love, Dotsie
I received several e-mails regarding C.J. McCollum: Pete
Shaw, Dick Schmidt and
Wally Field all brought me up to date on
C. J.'s early doings in the NBA.
Pete mentioned C.
J.'s pre-draft article in Sports Illustrated titled "Poked,
Prodded...then Picked,” in which he writes about his own experience
leading up to the draft. C.J. is indeed a well-rounded, classy guy. -

From 50th Reunion Book, 2002 - 1952: Began working at Metals Engineering (NJ) as powered metal metallurgist ... but draft eligible! 1955: Joined Coast Guard for 3 years as officer trainee followed by 2-year stint on weather ship (USCGC Winnebago) out of Honolulu T.H. 1958: Began sales engineering training at Beryllium Corporation, Reading, PA and year later assigned to Chicago selling beryllium products in the Midwest territory ... enjoyed single life and Young Republican activity. 1965: Met and married my wonderful wife of 36 years, Dorothy Banker, and moved to Evanston, IL. Beryllium merged to become Kawecki-Berylco Inds. Soon 2 sons arrived - Navy Seabee Jeffrey (32) and physical therapist Michael (31, Lehigh '92). 1972: Left KBI and moved to Barrington, RI where occupational therapist Sarah (28) was born 2 weeks later. Began a new career as Administrative Manager at Technical Materials Inc. (TMI), a fledgling clad metal strip producer which grew rapidly when gold prices soared. Our inlay cladding of metal strip provided an effective way to conserve precious metal usage in stamping parts ... further growth continued as we developed new strip combinations by solder coating, electron beam welding, contouring or selective electroplating for many new customers in the electronic and automotive industries. 1982: TMI sold to Brush Wellman, Cleveland and continues operations as their subsidiary in Lincoln, RI. 1995 (till now): Retired and have stayed busy playing tennis, volunteering, boating, fundraising, traveling, cemetery commission and Presbyterian Church activity ... feel busier than when working for a living. However, am blessed with good physical health and my sweet wife (Dotsie) and 7 grandchildren. We attended our 45th LU Reunion and hope to see many more classmates at 50th.
June 2001 - Retired in 1995 after working 23 years in various sales / administration positions at Technical Materials, Inc. (TMI) in Lincoln, RI, now a subsidiary of Brush Wellman. Married 36 years to my Illinois sweetheart, Dotsie, with 3 children, one of whom graduated from Lehigh in 1992....all married and with 6 grandchildren and one due in October. Still playing tennis regularly and thoroughly enjoying the role of grandparent and volunteer worker here in Barrington, RI. Attended our 45th Reunion and hope to see a lot more of my Lehigh classmates in 2002. |

From 50th Reunion Book, 2002 - After working for Worthington Pump for a few months, I was called into the Corps of Engineers and served as a Company Exec in Korea.
I returned to Worthington in Buffalo, NY as an Application Engineer in 1954. Later assignments included District Sales Manager in Indianapolis, Cleveland and Houston, and finally Vice President of Sales in Houston.
I retired from the successor company, Dresser-Rand, after 47 years of service.
Retirement lasted 5 days. I am presently Engineered Products Sales Manager for one of the world's largest gas compressor service companies, Universal Compression.
My wife of 46 years, Pat, raised 4 daughters who have blessed us with 9 grandchildren. We're fortunate, they all live close by in Texas.

From
Bill Erdman, WebMaster: Life has a way of
giving each of us a wake-up call every so often. Today I received
mine from Kathy when she called about Harry's death.
Harry and I both went to Mt Lebanon High School - in fact we rode
back and forth many times and each trip was a memorable event. For
example, Harry and another Lehigh Classmate,
John Stallings
(deceased), both played trumpet
and enjoyed playing them as we went through the Pennsylvania Turn Pike
tunnels - both of them hanging out the windows and playing as loudly as
they could!
I've stopped at Harry's homes
several times and got to know Kathy and some of their kids. I
will miss him and his numerous phone calls asking about the Reunions.
Rest well, Harry, and keep blowing your horn for all heaven to
hear.

Alumni Bulletin - In
the 20 or so years since I've been your correspondent, this is the most
difficult column I've had to write, My dear friend of 61 years, Bill
Smith, passed away in August. Bill was a Marine Corp veteran
and member of the 1950 undefeated football team, and he LOVED Lehigh.
He was honored with the prestigious Alumni Award, the highest alumni
award granted, for his volunteer service in working on our past four
highly successful reunions. Bill was Lehigh. God bless you,
Bill‑you are missed. Our collective 1952 hearts go out to Bill's
widow, Barbara, and their four children, including Joanna

Fall,
2007 Alumni Bulletin - First, let me
thank Reunion chairman
Bill Smith and his staff for a wonderful 55th Reunion. Bill
has run very successful reunions without much fanfare or kudos. Thank you,
Bill.
I'm sure your efforts had something to do with the class winning two
awards, one for attendance and the other for parade performance.
June
2007 - We had a great reunion. Food was great, weather
was decent, but the people ---they were special.
Jad Doubleday
(deceased) was supposed to come but
he got very sick and cancelled. Did you know
Herb Kindle died? He was
listed in the memorial booklet as class of 62. When I got home I looked
him up then called his home. His wife answered and confirmed that
Herb died in January on their 18th
anniversary.
Our class won two awards-----one for attendance and one
for parade performance
Spring
2007 - Post card from
Barbara
and
Bill Smith,
sent from Charleston, S.C., where they have a timeshare.
December
2006 - Thanks Bill----I was at Lehigh for the Leckonby gala
befoe the Harvard game. I wondered where
Borofski was. About two weeks
later I received an email from Dick Gabriel. He had sent Bob
some pictures and Bob’s wife then informed him of Bob’s
death this spring. Too bad. Bob was a good man.
My sister
sent me a clipping----Beckley Smith died recently--he also lived
in Florida. Bill
July 2004 - Barb and I went to reunion in June. We saw
Bob Sakson very briefly. Other people saw
Fortneys but we were not that lucky. In May we were in Mt. Lebanon on our way back from granddaughters graduation from Dayton U. My sister is in the Baptist retirement home on Castle Shannon Blvd. She likes it. She can come and go as she pleases and she sees lots of people. Bill
From 50th Reunion Book, 2002 - Barb and I were married June 16, 1951, and one year later, on our first anniversary - we graduated. We migrated to Pittsburgh where I started training for my first sales position. What followed were moves to the Chicago area, Cleveland area and Toronto - before moving to southern New Jersey in 1963.
These moves involved 4 sales and sales management positions eventually leading to a partnership in a sales distribution company in the Philadelphia / South Jersey area. Our main products have been industrial ventilation and infra-red heating equipment.
The first 8 years of our marriage produced 4 children - 3 girls and 1 boy. We now have 5 grandchildren - the oldest a sophomore at Dayton University. Our daughters graduated from Muskingum College, Wittenburg University and Lehigh. Our son graduated from the U.S. Naval Academy. Our daughter who graduated from Lehigh in I.R. in 1979 received an alumni award in 1999.
Despite retirement in June 1999, we remain quite busy. We are both active in the Methodist Church, we both have civic responsibilities and both are active in alumni affairs. Barb went back to her 50th reunion at Cedar Crest College, we went to reunion at Lehigh and we celebrated our 50th anniversary - all in June of 2001.
The anniversary was made very special by our "kids" who arranged for our entire wedding party to be at our 50th celebration - a total and wonderful surprise for us.
Winter, 2001: Bill Smith reports that the reunion fund committee meeting in May was attended by
Leidheiser (deceased),
Fortney (the co chairs),
Bob
McCann (deceased) (Class President),
Adams,
Missimer
(deceased),
Sgambelluri,
Kiesling,
Wilbern
(deceased),

Kuss,
Muskin,
Ruestow
(deceased) and Smith. Most
of the talk was about fund-raising (as of July 15, 2001 we have raised
$4.8 million toward our $8 million goal).
Bill writes December 29th, 2001 - Reunion yellow cards have all but stopped coming. Latest count
This is only about 33% of the class heard from. Bill
Fall, 2001: I'm happy to report that 25 Comfort Suites rooms (3rd and Brodhead) and 10 Hotel Bethlehem (newly refurbished) rooms have been reserved for the 50tb Reunion. Those who want to get a "leg-up," can reserve for June 2002 by communicating directly with the motel or the hotel. Call Radisson Hotel Bethlehem (610) 625-5000; or Comfort Suites (610)882-9700 and ask for the Class of '52 block of rooms.
I reserved the UC for our class dinner Saturday night. If the class wants something more elaborate, we have time to change the site, but, in the meantime, we have a convenient and reasonable place reserved. Saturday lunch will be provided gratis outside President Farrington's home. This is customary for the 50th Reunion class. All we have to do is show up!
May 2001 - Good afternoon----I just saw
Don Beck---We are both in the 65 club in Haddonfield, so I see him most Thursday afternoons. He is also in the Haddonfield Legion Post and he marched with them in the Memorial Day Parade.
I tried to call
Herb Kindle
(deceased) the other night but I had the wrong area code----I hope--I will try him again tonight.
Barb and I go to Cedar Crest this Saturday for her 50th. S0---Saturday afternoon I will probably get over to campus. Maybe have lunch at the new Brew Pub where Push and Pull used to be cross town.
Next weekend is Lehigh reunion. We are going up on Friday and stay thru the Saturday parade. Kind of a spy trip to prepare for next year.
Bill Smith
Spring, 2001:
Pat Moran
(deceased) took his annual trek East in September and witnessed three Lehigh victories (Penn, Princeton and Cornell). His thanks to Barb and
Bill Smith and Ceily and
Wally Field for opening up their homes to him.
At halftime (Cornell game), the 50th anniversary of the 1950 undefeated team was celebrated. On the field were 31 of the original 42 players; imagine, not only are 31 of these guys still with us, but 74 percent of them returned! Of those back, 11 were from our class -

Circa 2016
From Summer 2017 Alumni Bulletin: Betsey
and
Mayo Snyder
were one of
Daz
and my favorite '52 couples. Always fun, upbeat and full of
life. When I heard of Mayo's passing, I wrote to
Betsey and she responded in kind. We commiserated. Mayo's
life was full—he loved Lehigh, sailing, service in the Navy
and hockey. His specialty, when working, was city
planning. One of the highlights of his career was that, as
a consultant to the government of Brazil, he helped in the
selection of a site for the new capital, what would become
Brasilia.
Mayo had advanced degrees from the University of Illinois and
MIT. Mayo was one of the truly "neat guys” and will be missed.
RIP,
Mayo.

From Spring2014 Alumni Bulletin:
Another of my favorite '52ers,
E Mayo Snyder, of Cooperstown, N.Y., has managed to grow "olde”gracefully
along with wife, Betsey. Their Christmas letter is a treasure. In it,
Mayo hoped that my citizenship papers
were in order, in light of Arizona Governor Brewer's interest in these
matters.
Mayo
went on to take issue with an eastern Pennsylvania promoter who
characterized Lehigh as "the Harvard of the Lehigh Valley.” What a come
down, says
Mayo.
Lehigh has many attributes that Harvard cannot match. In his letter,
Mayo
touched on the future of Lehigh's fraternity system, how Cooperstown's
opera house complements the overwhelming popularity of the Baseball
Hall of Fame, and some golf tidbits. He ended his letter by saying that
glaucoma and diabetes have pretty much ended plans for the Grand Tour.
The New York Times travel section is as close as they get. Good luck
you two, and thanks for a great letter.

"tripping the light fantastic" with two new knees.
Spring 2006 - Sent

a very nice Christmas
card. They took a Lehigh trip to Sicily.
Summer 2003: Betsey and Mayo Snyder sent a great photo of their youngest grandchildren and mentioned that they had moved from Homer, N.Y, to Cooperstown, N.Y., and are enjoying "the village life."
June 3rd, 2002 -Thanks for the '52 class website. However, looking at the Mayo Snyder bio - that is another person in the undergraduate picture and Mayo's name is Ernest Mayo Snyder, not Martin Luther Snyder. His father was Martin Edgar Snyder. See you at the reunion. Betsey and Mayo Snyder
Webmaster: Oops. I didn't realize there were 3 Snyders in our class. Sorry about that
From 50th Reunion Book, 2002 - My Dad was in the Class of 1925, probably causing me to follow. Degrees: Syracuse University, BA; University of Illinois, MA; MIT, Masters in City Planning.
After the Navy and graduate schools, I worked with various architectural and engineering firms. Some projects were selecting the site for Brasilia, a program for Wild Rivers and environmental protection for Woodbridge, NJ. Eventually, I served as planning director for a Connecticut town and 2 different counties in New York state.
In Skaneateles, NY, I started a youth hockey program. This sparked the building of an artificial ice arena. An outcome of the arena was my son becoming a gold medalist in ice dancing. Several other kids who started skating in this arena have been successful Olympians in hockey and figure skating.
It was interesting serving on the Board of Directors of the New York, Susquehanna and Western Railroad. Double stack transcontinental freight trains have their origin and destination in the Susquehanna's New Jersey yard.
Betsey and I have a family including a son and 2 daughters. The daughters each have a boy and a girl. We have been married for 41 years. We now live in Cooperstown. We like the community as it offers many diversions besides baseball.
As time has gone by, I have come to realize that what I learned in my 5 semesters at Lehigh was crucial in making it possible for us to have the good life we have had.
Summer, 2001 - The best card, year in and year out, comes from Betsey and
Mayo Snyder always a picture card, of their happy faces from somewhere in the world - this year from Ellis Island. Thanks; you guys look great!
Fall, 2000: Mayo and Betsey Snyder, who send the best photo Christmas cards, sent one showing them with their grandkids, Michael and Grace, having a meal with a fully costumed pirate, complete with eye patch and sword.

Spring 2007 Alumni Bulletin - In early November (2006) I received
a number of email photos of a group of happy and good‑looking "seasoned
citizens." The location was the lovely South Carolina home of
Sarah

Harry Stowers
on Hilton Head Island. In attendance were
Scottie Malcolm

Lura,
Bob

Ann,
and
Ed Leidheiser

with
Mary Lou. Sue Ann
and
Ralph Fortney,
who also have a place on Hilton Head, joined this group for dinner. The
conversation got around to the classmates’ prowess many years ago in
varsity baseball and basketball. All agreed they were awesome
jocks. Today they are awesome bocce ball players, fortified with
copious adult beverages. Some things never change!

From
John Hanson, May, 2003:
Bill, Some very sad news. Attached you will find the
obituary for
Phil Sturiale. After his communiqué to you last year about his
cancer, I contacted him and we set up a luncheon engagement for mid November
in Freehold N.J. (a point midway between us here in N.J.). We had a
very pleasant get -together and planned on another after his return from a
winter hiatus in Florida.
On March 22 he sent out an e-mail advising of a reoccurrence of the cancer
and his inability to make the Florida trip. Subsequent to that I sent
him two e-mails inquiring of his current status. When I didn't hear from
him, I feared the worst and searched his
local newspaper. As it turned out, my search was was made the day
after he died.
A very sad ending for one of my old dorm mates and a good friend even though
we didn't see much of each other after graduation. Best regards to you
and all classmates.

From
50th Reunion Book, 2002
- During the 50 years that have elapsed since leaving Lehigh, the most
significant and meaningful events of my life have all involved my family.
Oh yes, I had a good career with what had been a great company. I
retired from AT&T Bell Laboratories, after 38 productive years with AT&T as
Department Head of Computing Technology at the Holmdel, NJ Laboratories.
Although I began and ended my AT&T career with Bell Labs, I had many diverse
assignments in several AT&T companies. One such assignment took my
family out of our Brooklyn home to the little town of Cooperstown, NY for
almost 2 years. That was a culture shock to us, but we loved it.
My family once consisted of my wife
Nina, daughters
Rosanna
and
Francesca
and son
Salvatore; however, God chose to take
Rosanna
from us at age 38.
Francesca
(Lehigh '81) is married to
Tom Bartlett
(Lehigh '80) and is the politician of the family, having successfully run
for a seat on the Pennington, NJ Township committee. The
Bartlett's
2 children (Matthew
and
Brittany) are our only grandchildren.
Salvatore
(Monmouth '77) has been married 10 years but not blessed with any children.
Since retiring in 1990, I spent my time (hopefully) being a good grandfather
and shuttling between our New Jersey condominium and our Jupiter, FL
condominium. I've been foolish enough to spend many years on both
Condominium Boards, but can now happily say I'm retired from those jobs as
well.
March 2002 -
Bill, I had every intention of joining all at our 50th, but
unfortunately, a not so nice tumor was found in my lung last month. I
gave up smoking 36 years ago, but I guess it wasn't soon enough. I've
just started Chemo this past Thursday, and if the schedule that the people
at Sloan Kettering holds up, I'll be scheduled for surgery early in June.
I'll be thinking about the reunion and wishing I was there.
Phil
October 2001: I guess your last E-mail on two more deceased "52ers
finally got to me. Here's a short update on the last 50 years.
After graduation, I joined Bell Laboratories and spent the next 38 years
holding various positions in different divisions of AT&T. Twenty eight
of those years were with Bell Labs from which I retired in 1990. My
last assignment was Department Head of Computing Technology at the Holmdel,
NJ Labs. I spent the following two years consulting before
completely retiring.
Now my wife
Nina
and I spend our summers in Monmouth Beach, NJ and our winters in Jupiter
FL..
Nina
and I have been married for 47 years. We had three children,
Salvatore
(Monmouth '77),
Rosanna
(Seton Hall '79) and
Francesca (Lehigh '81).
Rosanna
passed away in 1995.
Francesca
married
Tom Bartlett
(Lehigh '80) and is mother to our only two grandchildren. As of
now, I hope to join you at our 50th.
