July 6, 2016

John L.  Bachofer Jr.  '52, East Stroudsburg, Pa., July 6, 2016.  Mr.  Bachofer retired as vice president of Metropolitan Edison Co.  He was a member of the Tower Society.  His brother, Bruce, was a member of the Class of 1955.

October 2001- It's been a long and not too pleasant Fall for Mary and me.  She's trying to get to the bottom of a sleep apnia condition, in which she stops breathing for periods during sleep--potentially fatal.  I've just learned that I have some sort of malignancy in bone marrow, as yet not pinpointed, and probably face chemotherapy.  Accordingly, we're actively pursuing leaving our townhome in E. Stroudsburg, PA for a retirement facility, where there is some supervision, and availability and skilled nursing care, as well as a place a surviving spouse could get on with minima further disruption.  As a result, we've not been able to give much consideration to the reunion.

November 10th, 2000 - I retired ten years ago after 38 years with the GPU system.  All in one or another aspect of power generation, including a stint as Project Mgr for TMI-2.  Later on special assignment to TMI post-accident.  Very interesting work.

The last ten tears were as VP Generation for Metropolitan Edison, one of the operating subsidiaries.

Since retirement, Mary and I have enjoyed travel, including 20 Elderhostels, skiing, sailing, and scuba diving.

More recently, we've undertaken a lot of volunteer work, including a present stint as Project Mgr for Habitat for Humanity locally, building a duplex residence.

Look forward to the reunion, John

I will attend and want to ride.  My wife Carolyn died last March and I was going to go alone.  My son could not come because it was his anniversary but his wife told him come with me and celebrate any time.  He is coming with me and they made be very happy. - Dick – May 2012

My wife Carolyn past away last May and she loved coming to our reunions.  She was my official photographers and I decided to come for her.  It's been hard without her but I decided I have to continue with out her. This year is my 20th year of retirement--were does time go?  Dick – March 2012

November 2011:  My wife Carolyn passed away in May and loved coming to our reunions.  I hope I’ll be up to coming for our 60th.---- Dick

January 2008 - Not too much news.  Carolyn and I did some traveling and went to visit her sisters who live by San Juan Capistrano and the next morning the fires started in the area and was frightening to see and smell.  We flew out of John Wayne Airport for Las Vegas that Sunday evening and the view of the fires were awesome.  I live on Long Island and we just worry about too much water and a rare hurricane for which we get at least a weeks warning.  Had fun in Vegas and helped their economy.  We never bet the farm even though we don't own one.

I want to thank you for the good job you do for the class.  Wishing you and yours a happy new year.

March 2007:  Hi Bill,  The attached news article (See Ken's page) was in today's Newsday 3/31/07 showing that Ken Thomson is missing after working on his boat.  I know  this is  our classmate.  We both started work together at Sperry Gyroscope as aerospace engineers.  He also came from Chester, PA.  I also know he was an Army Lt. before starting Lehigh.  I read your listing of a Ken Thomson deceased in 2000 in our class internet site and I don't know him.  Hope to see you at the reunion.  I have my Comfort Inn reservation made already.--Your classmate, Dick Barba

Dick, Ken was listed in the deceased list with a gray background meaning that he was "Lost" not necessarily "Deceased".  Thanks for the update.  Bill

This past year has been good to us and we derive so much happiness from our children and grandchildren.  My sons 2 daughters, 1 a senior in high school and her sister a freshman both played on the schools' varsity soccer team.  They both received high praise and made us proud.  May the good Lord make the holidays and the coming year healthy and happy for you and your family . Your classmate, Richard and Carolyn Barba – December 2005

Richard Barba writes : Things have been going well this year.  Last year was filled with many health problems especially for Carolyn.  Thanks to many doctors she is back to normal.  Since I gave up boating I've been chasing a little white ball and trying to hit it which invariably ruins a nice walk in the park.  Hope to be there for our 55th. – October 2005

BarbaFrom 50th Reunion Book, 2002 - USAF July 1954 - July 1956. Married Marjorie Baker 1956 (deceased 1964).  Children Frank, born 1957, and Ellen, born 1959.  Married Carolyn Morison 1966; stepson Wayne 1959.

I worked 40 years, except for 2 years in the USAF, for the same company until I retired in 1992.  The company, Sperry Gyroscope evolved into several different companies and wound up as Unisys.  When I retired, I was an Engineering Section Head in a systems management group for the Nexrad Doppler Radar weather detection system.  My work over the 40 years was varied from aircraft autopilots, development of digital Loran C, submarine sonar arrays to automatic warehouse systems.  My Lehigh engineering training was of great help and pride.

My wife, Carolyn, and I live on Long Island where we enjoy boating on LI sound.  For the last few years, I'm enjoying playing golf, weather permitting.  We also enjoy the time we have with our children and 5 grandchildren.

December 8th, 2000 - The years have gone by so quickly but the Lehigh web site will allow us to renew old friends.

December 2004:  Retired from GE in 1985, then consulted for 3 years, specializing in engineering management.  Finally could not stand another night in hotel rooms and fully retired in 1988.  We lived in Lake County of CA for 15 years, where I played a major role in community activities.  I really liked it there; we had acreage, lots of oak trees, deer and raccoons.  Unfortunately, the roads tended to be narrow and winding, and medical services limited.  We moved to a Del Webb community in Lincoln, CA in 1999.  Although there are over 11,000 residents here, I have not been able to locate a single other Lehigh Graduate.

Fall / Winter 2022 Alumni Bulletin:  Edgar A. Bergmiller '52, Southbury, Conn., Aug.12, 2021.  A Lambda Chi Alpha brother, Mr. Bergmiller was a business executive overseeing transportation and logistics for a number of Fortune 1000 companies and ended his career as a financial planner for IDS/American Express.

From Fall / Winter 2016 Alumni Bulletin Pat Moran (deceased) writes:  Ed Bergmiller, who lost his wife three years ago after rejoicing in her for 68 years called and comforted me

November 2011:  Nothing new here. Just remember that no news is good news, especially at our age!!!   Well , let's see. I do remember some things.  Fake right knee, spinal stenosis and now orthopedic guy tells me my left shoulder is shot!!  You might say I'm laughing on the outside but crying on the inside - Falling apart at the joints!!.   Ed B

August 2010:  Hello Classmates, wish I had some good news for you, but life is pretty routine these days.  Nothing exciting to report, except I was delighted to see my name was not on that list of those from '52, who recently passed away.  Am pretty much recovered from right knee surgery last summer, but still not perfect.  Healing takes a while once you are in your 80's!!!!!  If anything outstanding happens to me in the near future, you'll be the first to know.  Eddie B

January 2008 - Yo, "Pay" Moran (deceased), when did you change your name?  I almost deleted your message, as I'm not interested in paying anyone anything.

I tried to reply to you on your last request for info, but my message came back as undeliverable.  Hard to figure. (Editors note: not to difficult as I had Pat PayMoran's address wrong - [now deceased])

Not much news here, except I just passed the big "80" birthday.  Suddenly I feel a lot older.  Ed B

November 2005 - So Bill, did you really have a turkey vein inserted in your "hallowed" Lehigh body??  Geez, do you feel more "chicken" since that procedure???   Thank God, my wife was able to draw veins and arteries from her leg, a few (6) years ago, when she underwent triple bypass surgery.  (Ed has reference to my heart surgery)

October 2005 - .No new news about me. Still "hanging out" in Cocoa Beach, FL, dodging hurricanes if any come our way.  They pretty much missed us this year, and Wilma was supposed to just be a tropical storm up our way.  Big mistake, as we had hurricane winds between 70 and 90 mph.  No serious damage to our condo, just lost a few roof soffitts, shingles, signs, etc.  Also power only out for 6 hours and weather was turning colder, so no A/C was not a problem.  Went from 85o and humid to 49o, cold and dry in 24 hours.  Ed

From Winter 2009 Alumni Bulletin:  I recently had a lengthy phone conversation with Richard "Dick" Brown, of Carlsbad, Calif.  After Lehigh and Army service, Dick entered the selling game with Coro, manufacturers of fashion / costume jewelry; he covered territory from Canada to Mexico, and from Kansas to California.  Dick bought into another jewelry firm and later owned the company.  In 1986, Dick retired and purchased a thoroughbred trail horse, but found that weekend riding was not stimulating enough, so a second and then a third were acquired.  In November 1988, Guenter Seidel, a renowned rider/trainer, came into the picture.  From that time on, Dick says the United States Equestrian Team became his life.  He and his steeds represented the USA in three Olympics‑ 1996, 2000, and 2004‑where all won bronze medals.  Dick also took part in three World Equestrian Games and four World Cups.

The Browns say that "the past 20 years have enriched our lives‑the agony and the ecstasy of the competition, the adventure, the travel, the wonderful friends we have met, and the daily reward of the love of our horses is beyond our dreams."

Thanks, Dick and Jane, for your wonderful story!

Bob's Biography

I entered Lehigh in 1948 after a short military service.  I graduated in 1952 with a Bachelor of Science degree in Chemical Engineering . After a short period of employment with Merck &Co., I joined the Association of American Railroads at their Research Center in Chicago.  I obtained a Master of Science in Engineering from Northwestern University in 1959.  I held various positions in research and management at the AAR until I joined Southern Pacific Co. in San Francisco in 1972 as manager of research.  Southern Pacific was a leader in railroad technology for many years and engaged Japan, Germany and other countries in developing locomotive, freight car and track equipment.  I later held the positions of Chief Mechanical Officer and Vice President of Maintenance.  Like many industries in the United States, the railroads entered mergers and  operating agreements to remain economically viable entities in the transportation service of the country.  Thus, in 1984, Southern Pacific and Santa Fe railroads proposed to merge.  I was selected to become Vice President, Purchasing joining with twelve others officers to plan and carry-out the proposed merger.  Unfortunately, The Interstate Commerce Commission denied our merger application in late 1985.  I later retired from SP; first joining a local construction company as CEO and President, then becoming a Real Estate Broker until final retirement in 1998.  I could never have accomplished this wonderful career without the magnificent education at Lehigh and the models of business success demonstrated by so many of my Lehigh forerunners.

Life has been more than a business career.  My wife, Linda and I have three adopted children and six grandchildren; all living in California.  Early in my life in Illinois I became involved with Christian missions that has been a passion since. Linda, who has a Master's degree in Theology from Fuller Seminary in Pasadena, and I have travelled extensively in behalf of mission work.  I became head of a work-project team while attending The Menlo Park Presbyterian Church.  Our team conducted work parties in France, Argentina, Holland, Sweden, and Mexico and in Hawaii and other U.S. locations.  I headed a fledgling Habitat for Humanity group in the poverty area of East Palo Alto.  Later, I joined the St. Vincent dePaul Society bringing hope to homeless and needy people throughout the world.  Linda served for fourteen years in the Chaplaincy program at Stanford University Hospital.  These have been rich experiences.  Linda continues to teach Scripture and works with the needy in the community.

Our lives have other dimensions as well.  We are musically inclined.  We developed a love for opera while living in the Bay Area.  Linda likes Italian opera and has done some teaching of opera to the frail and elderly.  I am a Wagnerian.  We have enjoyed abundant travel especially taking our children and now grandchildren on fun-filled vacations.  As one might expect, my business was filled with travel, as well.  In my retirement, I took up a project in genealogy.  The outcome has been meeting and communicating with relatives in various parts of the United States and Ireland.  In 2006, Linda and I travelled to Ireland with the specific mission of finding ancestral sites and perhaps meeting living relations.  We had success with both.  Knowing more of our heritage has been important to us, but also, it is something that we hand-down to our children and their kids.  The 1940 United States Census records are about to be released.  My summer should be very busy.
