From 2018 Summer Alumni Bulletin: An email from
Ed Leidheiser's widow, Mary Lou, reports she enjoys
the column and stays in touch with
Ralph
Fortney. Mary Lou attended her 65th Reunion at Hood
College, Frederick, Md., and wonders if Lehigh 65th Reunion
returnee David De Graaf
ever lived in Hendersonville, N.C., and attended Grace Lutheran Church
there? David? Is that you? You are welcome to
answer Mary Lou
in this column.
Responding to Mary Lou Leidheiser: Yes, I am the
David De Graaf that you recall, still in Hendersonville,
NC. Surprised at seeing your inquiry and my name in the
recent Lehigh magazine, I tried and failed to look you up.
Apparently you moved away from Flat Rock, NC to Glenview,
IL, perhaps in 2002. None of the phone numbers I found
worked. Send me email if you see this - Webmaster's Note I
don't put email addresses in the web other than my own -
Spammers mine web sites for addresses. Mary Lou
contact me and I'll forward Dave's address.
From Fall / Winter 2017 Alumni Bulletin:
As
Ralph
Fortney
said during the festivities: "We may not have had
quantity, but we sure had quality!" David De Graaf joined 12
other '52 Classmates at our 65th Reunion - See
Fall / Winter
Alumni Bulletin for more details.
I married Marguerite Thyberg, from my '48 high school class in Ridgewood, NJ, had one son who has turned out to be an engineer, too.
Bell Labs was my employer from '54 thru '89, except for 4 years at Bellcomm, Inc. At the start, I designed some transistor circuits for the Titan radio guidance system, but this soon transformed into a lifelong dance with astrodynamics, programming and computer technology. I helped to design the guidance program for the Titan ICBM, and a complex simulation program for the Apollo lunar flights that was used to plan the missions and scope out what was possible.
At Bellcomm I helped to plan the Skylab missions. But then I watched in dismay as the US, in its wisdom, killed the golden goose and terminated the space program. Teams of brilliant engineers and scientists were disbanded and released to do "more productive" work. What a tragedy! I had the rare privilege to participate in the greatest intellectual exploration in history.
I became involved with the UNIX operating system and, since retirement, have become an enthusiast of Linux and the open source movement, running my consulting business for amusement and stimulation.
Thanks, Lehigh, for helping me to learn how to learn.

From
Bill Erdman,
WebMaster: As Jad and I went to high school and Lehigh together
I was fortunate to to be able to interact with him longer than just 4 years.
Jad was just as outgoing and pleasant at Mt Lebanon High School.
Over the year I was able to talk with him occasionally and see him at the
various Reunions. In High School he was nicknamed, "Twinkle Toes", for
his running style. Guys laughed at his small steps but no one could
catch him!
It was my pleasure to talk with
Kathleen
a week after his death and to meet his son, James. That was a
very moving experience - Looking at James W was like jumping back 60
years and looking at Jad again! The resemblance was
breathtaking.
Jad, I miss you.
