David
Garden
St Helena, CA
January 17, 2023
From Summer, 2023, Alumni Bulletin:
David A. Garden '52, Saint Helena, CA, Jan. 17,
2023. Mr. Garden was a Sigma Phi brother and a member of The
Brown and White and soccer team. He worked in the steel industry
for many years before returning to his family property, where he became
a cattle rancher. His grandchild, Amy Mastromonaco, is a
member of the Class of 2009.
Heard from Peter Vandekamp,
class of '62 that David passed away January 17, 2023. He wanted to
hang on till his 70th wedding anniversary. His wife, Nancy, is
proud of ALL his accomplishments. - Mach 2023
There are fewer of us now and
those that are left are tapering off and have less energy than we used
to. I’m still married to my Bethlehem girl and our 5 kids are all
living on our ranch, helping out with all the stuff I can’t do as well
as I used to. It is great to sit back and admire the next generations.
I never made it to CEO status but feel that Nancy and I
contributed greatly to our community and raised a fine crop of kids,
grandkids and a great, great granddaughter. - May, 2019
From Spring 2018 Alumni
Bulletin: Dave writes that slowing down (at 87) is not a great thing, but better than the
alternative. He and Nancy have been married 65 years, have five children, five
grandchildren and one 4 year-old great-grandson. The subtle but unspoken
message was that love, hard work and a little luck can make for a wonderful
life. Thanks, Dave,
for your inspiration.
From Fall 2015 Alumni
Bulletin - In my 25+ years as your class correspondent I have
received many memorable life resumes, but none more inspiring than the
one I received from Dave Garden in March 2015. "Dave Garden
here, retired and tired. I returned to St. Helena, CA, forty years
after my parents passed on. St. Helena was a sleepy town with five
wineries; today 467. One achievement I consider worthwhile was my
capacity to help create an 80-unit affordable housing complex in our
little town 25 years ago. It is a rental managed by a nonprofit group
and continues to provide affordable housing for low-income families.
Another endeavor as a conservationist was to put 600 acres of our ranch
into the Capital Land Trust of Napa County. My Bethlehem bride of 62
years is the founder and artistic director of The White Barn, an 1870
carriage house on our ranch that has produced musicals, lieder, ethnic
music, poetry and prose readings, etcetera. The whole family has
contributed to its success and in 30 years of performances has given
$450,000 to local charities. Life is good; we are upright. Our five
children live on or near the ranch: five grandchildren (one graduated
from Lehigh) lead productive lives and last October our first
great-grandchild arrived. We are still active in conservation projects
and cultural activities. Thanks,
Pat,
for your continued reporting.” Thanks, Dave, for a wonderful
update.
From Fall 2006 Alumni Bulletin:
From St. Helena, Calif., I
received a newsletter from
David Alexander Garden.
David, who came to Lehigh from St. Helena, says he's still married
"to the same girl, Nancy Huff," he found in Bethlehem in 1950.
They live quietly on a thousand acre ranch. The Gardens have a granddaughter, Amy '09, at Lehigh on a soccer
scholarship. Amy is excelling in her studies and loves Lehigh.

George
Gigon
July 14, 2023
I
received two emails and several images from Gwynne Gigon concerning her Father. Rather
than trying to merge the two I present them both:
I regret to
inform you that my father, George R Gigon,
passed away July 14, 2023.
By coincidence, Lehigh Men's Soccer is hoisting a banner on the field
at the 10/7/23 Lehigh vs Army game honoring the 1951 MAC championship
team my father and his brother, Dick,
played on, and have invited our
family to attend. Joining us will be my uncle Gerry 67 who also played
soccer for Lehigh. We so enjoyed attending the 50th and 40th Lehigh
reunions. My dad loved Lehigh and it prepared him for a successful 44
year career in engineering and business. He was a wonderful man.
Sadly my
father George R. Gigon '52 passed away recently at the age of 93, after
a long illness. My brother Gerry, uncle Gerry '67,
and I plan to visit Lehigh October 7th for the men's soccer game against
Army, including a banner hoisting ceremony honoring the '51 MAC
championship team at halftime. George and his brother Dick
played on the winning team; Dick was captain and a two time All
American, later inducted into the Lehigh Athletics Hall of Fame. My
father enjoyed a fulfilling life after Lehigh, both professionally and
personally. We have fond memories of attending his 40th and 50th
reunions, and visiting the beautiful campus on a couple of other
occasions. George was a wonderful man and we miss him very much.
Sincerely,
Gwynne Gigon
