Hi
Bill, thanks
for all you have done for our class! Because of you, it has been great to be
able to keep up with everyone. I just read your update.. Sounds like you are
doing well. Amazing - so am I. Hope we will have a 75th next year*.
Because we married late, we are blessed
to have young grandchildren - 2 that are 15 , twins - 8 , and one 3 year-old.
Please give me a call. Thanks, Bud Keen - August 2022.
Thanks Bud, you gave me an idea - I'm going to propose a Zoom meeting
sometime in the near future and see if we can get a couple of us together
without travelling. See note on
home page.
Note from Bud
to
Ray
(deceased)
and Nancy
Mangold,
April, 2020: I think you will enjoy looking into info on this site.
Bill Erdman
is the
person who created the website and maintains it. Sad news is that
Bob Woeber
past away last year (2018).
Bob
was the main person who helped put together reunions etc.
Bill does not
think there will be a 75th in 2023 unless someone steps up to do it.
You’ll see that you had updated your info in the past. I’m sure
Bill
would enjoy hearing from you. Best regards, Betsy and Bud -
Note: Ray
and I
first met at Camp Kon-O-Kwee in 1941. He and I took sax
and clarinet lessons from the same teacher in Pgh.
Bud, I went to Kon-O-kwee as a
counselor in 1948!
Bud, Virginia Beach, VA ponders
life: Hard to believe I'm still here with the big B'day this summer. Any
possibility of another reunion? - No.75? - April 2020. Answer from
Bill: You aren't alone, Buddy, everyone reading this
are considered "Elderly". Yes, we will have a reunion if you will organize
it.
Hi
Bill,
I talked to
Ray
(deceased) and Nancy
Mangold today. He asked me to send the website to him.
They have been in the Philadelphia area for sometime. Hope he will
update his info to you.
Betsy and I are still in
amazingly good health. We would love to visit with anyone from our class if
they are passing thru our area. Glad you have decided to maintain the website.
Best regards, Bud Keen,
January 2018

about
Bob Woeber (deceased): Sorry to send this sad news. Hope that someone
will organize a 70th reunion. Since Bob and I
went to Julia Ward Howe elementary school, I have known him a long
time. Our family moved to MtL in 1939. Got me into looking at old
elementary school class pictures and some Junior High home room
pictures. Sure does bring back a lot of memories. I assume that
Bill Erdman
will be maintaining the ’48 class website. Best regards to you and
Nancy. Bud Keen - January 2018
My answer to Bud’s questions:
As far as the web
site is concerned, I started it in 1996, 21 years ago, and don't plan to stop
until I have to.
Bob
fed me lots of
stuff for the site so it was a good match -
Bob
collected, I
posted. I have addressed the future of the site and posted my plans for the web
site on the linked page
Future. Bob's
loss was a wakeup call for me to plan for the future demise of the site. As
WebMaster it's my job to take care of it. Thanks for asking.

Most exciting news for us is that
Betsy and I celebrated our 50th anniversary December 2017. Both
still in amazing good health. Hope to attend our 70th MtL reunion
in 2018 assuming there will be one. Sadly we attended my brother
Bill's memorial service in MtL in October. Age 83. Toured
MtL with our daughters. - Received December 30, 2017 (Probably last
update of 2017 - how time flies when you are getting older)
Jerry Goddard’s wife, Peg, called us yesterday to
inform us that
Jerry had passed away. We visited them several years
ago at their home near Boston. At that time, he had early stage
dementia that probably progressed to Alzheimer’s. Sorry to have sad
news about
Jerry who was a friend since 7th grade. This year was
their 64th anniversary.
Hope to
see everyone at our 70th MtL Reunion. This Dec. will be our 50th.
Bud - October 2017
Bud, Virginia
Beach, VA, writes: I just looked at the website, and enjoyed
reading the updated info. We are both still in amazingly good
condition and plan to attend the 70th reunion. Our exciting news is
that our oldest daughter, Liz, lives 10 minutes from us. She
had twins 2 1/2 years ago - a boy and a girl. We see them a lot.
Their oldest daughter is 9. Best regards to all, Bud Keen –

good friends from that class.
Our big news is
that our first grandchild, a boy, was born Apr. 7 to our west coast

Unknown date |
Just a note to say that Elaine and I are still alive and kicking here
in California, although we don't kick quite as high as we used to. Can't
believe we've been here for 44 years. Both are in good health and able to
get in some golf and tennis. One of our granddaughters got married in Santa
Barbara last month and another is in the hospital as I type this, expecting
our 2nd great granddaughter. So, life goes on! Hope you both are well, and
I thank and congratulate you on the wonderful job you have done over the
years in keeping all of us in the class of '48 aware and up to date on the
happenings of our friends. Have a great Thanksgiving, a beautiful Christmas
and a Happy and wonderful 2024! Paul – November 2023
Hi
Bill,
just want you to know that I'm still with you and I'm happy to hear that
there are still over 100 of us that are still hanging in there. Elaine
and I are still able to play some golf and tennis and get in some
walking to stay loose. Our travelling has been somewhat limited, but with
great grandchildren finally starting to appear, we're happy to stay around
here. My major complaint today is that I'm unable to get into the website
for our class. When I tried, I got a message "HTTP Error 403.14
Forbidden" and then a possible cause, plus things I might try to get in.
Can't seem to make it work. My daughter seems to think that others would
be having the same problem. Do you know if others are experiencing this?
And, what can I do to get the website back on my computer? Our best to you
and Kay! Paul.
Bill’s
note: The best thing you can do is send me an email immediately and I’ll
fix it. If no one lets me know, it may be down for weeks as I don’t look
at the online web very often unless I hear from guys like you. – July 2023.
Paul is still active - he replied to my general email by saying, “Still
alive, well and enjoying life in California. Elaine and I have
fortunately stayed relatively healthy, getting in some golf and tennis, and
with the COVID situation subsiding, are travelling occasionally. Heading
for St Petersburg for a wedding in October and to visit my sister in
Tequesta. My last contact with a classmate was with
Claire Hatch,
but learned earlier this year that she passed away last December. Birthday
tomorrow, so daughters taking me to see the Pittsburgh Pirates play the S F
Giants. Best to all and stay well!” - August 2022.
Paul wants
everyone to know he is alive and well in California. From his
Christmas card: God has blessed
us in so many, many ways over the years and 2010 has been no exception. In January, our
wedding anniversary number hit 50 (hoorah!) and in August, Paul's +Years on this earth reached 80 (gasp!). To
celebrate the two milestones, our daughters threw us a wonderful party for
our family and friends in July. It was beautiful, and we loved it.
The picture was taken at the party,
and for those of you we haven't seen for a while, Cheryl, Ken and their three
children are on the left; Donna, Bob and their three are on the right, and
Karen, Brad and their two are in the middle, directly behind the elderly couple
that were told to sit in the front.
For the most part, we've been in good health. We
both keep busy with family, church, volunteer, bridge, reading and exercise
activities. And, Elaine still likes her golf and Paul his tennis. Our travels
included cruising Hawaii in January, visiting Karen and family in Denver twice,
Elaine went to San Antonio with High School friends in September, we spent
several days with Cheryl and Ken in Newport Beach in October and had a short
trip to Chicago for a funeral in November.
We hope you all have a grand and glorious Christmas
and wish you the very best for 2011. Peace and Love
to all, Paul & Elaine -

November 2015 - Talked to Susie this afternoon.
Ben is still doing well but he has the same problem I
do - He can't hear so good. She said they are both
doing great considering his age. All the kids and 7
grandchildren are "wonderful."
September
2008: Kay and I visited Susie and
Ben on September 2nd at their home. Ben
was doing well. His home is the beautiful
ex-administration office for the Health Care facility Ben
and Susie ran for many years. Then the state
required more modern updates than Ben could provide
so he closed it down and turned it into a lovely
subdivision.
Their
5 kids all sound phenomenal and are spread as far away as
Rio de Janeiro. -

June 2008:
Bob spoke with Ben. He
and Susie have been at the same address for over 40
years. He sounds rather different, but remembered me
right away. He said that he is housebound. I
asked him if there was any possibility that he could come
and he said that he couldn't walk.

Dear
Bob, Thanks so much
for letting me know about the
60th Reunion. We can’t possibly be
that old! I do not know yet whether I will be able to attend.
To bring you up to date, my
husband died suddenly twelve years ago while sitting in next
to me in a movie theater. In late January 2008 I
decided it was time to move to a smaller place so I put my
home of 38 years on the market . Much to my amazement
it sold quickly and I bought a condo one and a half miles
from my daughter.
I have been blessed with good
health and keep active walking, sports, traveling, etc.
I have seven grandchildren (6 boys, 1 girl) ranging in age
from 23 to 4 and they are the love of my life.
It has been great to read about
the members of our class on the website.

Catching up with … Marty Hills
Marty Hills
loves Hudson.
That fact is evident the minute a visitor walks
into the Hudson Commons Drive condo she shares with her husband Bob.
Paintings and mementos of the town fill the walls.
"We just moved in a month ago," she says.
While the condo is new to them, the Hills actually
have called Hudson home for 44 years, the same amount of time they have been
married.
It's a second marriage for both; Marty had
been living in Silver Lake with her two sons and daughter, and Bob
was living in Akron with his three sons when they met.
"I was in a theater production in Silver Lake,"
she says . "A friend brought him to the cast party and we met there."
Marty says that after they married, they wanted to find a community
where they could raise their family.
"We just love it," Marty
says of Hudson.
The Hills embraced the town.
Marty served on the Hudson School Board and was able to give her
daughter her diploma at graduation.
She also represented Ward I on City Council for
three years and in 2005 she was chosen as the Chamber of Commerce's Citizen
of the Year.
Marty admits the city has changed over the years.
"When we walked down Main Street, we used to know
everyone," she says. "I don't know everyone now. There were 5,000 residents
when we moved here. Today there are 23,500."
One of Marty’s favorite projects is her
work with the Random Acts of Kindness Foundation.
She said she read about the foundation in 1995 in
a newspaper or magazine article.
"My parents always taught me that's the way to do
it," she says. "I called the foundation and said 'we have a wonderful
town."'
She has chaired the Random Acts of Kindness week
in Hudson ever since.
"I hear about random acts of kindness throughout
the year," she says. "People will call and say, 'I had to call and let you
know I did a random act of kindness or someone did one for me. It feels so
good."'
Hills herself was the recipient of a random act of kindness. That act
has been included in a book, "Christian Acts of Kindness," published by the
Random Acts of Kindness Foundation.
According to the book,
Hills' brother was a P-47 pilot in World War II. He was shot down
over Germany in 1945 and it was four years before her family found him.
Her brother's grave was found in 1949.
"In an unbelievable act of kindness (in wartime no
less), someone had buried him with his ID tags," she writes in the book.
Hills' family buried him in the American Military Cemetery near Liege,
Belgium, with more than 5,000 other American servicemen.
Hills, who had visited the site several times, traveled there with her
husband for a 50th anniversary service at the cemetery.
While she was at her brother's grave, a Belgian
woman came up and thanked her for the sacrifice her family made for the
woman's country. The woman then said she belonged to a group of Belgian
citizens who come to the cemetery once a month to offer prayers and asked to
adopt Hills' brother. She said she would come monthly to pray for
him and Hills.
While Hills said she never found out the
woman's name, she will never forget her.
‑ Stephanie Fellenstein
"Not-so-Random
act of kindness" from Hudson HUB-TIMES, February 23, 2005
Former Council member
named Chamber's Citizen of the Year
by Ronnica Dull, Reporter
HUDSON - One of the
many organizations Martha "Marty"
Hills volunteers for is the Random Acts of Kindness Committee.
So it's fitting that
Hills, 74, was told on Valentine's Day - the first day in a weeklong
celebration of Random Acts of Kindness - she was chosen as the Chamber of
Commerce's 2005 Citizen of the Year winner.
"I'm overwhelmed,
honored and humbled to be receiving this award," she said. " There are so
many well-deserving citizens in the city who could have won this award."
The Chamber will
present Hills with the award March 3 at Waters Restaurant
Carolyn Konefal,
executive director of the Chamber of Commerce, said Hills received
three separate nominations - a lot for one person.
"This is a long
overdue acknowledgement of her services and dedication to the community,"
Konefal said.
Sharon Lowe-Blackford
of Cuyahoga Falls, retired supervisor of Hudson schools' buildings and
grounds department and a member of the Hudson Rotary Club, was one of three
people to nominate Hills
for the award.
"She is a brilliant
and kind .individual and a very classy lady," Lowe-Blackford said, adding
that she has always admired Hills
for her extensive involvement in activities around Hudson.
Hudsonite Paul Bodden
also nominated Hills. "She exemplifies the spirit of
volunteerism which pervades our community and is one of its notable
strengths," Bodden said. "Most notably, she has been unafraid to
engage openly in public discussion and to run for public office in contested
elections. She puts herself on the line, stands up in the open and is
heard."
Hills, a
42-year Hudson resident, said she learned to value community involvement
from her parents, Edythe and Walter McVay of Mount Lebanon,
Pa.
I have always
followed my father's advice, which is, "We were not put on this earth to
occupy space, but to leave it a better place for having been here," Hills
said. "It was his badge of honor and he wanted me to make it come
true."
Not only is Hills
involved with the Random Acts of Kindness committee, she also is a founding
member of Hudson Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution;
Hills' ancestors date back to pre-Revolutionary War.
She is a member of
the Akron Chapter of the Daughters of the American Colonist and a member of
the National Huguenots Society.
A member of the First
Congregational Church since 1963,
Hills has been singing in its choir since 1968. She also was the
church moderator for one term and as a minister in the Stephen Ministry
program, which provides a listening ear to parishioners during difficult
times.
She has been a member
of the David Hudson Chapter of Questers since 1974.
Since 1987, she also
has been a member of the national Sisterhood P.E.O., which promotes

Joe, you sent me
an email complaining that I hadn't replied to your cryptic
note. I did reply but probably didn't remember
to send it or filed it. Trying to remember what you
said and what I said I realized that dementia is a sneaky
menace. My wife Kay is suffering with event-related
dementia and I am her caregiver.
What happens when the caregiver starts getting loopy?
Easy answer: He remembers an old song and starts
singing; Boom, boom, ain't it great to be crazy?
One stanza is:
Boom, boom, ain't it great to be crazy.
Giddy and foolish the whole day through
Boom, boom, ain't it great to be crazy.
Way down South where the bananas grow
a flea stepped on an elephant's toe.
the elephant cried, with tears in his eyes,
"Why don't you pick on someone your own size?"
I think, in my case, that 93
½ is the knee in my dementia curve.
It is all downhill from now on! Bill <>< - March 2024
He
did it, Joe did it except the few days turned into 3
months!
Hi
Bill,
I have developed a working investment program that is
performing at a solid, steady, greater than 25% annual
return. I hope to have a fund established and available for
family and friends within a year. Stay tuned. We that are
still living are in our last decade so I had better keep my
butt moving on this one. With my kids in charge, the fund
will live on for family and friends.
I've been married
for 63 happy years to wife Pat. Health is good, no complaints. Class of
'48 has been really lucky and blessed by your website. Good job & many thanks.
Cheers & peace, Joe Miller, The Magnificent. October 2023.
Promises, promises. Joe emailed
me and said: “A longer response will be forthcoming within
a few days. Applause to Kay for hanging-in with you
all these years. I am worried because I have received no
response to an email I recently sent to
Carol Davis. She,
Art Mensing (deceased) and I were close friends.
Cheers and peace to all." July 29, 2023

Question: Does the
website have a feature whereby any one of us can contact any other of us via
phone and or email? Answer: No, except for the phone numbers
listed with many bios (Most are probably obsolete but worth trying). I don’t
list e-mails to keep them from the public domain but will share a person’s
address with you at you request - You request, I email the person, he / she has
the option to reply to you directly. I do this so web crawlers don’t mine the
web site for live emails.

February 2008: Still working on
financial ventures. I am about to set up an "incubator" account with an
organization which will monitor it and present it to the world if
results are good. My track record is good so far, but they
need to have tight control on what I am doing. For instance
one trick is to establish several accounts, using a different strategy
in each, and then presenting the best performer as a track record. It
is as much a hobby as a serious effort.
I am really going to try to make it to the
August '08 reunion, even though I never really knew any of the 30 or so
"definites". I do remember all of them well though. I
probably won't, of course, but I may just show up at the reunion - I
really want to. - Joe
September 2005 - Hi
Bill, In reply to your
"recent" (December, 2004) email in which you asked "how goes the battle"
- As the smoke clears I'm still standing and in good health. Life
don't get much better than that.
My investment program is a lot of fun and keeps me very busy. So
far it has performed well. The fund is currently 'for family and
friends' and is limited by law to the 15 current accounts. I
plan to establish a public hedge fund within a year or two. I am
teaching the kids how to operate it in case I buy the farm first and
they want to continue with it. I am trading only in the Eurodollar /
U.S. dollar currency pair - because of it's super high volume and
therefore good trade executions. Sounds risky but it can be done
conservatively by using very little of the available leverage - meaning
only a small percentage of the capital is invested.

May 2003: We expect to be in Spain in August. If so I will
not be at the reunion.
I decided to apply the strategy which was to be used in my proposed website
to the development of an investment fund. Tested the results using
historical data and am now engaged in a real investment test. The
profits so far have been encouraging - especially coupled with consistency
of performance (ie) relatively small drawdowns. Will continue the
testing for the rest of the year while my daughters establish the fund with
the SEC and market it.
I will stay in touch to let you know how the fund is doing. -

August 2001: Nothing exciting to report since last year - but
that’s probably good new. More good news is that there is no bad news
in our lives. A slow paced life style with visits back and forth with
kids, other relatives and friends - and an occasional short vacation.
In May I collided with my 70th birthday so finally went on Social Security.
God bless the New Deal.
Just finished a three month contract programming job at the IRS. They
are still in the Dark Ages with IBM mainframes. That may be my last
job.

& I continue to exercise regularly. I jog three or four miles every
other day. It works wonders I think. I always wonder, though, if
it would be healthier to do no exercise. Wouldn’t it be ironic if I
got hit by a car trying to stay healthy while my couch-potato friends are
safely opening another beer?
We are still working on our mom & pop website. I am also researching
some stock option investment schemes which will mesh with our ‘option
fair-price’ website. I enjoy the computer work plus it is compatible
with the ‘risk-taker’ personality trait which I have occasionally been
accused of having.
Love the memories of you all.

(deceased)
John McCune (deceased), with
his sister and
Donna Kae Simmonds in his car, saw me walking on Washington Road.
He doubled back and drove me home while we talked.
I met
Beverly Beck (deceased)at Pitt and we dated a few times. Was great to
see her. We had gone together to afternoon and evening dances in the
7th and 8th grades.
Met my 8th grade science teacher,
Mr. Raines, on a Dormont sidewalk.
Talked with
Martha Allison on a Mt. Lebanon bus. Saw several MtL people at
Tech but names escape me.
Bob Hogan (deceased) and I
visited
Art Mensing (deceased) in
Hartford, Conn. Unexpectedly met
John Humphreys on a bus going to New York City. Sat and talked
with him all the way. Briefly talked with
Brad Estep (deceased) when we unexpectedly met one day.

I still perceive myself to be young, 20 or 30 maybe.
I still think of our kids as kids, and still call them ‘kid’ (eg) when they
phone I automatically say ‘Hi Kid’.
I have been blessed with really good health and a terrific family.
How did year 2000 come so quickly?
How did the kids grow up so quickly?
Why do I get tears in my eyes when I read this?

did a bait-and-gotcha on me. He offered the use of his website for
some testing I want to do but then said "but not until I get a bio."
The man has no shame.
Post 1948: Bounced around for 3 years after high school.
My brother and I worked with a combine wheat harvesting crew from Kansas to
North Dakota in 1949. Then picked fruit in California’s San Joaquin
valley. Learned to shoe horses in Seattle working for 2 years with my
uncle’s rodeo rider / horse-shoer boyhood friend from Montana. That
served me well when in school. I was able to earn $200 on weekends
when necessary. Big time money in the early 50’s. The work is
still lucrative. I considered making a career of it but thoughts of
hard labor put that to rest.
Returned to Pittsburgh in 1951 and started at Carnegie Tech the same week I
was drafted. Was sworn in but luckily a scholastic deferment kicked
in. Otherwise I might still be in Korea pushing up plants in a rice
paddy.
Decided after 3 years at Tech that I really wanted to be a Petroleum
Engineer (closely related to mining engineering). Switched to Pitt to
get that degree. Worked in the oil fields in California and west Texas
for two summers during school. When I graduated I decided that, after
all, I did not want to spend the rest of my life in some of God’s most
forsaken places. So I switched again (I am very flexible) and went to
the aerospace industry in California. There I got an MS in Mechanical
Engineering from USC by the skin of my teeth. Had the good life living
on the beach in Playa Del Rey and Malibu.
Met my wife,
Pat, in 1960 on Catalina Island while sitting beside her at a picnic
table. Stole food from her plate, she caught me, and the rest is
history. We were married 3 months later.
We came to Silver Springs, MD, in 1971 with 3 little girls and have been in
the same house almost 30 years. Worked at NASA Goddard Space Flight
Center for 8 years. Then went on an independent contracting /
consulting job supposedly for a few months but have been contracting ever
since.
Our 3 kids are now in Annapolis, Albany and Boston. Married, married
and almost married. Computer Scientist, Chemical Engineer and Nurse.
4 grandchildren.
Initiated Social Security payments in May after turning 69 so guess I am
retired. Mostly for fun Pat and I are currently developing a website.
It will present daily estimated put and call option ‘fair prices’ for 10,000
stocks.

Hi
Bill–
I’m still alive but I don't do much kicking anymore. I had a great vacation
with my family this summer. We went on an American Cruise line trip around Cape
Cod for a week. The ship was brand new and only 100 passengers so it was quite
lovely. I had never been there so enjoyed seeing all the different places. We
were at Martha's Vineyard, Newport, Hyannis, Provincetown and Plymouth to name a
few. There were 12 of us - 6 of my kids and 5 spouses and we all got along
together and did a lot of laughing!

Hi
Bill,
always good to hear from you. I didn't realize we still had so many classmates
still alive! I guess 1930 was a good year to start! I have been slowing down
some but still doing some traveling occasionally. I have a trip planned with a
good part of my family for the end of August. We are going on another cruise
with American Cruise lines that we went with to Alaska in 2019. This tine we're
cruising around Cape Cod - a week on the new cruise ship American Eagle.
Before that, this fall, I will attend a couple of showers - one baby shower to
celebrate my 11th great grandchild - a boy due in October, and a wedding shower
in September to celebrate my grandson's wedding next February. I spend a lot of
time sitting on my porch with a book listening to a waterfall in my garden - so
peaceful. Health is good! Bob's been gone almost 8 years now and I
still miss him! Mary – July, 2023
Mary is still active- she replied to my general email by saying, “HI

Mary, always faithful writes: Hi
Bill
- just saw the reminder online for we
'48ers. Not much new here - staying home and letting kids shop for me. Haven't
seen the inside of a store in a month! Last summer in July 15 of us - me, 7
kids and spouses went to Alaska for a wonderful week on a river cruise. We had
a super time with unusually warm weather - 85 degrees in Juneau the day we were
there. We were on the American Cruise Line and it was truly a great ship.
There were only 150 of us totally and it made for a trip where everyone got to
know each other. I highly recommend them for cruising in the states. We have
another one planned for June of 2021 going to cruise along the Columbia River in
Oregon - same group.
I have been south a few times to my
condo at Lake Keowee in South Carolina and was planning on going again but had
to put it on hold because of the virus. Supposed to go to Jamaica in November
for my grandson's wedding - we'll see. I haven't seen anyone from the class for

Hi

found him on the floor near his bed and it seemed that he had hit his head on a

been pretty good - had a knee replacement in February, and am going for my last
physical therapy today but am walking fine without walker or cane, so I don't
need PT any more. I'm going to Alaska on the 2nd of July with my seven kids and
their spouses - 15 of us on a river cruise out of Juneau. We've been planning
it for a year and now counting down the days! I had to get the knee done so I
can do the walking that trip requires, and with a month to go, I'm ready!
Saw
Anne Mosites at the
funeral home last night and she looks good. Ran into
Bud Stevenson
about a month ago at a restaurant and we talked about reunions, and decided that
we're through with those - no one wants to take on the planning.
That's about all for now - hope you and Kay are good. Fondly, Mary

Bill and thanks
for the news. Unfortunately that kind of news is more than normal at our age.
Thank you for your kind words about our younger years - Once I started to date
Bob there was never anyone else for me. We had 62 wonderful years
together.
I bought a condo on Lake Keowee in South Carolina. If
you’ve never heard of Keowee google it - gorgeous lake in western SC. My one
daughter and husband live across the lake from me. My oldest son just bought a
condo like mine just around the corner so we can have bedrooms for all my gang.
My gang is 7 kids with spouses, 17 grandkids some with spouses and 6 great
grandkids. We are a fun busy group when we are all together. Not very often
now that grandkids are growing up and scattered all over the country.
I hear
from Marty McVay Hills
occasionally. She was wondering about a reunion but I told her it was doubtful
- no one to plan it. Too much work at our age. Let’s keep in touch. Mary,

and I celebrated our 60th anniversary February 3rd! We are expecting 2 babies
next August - one new grandchild (big surprise cause the parents are 40 and 39),
and one new great-grandchild! Both within 10 days of one another. We already
have 16 grandchildren and 1 great grandson, but we're ready for more - who knew
that we'd have so many when I was an only child and Bob one of three!
That's about all for now. See you all at reunion! Mary – February 2013

Had a scare with my
right knee over the weekend - was just walking on my
sidewalk and stooped over to pick up something and heard a
POP in the back of the knee and could not take another
step. Severe pain and had to hop with a walker to get back
in the house. Long story short - saw an orthopedic Dr.
today and it's not as bad as I thought. I thought I had a
torn meniscus, but he says no - just strained it. Also it
was very swollen and he drained fluid out of it then gave me
a cortisone shot and it's feeling better.
Bob and I went to his
65th last weekend and WOW - those people are really OLD!* Didn't
recognize only 1 or 2 of the women and only 2 or 3 of the men! Still we had a
good time. I think 65 reunions is enough! Mary – September 2012
*WebMaster's note: Mary
that is the funniest comment I've heard from a Classmate in ages. I needed
that. I don't consider myself old yet. I'm close but still vertical.

October e-pistol: P.S. We see
Anne Mosites Miller and
Mary Murrie Hardy occasionally. They both
look wonderful and seem to be active and happy.
We see
Skip Richardson a lot. He has some
physical issues, but is always upbeat and pretty active.
He's a wonderful guy and a great friend. 2011
Hi
Bill
- Someone on FaceBook reminded me that your birthday was
close, I can't take credit for remembering. Hope you
have a great day. My kids / grandkids and
friends surprised me on my birthday with a cruise on the 3
rivers of Pittsburgh. All my family was there (34 of
us at this count) and 6 friends and we had a wonderful 3
hour cruise on the rivers. It was a beautiful
evening, and we all had a wonderful time. The next
day the festivities continued with dinner at one grandson's
house, and then another dinner the next night at one
daughter's house. We don't all get together very
often, so it is really special when they are all together.
One family came from Florida, and another from Atlanta, and
one from Carlisle, Pa. plus the ones who are here, and they
all were in on the surprise - actually no one leaked
anything. They planned it all via emails which I was
not included in.
But enough about me - Bob has been laid up with
pneumonia this past week - spent 3 days in the hospital, but
is recovering well now. He was so glad to get home
and be in his own bed, and having me cook. Other than
that, we are pretty good health wise.
I haven't seen very many from class of 48 except
Ann Bowman McClymonds
who stopped in one day for lunch and a visit on her way to
Albion, Pa. She is amazing - drives all over the
country visiting her family & friends. Of course, we
were at
Buddy's 80th party and saw quite a few there.
I see
Anne Mosites Miller occasionally. She
looks wonderful. Bob
Woeber (deceased) and Margy seem to eat at our
favorite restaurant the same days we do, so we hear that
there might be another reunion planned for 2013.
Might as well keep them going.
Keep in touch. Mary – September

Mary
and
Bob - 2009
Hi
Bill - I did not realize
that my last news was from 2005. The time goes
fast when you're having fun. There is really not
much news to get excited about. We still spend
about 3 months in Savannah, Ga. in the winter, and then back
here in Pittsburgh the rest of the time. We
haven't been on any great trips for awhile - the last one
was in 2006 when we visited Nova Scotia and the Canadian
provinces. That was a great trip!
We went to Florida for a few days
last winter to visit son#1 who had moved from Kentucky to
Bradenton, Fl. and we had a great time there.
Seems like flying is such a pain anymore, and it's too
expensive to drive any great distance. I hope
that one of these days we'll go take a river cruise in
Europe, but that's not in the current scheduling.
Our 16th grandchild, Zach,
was born in 2005, and he's now a sturdy little 3 year old
with a 4 year old sister, who we see often because they live
only a mile away. The oldest grandchildren are
in their 20's and we will be going to our first grandchild
wedding next year when our granddaughter Katie gets married.
The balance of the grandkids are in their teens or almost
teens, and everyone has so many activities, that it's hard
to keep up with them. We try to go to baseball
games, plays, and other functions as much as we can, but we
can't do them all.
Our health - both Bob's and
mine, is pretty good, considering
Bob has diabetes, and has had 2 strokes. He
works in the yard every day, and keeps me going.
I play golf once a week - just 9 holes, and I love that
We are looking forward to the
reunion. I'm having,
Suzanne Divine Williams,
Ann Bowman McClymonds, and
Nancy Godden stay here
with us, and I'm sure we'll have wonderful gab-fest.
Hope to see you there in August.
Thanks for giving me the title of
"Sister Sleuth" - but I only tracked down 1 person, so the
title should to to
Tom (deceased) - "Brother
Sleuth". See you soon, Mary – July 2008

Letter from
Mary Murrie Hardy,
January 7th, 2007:
Dear
Bill, Just
wanted to let you know that
Sally (Fellows) O'Conner died today after suffering
a massive heart attack on New Years day. She never
was conscious, and was in a coma for 4 days. She was
always the happiest person and it was a pleasure to be
around her.
We
had a lunch on December 23rd of a few of the class of 48, and I sat next to
her, and we had such a nice time chatting. There were about 12 or so
at the lunch, Bob Ott
(deceased),
Ray Ferraro (deceased),
Buddy Stevenson with
Eileen,
Bob Woeber (deceased) with
Margy,
Bros and Peggy
Richardson,
Anne Mosites Miller, Chuck Hibler, and
Sally and Buck along
with Bob and myself. I don't have details of the funeral yet.
Maybe you'll hear from some others, but thought I'd send along the word.
Mary
December 2005 - Hi
Bill - Loved your card - such a clever way
to show off your beautiful family. The Hardy's are fine with just a
few of the old age problems. We are going to go to lunch on the 23rd
of December with a few of the class members. Buddy
and Eileen
Stevenson, Peggy and
Skip Richardson,
Sally Fellows

and
Bucky,
Bob Ott

Ought to be fun!
Sad news just received a couple days ago. Ann
Bowman McClymonds husband, Bob, died suddenly on November 18.
He was a wonderful guy - everyone liked him so much. I saw
Ann in October in Chicago when our gang of
girls had our annual reunion at
Pritch's house. He was in good health then, but had to have a
bypass so they decided to do it before Thanksgiving, because they knew it
was a thing they had to do sooner or later. Apparently, he came
through it fine, and went home, only to have complications with very low
blood pressure. He was back in the hospital having that taken care of
when he collapsed and died. Ann
and Bob lived (she is there) in Seven Lakes, North Carolina. -
a golfing community near Pinehurst.
We are going to be with all our family next
weekend, but not everyone for Christmas. We are 32 now with 7 kids, 7
outlaw kids, and 16 grandchildren - 10 boys and 6 girls. The
grandchildren ages range from 23 years to 10 months, so you can imagine how
loud it gets when we are all together.
Keep in touch - I love looking through the class
news and you do a great job! Thanks, Mary
October 2005: The first week of September
the annual "DBC" reunion was held at my home in Lake Barrington, IL, a
suburb of Chicago. It was five days of talking and eating. We spent two
days in Chicago seeing the sights including the new Millennium Park (which
is great fun and like no other park), the Architectural Boat Tour on the
Chicago River (a must do) and a night on the town. We told everyone that
would listen who we were and that we had graduated from Mt. Lebanon High
School in 1948. We hope "they" were impressed!
The above picture was taken after a long day of touring and shopping so
we're a little worse for the wear. Not bad, considering! Seated: (L

August 2003: Hey,
Bill - Sorry we won't see you at the reunion - hope you're doing well now.
Since I keep getting email from the you to bring
things up to date before next Friday, I thought I'd better get this sent, or
the email Nazi will surely be on my back.
We don't have much to report - a new grandchild on the way (due in November)
and that will make 15. This one is a girl, and that will help to even
the count although the boys still lead - 9 boys and soon 6 girls.
Our oldest grandson is a senior at W. & J. college in Washington, Pa. and
plays on the football team. The next one will be a junior at Penn
State. Then we have one girl who will be a senior in high school this
year. The rest of them are still little - the oldest of the
young group is 11. Our granddaughter in high school (Katie) is
quite a good golfer and plays on some of the eastern U. S. junior tours.
She is hoping for a golf scholarship for college. We try to follow her
on some of her tours - it is more fun than trying to play ourselves.
Bob
had a stroke last summer, but is doing well now and we are spending a lot of
time trying to keep up with the weeds in the garden. Unfortunately,
the weeds seem to be winning. It will be great to see all those who
are coming to the reunion.
Hi to all those who don't make it.

June, 2001: Sorry you had to call
Bob Woeber (deceased)
about my email address - I changed in May to aol.
He called me to remind me of the '48 web site. I love looking at all
the notes from everyone.
Bob
and I spent the winter in Savannah (Skidaway Island) and came back to
Pittsburgh in April. All our children are now married - with our
youngest son tying the knot on Dec. 30, 2000. Our family now numbers
30 with the addition of our new daughter-in-law Heather. Our second grandson just graduated from high school
and is headed to Penn State next week - He starts in the summer session.
We are both well, and hope that you are also - Hi everyone!! Mary

Mary's Biography
My activities since high school consist of a long list of things that
Mothers do when they raise a large family.
I graduated from Hood College and worked for U. S. Steel for a few years and
then we started our family in 1955.
Between 1955 and 1973 we had 7 children - 4 girls and 3 boys. Not too bad
for an only child.
Bob
worked in the lumber business ( 84 LUMBER) and had fun driving harness
horses at the county fairs. We lived in Scott Twp. for the first few years,
but since 1964 we have lived in Upper St. Clair.
We are golfers, and I have sung in the church choir for 20 years, and that
gives me a lot of pleasure.
We work in our garden a lot, and enjoy doing that.
The children have given us 13 grandchildren and another one on the way!
All my boys live out of state - one in Columbus, Ohio and one in Lexington,
Ky. and the
youngest ( the only one not married) lives in San Diego.
The girls all live either in Upper St. Clair, or Mt. Lebanon, so we are very
lucky to be able to see 9 of the grandchildren a lot.
Bob
and I have taken some wonderful trips - a few cruises and I really love to
go on cruises!
Other than that, my life as an Upper St. Clair housewife isn't too exiting -
but it suits me just fine!
And that's what I've done for the past 50 years. |
