Bob is still
active - he replied to my general email by saying, “Bill,
still hanging in there as is my wife Connie. We’re in
a CCRC in Chapel Hill, NC. They take very good care of us.
Still active with the NC Symphony— on its Board. No more
golf, but do work out twice a week. Hope you are doing
well.” - August 2022
Bob
writes: Hi
Bill. The changed E-mail address
indicates that we recently moved to a CCRC in Chapel HIll,
The Cedars of Chapel Hill. We've downsized to a two bedroom
plus den apartment. Still have not sold our house; we're
looking for that one interested buyer. The Cedars is
working out well with very nice neighbors, and excellent,
friendly staff and too much good food.
The CEO search project for
the NC Symphony worked out very well. We managed to attract a very strong
candidate from the Cleveland Orchestra, Sandi Macdonald. She's the first female
CEO the NCS has had and is already making her mark.
We enjoyed our 12 day trip to
Sicily. If anyone wants to consider a small group tour in Italy, we'd recommend
Amber Road Tours. Never more than 18 in the group with a top-notch guide.
We'll be going to San
Francisco for Christmas to be with our son, Tom, and his family. Nine
year old granddaughter will be dancing in the San Francisco Ballet's version of
the Nutcracker, so attendance by grandparents is almost obligatory. All the
best to all for the holidays and in 2012. Perhaps we'll see you in 2013. –

April 2011:
Nice looking new web site! It's been a while since I
updated my info, so here goes. Although Connie and I
have had some medical issues over the past few years, we are
now feeling well and looking forward to more good years
ahead. I am still playing golf and walking 18 holes most of
the time. Unfortunately the golf ball manufacturers have
suffered in their technology and the balls don't go as far
as they once did.
Both of us have continued to be
active volunteers in the NC Triangle area. Through the Executive Service
Corps I do consulting with non-profit agencies. For the past three years
I've become quite active with the NC Symphony, whose office is in Raleigh.
I'm head of the Foundation Board, which oversees its endowment, and am just
finishing the job of chair of a Search Committee for a new CEO for the
Symphony. That has been an exciting project as we searched internationally
and will announce our new CEO within the next two weeks.
Connie does data base
work for non-profits and is on the board of a group that sponsors chamber
music concerts here in Fearrington Village. All of this helps keeps us out
of the house and gives us exercise for our gray cells.
For those of you who might
remember my mother, she finally passed away a year ago, just 17 days short
of her 109th birthday. She was a tough lady, who had lived independently in
her retirement community in Lititz, PA, until she was 101. We have a
daughter living in NYC with two grandkids (15 & 12) and a son living in San
Francisco with a grand daughter (8). Those are both wonderful places to
visit, but we wish they were a bit nearer so that we could see both
generations more frequently.
In the summers we've taken to
fleeing to Door Co., WI, to escape the local heat and humidity. We'll be
there again this year, after we pay a visit to Sicily, a spot that has been
on our "must visit" list for many years. No sure if we'll make it back for
the 65th or not, but, in the meantime, if any of you come to
Raleigh-Durham-Chapel Hill area, please look us up. Bob
September
2008:
Bill, Since getting home, I've
used a Firefox browser, instead of Safari, and am able to
open up all the info on the class web page. Thus there is
no need to do anything on your end to help us Mac users.
(You can pass along to any of our Mac users that they can
download a free copy of Firefox from the internet.)
It was
good to see you and again many thanks for keeping up the web page. Do hope
you'll give us a call the next time you plan on being in Cary. Bob Eby

Born April 15, 1930 at Powellton (a small mining
camp) south east of Beckley, West Virginia. He is a true depression baby from
Appalachia. His mother died when he was five years old and when his father
remarried he inherited his stepmothers family, which gave him three extended
families. As a child growing up in the mountains he became very comfortable in
the woods. At age eleven his family moved to Mt Lebanon a suburb of
Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, where he spent his teenage years. It was then off to
Franklin Collage in Indiana for a year before returning home to work for a year
then it was off to what is now Case/Western Reserve University where he studied
Civil Engineering. In 1952 he was drafted for the Korean Conflict and when he
was relived of active duty in1954 he returned to Cleveland and soon went to work
for General Electric Lighting Division. He was later transferred to The
Providence Base Works in Rhode Island where he became the Manager of Quality
Control and then Materials Manager. In 1981 after management cut backs at GE
he took a position with General Dynamics, Electric Boat Division helping to
build Atomic Submarines. After retiring in 1994 he moved to Rose Hill and now
does estimating and he is a cash flow specialist helping people obtain a lump

As a result of a fall in my family room
last February I am now in Bright View senior living at 3450 Gallows Road,
Annandale VA after stays in Virginia Hospital Center and 2 rehab facilities.
I eventually want to get back to my single story house in Arlington, VA.
The patients / residents are very friendly. I'm currently wheel chair bound
but hope to get back to a walker or cane. Glad to hear 103 of the class are
still this side of the turf. After 40 years I am still on the board of the
Potomac River Jazz Club and have been to the French Quarter Jazz Festival
in New Orleans 15 times. Chas. July 2023
Bill,
enjoyed getting together last night. I went to many of the previous reunions
and stayed in touch with
Igor Alexeff
until he passed.
Igor
won the Westinghouse Award for Physics in 1948 for Pennsylvania which got
him a scholarship to Harvard. His first job after graduating from Harvard was
helping design the Nautilus the first atomic sub. He spent the rest of his life
in the Oak Ridge, TN, area and I got to see him occasionally when I went to jazz
festivals in Chattanooga. After my wife died in London in 2006 while we were
on vacation, I spent many years with my late friend Nora Bell who
passed away 4 years ago. She and I attended the 65th reunion. By the way,
after our reunion last night I talked with
Bud Keen
for another 15 or 20 minutes. Chas - November 2022.
Zoom reunion sounds great. I am
used to Zoom meetings because I am still on the board of the Potomac River Jazz
Club and we often use Zoom for meetings We have a diverse group. One of our
board members is a retired NBC Producer and another is the widow of a French
General with homes in Paris and Chevy Chase MD. I've been on this board for 40
years. Saturday would probably work best for me. - October 2022.
Chas is still active - he replied
to my general email by saying, “Very good to hear from you it has been a long
time. I'm still in my home and active on the board of the Potomac River Jazz
Club which just celebrated 50 years in the Washington/Baltimore area and also
hang out at the Arlington Moose Lodge and Arlington Fairfax Elks.” - August
2022
Chas writes: Good to hear from
you. Expect all '48 grads are undergoing cabin fever and checking supplies of t
p. My friend Nora passed in 2018 and I miss her considerably. I'm still
a homeowner and have Meals on Wheels for how long the virus crisis lasts. After
the all clear I hope to get back to the Potomac River Jazz Club and Moose along with several other fraternal organizations.
How many of us are still around? (122 as far as I know but from experience
that is high,
Bill)
- April 2020
Charles writes: I'm still doing alright but my friend Nora is
in hospice care where she lives with COPD and lung cancer. I recently had
a laser procedure on my left eye which has greatly improved my vision. I
got my driver's license renewed using a statement from my optometrist that
my vision is still good enough to drive. I don't drive at night. I take a
break from the TV to listen to internet radio on my computer using one
source that has 35,000 radio stations playing 80 different types of music
from all over the world. I have another source that has radio stations in
every country in Europe. I have a sub woofer on my computer so the sound
quality is quite good. A friend in the Moose has access to government
computers that have been refurbished so I have a lap top and desk top that
are both Windows 10. The government gets rid of all computers once their
warranty expires. I'm still active in the Potomac River Jazz Club which has
been around since 1971 - October 2008
Just realized this was the
month the Class of 1948 had planned for a 70th reunion. A year
after the 65th reunion I developed macro degeneration in both
eye but am getting by with limitations. I get a shot in my good eye once a
month. My friend Nora is having a party next Saturday for friends
and relatives while she is still here since she has terminal cancer. These
later years sure aren't easy.
Pittsburgh has been a rust belt
survivor and is now high tech and a designation for tourists. Expect the red
tide on the Gulf side will discourage tourist this Winter for Florida. Hope
you and your family are well. Chas E - September 2018
I should have assumed
the reunion was cancelled. Bicycle riding used to be a weekly event for me
too until a few years ago. As I may have mentioned I used to be on the
Arlington County Bicycle Advisory Committee which was involved with county
bike trails. The Chesapeake and Ohio Canal was planned to connect
Washington and Pittsburgh but ended in Cumberland, MD with the advent of
railroads. The canal towpath has always been a favorite for biking and I
was on it most Summers. In recent years they finally built a bike trail
from Pittsburgh to Washington partly using the canal towpath. I still ride
a stationary bike 20 minutes daily. A current interest is internet radio
and I have access to every country in the world that broadcasts using Radio
Rage and other sources through my computer. The sound quality is perfect
unlike short wave. If you like the big band sound type in KCEA on your
computer which is in the San Francisco Bay area and broadcasts big band
music 24/7 commercial free. Another favorite is WWOZ New Orleans which
plays all the music heard in that city. Iill get around to the Potomac
River Jazz Club, Moose, Elks and American Legion. Chas Enlind -
January, 2018
Bill,
very sorry to hear of
Bob Woeber's passing. I've attended many of the MtL reunions and enjoyed
the opportunities to see classmates I seldom see since leaving the Pittsburgh
area. I regret I won't be at the 70th reunion but don't drive at night although
I still drive in daylight. Nora and I are scheduled to be on a cruise out of
Baltimore that will be stopping at Port Canaveral next month on the way to the
Bahamas. Again, very sad news about Bob. Chas Enlind - January,
2018
Chas writes from
Arlington,
VA: Bill,
it is good to hear from you. Since you still are biking you might be
interested that I used to be on the Arlington County Bicycle Advisory
Committee which makes suggestions for the County Board and takes the Board
on annual rides to show trouble spots on the County bike trails. My bike
riding now is limited to my stationary bike for 20 minutes. November 2017
Good to hear from you. I've
been slowed down some by macular degeneration in both eyes. I can still
drive in the daytime but rely on friends and cabs for getting around to jazz
gigs, etc. at night.
Nora and I still go on
cruises out of Baltimore to the Caribbean and most recently went on a cruise to
Bermuda.
In recent years, Pittsburgh has
been cited as one of the best places to live in the U S. Pitt is the largest
employer in Pittsburgh and is affiliated with 27 hospitals. Although Pitt lost
to Miami yesterday they will probably get a decent bowl bid and are predicted to
play Mississippi State.
Hope you and your family are
well. I heard
Igor Alexeff
died of Lou Gehrig's disease a few years back.
I'm still active in the Potomac
River Jazz Club. Chas – November 2015
Charles writes:
Nora and I got to all our usual destinations in 2012. We went to
the North Carolina Jazz Festival in Wilmington, NC in February, French
Quarter Festival in New Orleans in April, Hot Steamed Jazz Festival in
Essex, CT, on our way to Cape Cod in June and Cape May, NJ, in September.
I'm still active in the
Potomac River Jazz Club and get out to hear bands 2 or 3 times a week. January
14 we are going on a 12 day cruise out of Baltimore to the southern Caribbean
which is a great way to break up Winter. Baltimore is only an hour away and I
can park on the dock for $15 a day. Nora Bell and I would like to
attend the reunion. Chas - December 2012
April 2011:
Hi. Not too much to report for 2011 so far but Nora and I handled
the Winter by taking a 12 day cruise in January to the southern Caribbean
out of Baltimore on the Enchantment of the Seas and dropped anchor at 6
islands: Labadee, Haiti, Dominican Republic, San Juan, Puerto Rico, St.
Thomas, St. Martin and Tortola. We missed the only snowfall in the D C
area. In February we drove to the North Carolina Jazz Festival in
Wilmington where one of Nora's daughters live and next week we are
going to New Orleans for the French Quarter Festival which had 150 bands
last year playing on 17 outdoor stages for a crowd of 512,000 fans. Those
Packards really hold up well but I wish they got better gas mileage.
Chas
Nora
Bell and I just got back May 4 from a jazz festival in Chattanooga, TN.
We enjoyed seeing
Igor Alexeff
(deceased)
in Knoxville on our way back. In April we went to the French Quarter
Festival in New Orleans. The FQF had 512,000 attendance with 150 bands
playing on 17 outdoor stages throughout the Quarter. - May 2010
Igor Alexeff
(deceased),
reported in May 2010: Charles
Enlind and Nora dropped in to visit us on our farm on Monday, May
5. They were returning home from a Jazz festival in Chattanooga, TN. Both
are in great shape.
August 2008:
Just a note to let you know how much Nora and I enjoyed the reunion.
Although she wasn't a member of the class she felt very welcome. The
weekend was extremely well planned.
We
didn't get to the afternoon event because Nora had never been to
Pittsburgh before and I was also curious to see the changes downtown so we
opted to take the light rail down to Station Square and see the rivers on
the Gateway Clipper tour. I also got to see an old friend Scott Hayes who
had been a neighbor. Bob
Woeber (deceased)
was also quite helpful in many ways including suggesting my using MapQuest
to get directions to all the places I needed to find. I've known Nora
for 20 years through the Potomac River Jazz Club. She is originally from
Dublin, Ireland but has been in the U S for over 60 years. Chas
January 2008 -
Just got back from a 10 day jazz
cruise to 6 islands in the Caribbean on the Holland America M S Maasdam. My
friend Nora Bell, who was born in Dublin, Ireland 12 days before I
was born in the Chicago area in 1930 and I plan to attend the 60th
reunion. We also plan to go to the French Quarter Festival in New Orleans
in April and the Great Connecticut Traditional Jazz Festival and Cape Cod in
July. Looking forward to the reunion - Chas
February 2007: The only news is that the Potomac River Jazz Club (PRJC)
Board elected me President last month. A group of us from the club will be going to Hotel St.
Pierre in New Orleans for the French Quarter Festival in April. The FQF
draws around 500,000 people to hear bands from N O and from around the
world.
November 2006 -
I have several items that
are still at an early stage. I was just asked last week to become President
of the Potomac River Jazz Club for 2007 but I believe the board has to vote
on it before it becomes official.
Also,
45 years ago I used to go out with a Dutch woman who worked for the
International Monetary Fund in Washington. We haven't seen each other for
43 years since that is when I married my late wife Pat. To make a
long story short, in a conversation with another former I M F employee
several months ago I found out that my friend had retired to Miami and
never married. Although we haven't seen each other again yet, there has
been a fair amount of e mail going back and forth. My friend currently
helps run the South Florida Writer's Association. We are just renewing an
old friendship so its a bit premature to mention her name but it is
interesting to find someone like this after so many years.
My
daughter Susan has been very supportive since her mother's passing.
Luckily she also lives in the Washington area near Dulles Airport so we get
together often.
Chas. Enlind,
Arlington,
Virginia
June 2006
- My wife of 46 years, Pat, died in London, June 1, while we were on
vacation after crossing over on the QM 2 to Southampton. We were only on
our second day in London and had just gone through the British Museum when
she had a heart attack on the sidewalk outside the museum. She was advised
she had a heart condition in 2001 but never told me or our daughter Susan.
Susan
had given us a 18 day tour of Europe which we were just starting out on. Susan
flew to London as soon as she heard her mother was ill and helped
tremendously with all the arrangements. Pat's service was on June
17 at the Fairlington United Methodist Church, Alexandria, VA and she will
be buried in Albemarle, NC on June 24.
This was something that was totally
unexpected. Chas
Got down to Daytona for 10 days and rented a
condo owned by a friend in our area. Daytona is in a demolition stage with
many of the mom and pop motels razed with high rise condos soon to follow.
An unexpected highlight was the 1906-2006
celebration of racing on Ormond Beach which involved a rally of probably
most of the Stanley Steamers in the US. Although most of these cars were
about a hundred years old, all were in immaculate condition. We got to see
them at The Casements, John D. Rockefeller's home in Ormond Beach. The next
day they were supposed to appear on Ormond Beach but that was the day we
were leaving. Luckily I had my camera and was able to get photos of most
all of the cars.
I meant to give you a call while we were in
Daytona but time got away from me and a number of the things we usually do
down there didn't get accomplished. The weather was in the 70s and 80s
every day which is a real bonus this time of year in central Florida.
I'm still active in the Potomac River Jazz
Club. Many of our members are planning to go to New Orleans for
the annual French Quarter Festival which will go on in April as planned
before Katrina. We will miss this year because we are going to Pat's
50th reunion at UNC Greensboro which falls on the same weekend as the French
Quarter Festival.
On May 23 we will be on the Queen Mary 2 to
cross over for an 18 day tour of Europe that our daughter Susan is
giving us. When she graduated from George Mason University we gave her a
similar tour of Europe so she is giving us one now. Since we have never
been beyond Canada or the Caribbean, it will be a definite change of pace.
Hope you and your family are all well.
Chas. Enlind - January 2006:
Chas
writes: Thanks for the Class update. Our Summer was a repeat of our usual
destinations. New Orleans for the French Quarter Festival in April,
Virginia Beach in May, Mt Gretna, PA in June for the 28th appearance of the
Black Eagle Jazz Band at Music at Gretna, Great Connecticut Traditional
Jazz Festival in July followed up by a week on Cape Cod.
My only detour was 5 days
in Fairfax Hospital for tests in September which happened when I was
scheduled to be Co Chair of the 35th annual Jazz Picnic of the Potomac River
Jazz Club so I missed that gig. Luckily the above tests for
dizziness and a possible stroke were negative. October is a busy month in
this area.
Yesterday I went to the Fells Point Festival
In Baltimore which is the largest street festival on the East Coast and
today we went to the OKTOBERFEST at Fort Belvoir, VA which brings in local
bands as well as occasional bands from Germany. Next weekend is the
Waterford Festival in Waterford, VA which has been designated as the best
preserved village in the U S . It was founded by Quakers in the 1740s and
was the only place in VA to send troops to the Union side in the Civil War.
Next time I'll try not to be so brief,
Chas - October 2005
December 2004: Good to hear from you.
Not much news here besides making plans for
the usual Winter getaway to Daytona Beach
and April plans to go to the French Quarter
Festival in New Orleans.
Daytona has an interesting solution to the damage done by the hurricanes
to hotels
and motels according to the Daytona Beach News Journal. Instead of
rebuilding, it appears
that most of the damaged mom and pop motels on the beach are going to
be razed and replaced
by high rise condos. I think 38 motels have already been razed. or
scheduled to be. It will be hard on the
average tourist and may eliminate Spring
Break and downsize other seasonal event big
draws but definitely make Daytona more upscale. Its predicted souvenir
shops will give way to
retail shops catering to the new condos.
We had neighbors back in Mt Lebanon who
moved down to Daytona in the 1950s which
prompted my parents to start visiting there
and stay for the Winters after my father retired
from U S Steel in 1955. Except for a few years
when we went on jazz cruises in the Caribbean,
Pat and I have kept up the tradition of spending a few weeks in Daytona
every January. It definitely has its rough edges but
has enough positives to warrant coming back.
My only ailment so far is marginal
high blood pressure which is under control
with 2 pills a day. Now that I am retired I don't
get as much exercise as I did when working so
I need to change that. I'm still active on the board of the Potomac River Jazz Club and have
been Co Chair of
our last two annual Jazz Fests in September
held halfway between Washington and Baltimore. Best wishes for the new year

as
well
as

and
we
are
now
forming

We
are
driving
down
to
Daytona
in
a

Our
house
is
close
enough
to
the

that
it
was
shaken
on
September

probably
from
an

breaking
the

barrier
trying
to
chase
the
airliner
that
went
into

Ever
since
September
11
the
Air

has
been
flying
24
hour
surveillance
over
both
the
Washington

and
NYC.
I
believe
the
local
air

is
coming
from
Langley

while
that
over
NYC
is
coming
from
the
former
Otis

on
Cape

is
now
a
Massachusetts

I
was
at
Otis
in

Thunderbirds.
Our

has
lived
through
the
two
worst

on
the

The

of

was
beyond
anything
even
Hollywood
could
come
up
with
in
the
way
of
special

I
used
to
be

but
am
now
averaging
about
a
12

which

we
stayed
in

because
it

enough

back
in

we

it
a
convenient
retirement
area.
Also,
we
are
halfway
between

where
we

I

Chas' Biography
After acquiring an AB in Economics at Pitt I became a Graduate Assistant
Instructor in the Economics Dept there while doing graduate work at Pitt.
In 1960 I came to Washington, D C and became a Labor Economist with the Wage
and Hour Division of the Department of Labor and shortly thereafter met my
wife Pat who was a graduate of the University of North Carolina at
Greensboro (formerly known as Woman's College).
Our daughter
Susan
was born in 1964 and attended George Mason University in Fairfax, VA.
She worked with the Space Station project for Boeing and McDonnell Douglas
until that project was moved to Houston. She has worked most recently
with Lockheed Martin in Network Management.
In 1991 and 1992 she was a cheerleader for the Redskins and participated in
the Super Bowl at Minneapolis against Buffalo. The following year she
went to London when the NFL sponsored an exhibition game between the
Redskins and 49ers.
I retired in 1988 by combining my 28 years with the Dept. of Labor and 2
years in the Army for the required 30 years.
I'm currently in my fourth 3 year term on the
Board of Directors of the Potomac River Jazz Club which promotes traditional
jazz in the Washington, Baltimore and Annapolis area.
I'm active in the Elks, Legion and Moose and was designated Moose of the
Year for Arlington this last March.
For travel we mainly go to jazz festivals and jazz cruises and get to
Daytona Beach, Fl in December and January for a few weeks and up to
Connecticut and Cape Cod, MA in the summers.
I can still get around on a bicycle and was on the Bicycle Advisory
Committee to the Arlington County Board which involved the maintenance and
extension of the County bike trails. |

Bill and Kay @ 60th Reunion |
The news
from here is varied: In September the Erdman clan (21
at last count) had our annual "Dad's Birthday Challenge."
Here I challenge all to ride a bicycle my age (94) in miles
in 30 days, and/or in 7 consecutive days during the month.
Only 2 of the crew beat me - I rode 306 miles (my age
3 times) and 6 times I road 94 miles in 7 consecutive days.
Boy is next year going to be a challenge!
We survived the 2 quickie hurricanes Helene and
Milton with minor wind damage. The Orlando area was not in the direct path
of any hurricanes this year. Our home is not in a flood prone area either.
I guess we will stay put for a while.
My caregiving role continues. Kay is slowly
loosing her short term memory and is no longer the wonderful, fun-loving
sweetheart I married 67 years ago. I've changed also but if you are going
through a similar period you understand what I am saying. Kay was my
caregiver for the first 64 years and now it is my turn. We still travel
although it is exhausting and we are totally zonked when we get home.
Going to Austin, TX, for Thanksgiving but staying home Christmas. We chose
to use in-home healthcare rather than go to a facility and with 4 hour, 2 days a
week outside support we are reasonably content with the situation - not great
but tolerable. Communal living was not our choice.
I'm still doing website maintenance and design plus
bike riding but sometimes it is a struggle. My best to all you that are
having similar experiences - I credit several men's support groups, our
church, friends, family and a strong belief in a God of love for getting me this
far and in such reasonably decent shape - October 2024
Joe Miller sent me an email complaining that I hadn't
replied to his cryptic note. I did reply but
probably didn't remember to send it or filed it.
Trying to remember what he said and what I said I realized
that dementia is a sneaky menace. My wife Kay is
suffering with event-related dementia and I am her care
giver. What happens when the caregiver is getting
goofy? Easy answer: Sings, Boom, boom, ain't
it great to be crazy? One stanza is:
Boom, boom, ain't it great to be crazy.
Giddy and foolish the whole day through
Boom, boom, ain't it great to be crazy.
Way down South where the bananas grow
a flea stepped on an elephant's toe.
the elephant cried, with tears in his eyes,
"Why don't you pick on someone your own size?"
I think, in my case, that 93 ˝ is the
knee in my dementia curve. It is all downhill from now on! Bill <><
- March 2024
The update
on
Peggy Crissman brings much sadness to many of us
that still follow the Mt Lebanon Class of '48 saga. My
wife, Kay, has event related dementia from a
hemoglobin problem several years ago. Dementia of all
kinds is a sad occurrence and almost overwhelming event for
the caregivers. There are 3 major levels of dementia -
Event Related, Age related and Alzheimer's. Thanks for
the sad news. We all need to pray for
Peggy, her caregivers, her loved ones and all our
classmates that are caregivers or need one. It is a
lonely journey. - November 2023.
We did it!
Kay and I saw Niagara Falls! We never, in all
our travels, had ever taken the time to see the falls.
We took a Christian Tour out of Charlotte, NC. It was
a bus tour - 1 ˝ days up and 1 ˝ days back with 2 days on
the Canadian side. It wasn't crowded, weather was
great, Falls were wet, guide was great, driver was
carefully, other turrets on bus adopted Kay and I as their
surrogate grandparents and took very good care of us.
Even had dinner on the Ohio River in Pittsburgh on the way
back, with an overnight in Canonsburg. As a caregiver
this was an exhausting trip but Kay had an enjoyable
time.
The toughest part of the trip was the 1 ˝ day bus
ride back from Niagara! The most relaxing part was the AmTrak sleeper to Cary,
NC, and back. - October 2023.
It is my
birthday month and a very interesting one. So far this
moth I've ridden more miles (150) than I am old (93).
However it has changed my marriage relationship of 66 years
- Kay now says, "I can't believe I'm married to a 93
year-old man!" My only rebuttal is, "I don't believe
it either!" - September 2023.
It is almost
August and no news8 has been sent to me for your
edification (a MtL English word). I may have to add
more boring stuff about me - like Kay and I spent 2
weeks in northern North Carolina, just South of Sparta and
the Blue Ridge Parkway. It was great getting away from
the Florida heat and enjoying the cool, mountain air.
Our son and I rented 2 electric bikes and rode over 185
miles through the beautiful countryside. I did not
feel comfortable on the e-bike but it did carry over a lot
of scenic roads. When I first rode my pedal-powered
bike at home, I checked the tires twice, thinking they had
gone flat!
We actually rode the entire width of
the Blue Ridge Parkway, several times - make sure you read that correctly.
July 2023. *Actually, 6 of you survivors did write back to me after I sent
out an email pleading for updates - Thanks,
Charles,
Dick,
Marge,
Mary,
Paul
and Suzanne.
- July 2023
Oops! It looks like I
haven't listened to my own pleadings of "Write to me more often as I need to
hear the latest from each and everyone of our Classmates". Since
November I have been spending a lot of my time as a caregiver for my wife.
Kay suffered a drop in her hemoglobin to 4.3 (way below normal of 12
or above and 6 or 7 is considered serious to fatal. I almost "lost"
her. My hat goes off to all caregivers - they are a unappreciated
breed.
Physically and mentally I'm still
active - biking and maintaining 5 websites keep me going but seem to take twice
as long to get things done as it used to. I'm not sure the "Golden Years"
is an accurate description of being 92 - I would change the metal connotation to
the "Lead Years" as it seems that a lot of lead has settled in my butt. - March
2023
Hurricane IAN and Nicole missed us! We were most fortunate,
they didn't even fill our pool to overflowing. Lost one
small tree and that was the extent of it. A large portion of
Central Florida had major flooding along the St Johns River
and tributaries. In our area the Spanish Moss was the
big looser.
Ten
classmates are now signed up for a
Zoom meeting
this November, 2022.
Thanks to
Bud
Keen, I have been hearing some good and some bad
news as he challenged me to find someone to organize a 75th
reunion next year. I countered his suggestion with a
plan to do a Zoom meeting instead.
The good news is that by sending out my old MtL
email list, I have heard from several people. The bad news is that I also
received notification of voided email addresses. I have to assume, this
late in our life journey, that these folks are no longer with us. Per a
1948 actuary table a white, male or female, born in 1930, had a life expectancy
of 58 years! You and I have made liars out of the folks that put that
table together. I rode my bike 11.2 miles this morning and have ridden 101
miles so far this month (the 13th) - I think the table is wrong!
Because of our collective ages, I have to treat a
non-working email as an indication that the individual is no longer with us.
With that thought in mind I will move those classmates to the deceased listings.
It hurts every time I do this shuffle process.
I'll keep you up to date on a Zoom meeting as I
work on the project. - August 2022.
2022!
Who would have thunk it! We are still alive and
kicking! At least some of us are still around. I
find myself in a conundrum - who is still looking at this
mess occasionally? Kay and I are functioning
fairly well. I'm still riding my bike almost every day
- Our daughter, Karen, and I have been having a
competition since my 91st Birthday in September and as of
January 6th have ridden 1,074 and 1,978 miles respectively-
me in Florida and Karen in California. Not bad
for an old man, but I have to keep it up, 4 miles is not
much of a lead. I joked with her the other day and
said, "There is a guy on an e-bike chasing me - I think it
is the 'Grim Reaper' and 'e-bike' stands for 'evil-bike'!" -
January 8, 2022.
Here it
is, September. Wow! Things are not really
booming around our home. Haven't heard from many of
the remaining class. I can only assume that someone
looks here occasionally. I wish they would let me know
they are still alive and kicking.
COVI-19 has bypassed most of our family across the
country - everyone got vaccinated early and avoided the rush. One son had
a mild case months after he was stuck. Another son is a lead chemist with
Pfizer so we are kept up to date with the latest information. He was part
of the team that helped increase the vaccine quantity available after the
initial release.
Because news is scarce I will reluctantly bore you
with my activities. My family has joined me this year in my goal of riding
my bike my age. I'm 91 so I challenged myself to ride 91 miles this month,
ride 91 miles over at least one 7 day period and ride 91 days in one day.
I accomplished the first two in the first 2 weeks. The third challenge is
in my dreams - my best day has been 19 miles, a long way from 91. The 4 of
us involved in the challenge have ridden 531 miles so far (September 13th).
It has been fun with our daughter, son and his wife riding together, virtually.
September 13, 2021.
Incidentally, I don't ride an electric bicycle.
I always try to ride with the wind and downhill.
Picture above says it
all! Bike accident described below is behind me - I'm back up to 6
to 12 miles a day on my new bike. Did over 200 miles one week in
March! April 2021
Is there anyone left out
there? I haven’t heard a peep from any of you gals and guys! It sure
makes it hard to update a web site about the “Golden Years” of
the Class of ’48. I expected it to be the other way around - as you sat
around in your mask and hand sanitizer, looking for something to do, I
was sure you would take this opportunity to write me several newsy
notes. It is your loss as I am forced to bore you with my
misadventures.
This
year I had set a goal of 90 miles on my bike, the week of my 90th
birthday. I achieved the goal and beyond - 118 miles in 5 days bracketing my
birthday. In fact I did 290 miles the month of September. My family gave me a
great celebration via Zoom. Seeing all my family was a fitting reward.
HOWEVER, don’t be too excited about my skills on a bike. At 6:30am, October 7th,
your knight of the road was hit broadside by a woman that ran a red traffic
light and demolished my bike and also did the same to me! As I crossed an
intersection on a green light, I looked right and saw only the hood of a
full-size pickup truck as it hit me. My only reflex was to straight-arm the
hood - this saved my life. The action threw me from my bike which she then ran
over. If I had stayed on it, I would not be writing this today. The good
news: I walked away from it, mostly cuts and bruises, a sore hip and leg,
dislocated thumb from the hood, driver was insured, passerby gave police an
eye-witness account of what happened and I had it all recorded on my helmet
camera.
Kinda
morbid, Bill. Any less intense information? Yes, there is - My camera was torn
from my helmet and landed out in the road - five cars drove over it (recorded of
course). Not light-hearted enough? Well, if you must have something to laugh
at I need to tell you that every part of my body was covered by cuts and
bruises, except my face, so as I laid on a slab in the ER, I looked like what I
was - a 90 year-old bag of bones. I called my wife to tell her that I made it
to the hospital. To do this lying down, I had to hold my cell phone over my
head. Yep. I dropped it on my forehead and drew more blood! It was the first
time I laughed all morning.
OK
people, this is what you get for not sending me some updates. Write to me.
Save me from myself. Bill <><, November 2020
November 1st and the only news I've
received since COVID-19 hit has been sad news - we lost
Joan
Coleman in August. Another beautiful person has
moved on without us. One thing however, it is nice to think back
and remember someone as pleasant and sweet as I remember her.
As for me, I reached and passed my goal for my 90th
birthday - I set a goal of riding my bicycle 90miles the week of my 90th.
I went 118 miles, 28 miles over. I've ridden over 2,700 miles this year so
I guess I have to say I'm still in reasonable shape although the miles have not
all been pain free. I fall off every so often because of poor eyesight and
balance problems but I haven't broken any bones so far, just some nasty cuts and
bruises. I hope to ride till either the wheels fall off or I can't get
back on after I fall off. Send news, please - November 2020.
It
is the middle of August and we keep on, keeping on.
I haven't heard much from MtL guys and gals so I figured I might as well
send you a glamour shot of me after riding my bike and working in our
yard today. An 8 X 10 glossy of this vision of loveliness is
available for just a dollar, three ninety-eight plus postage and
handling. Put your order in now as quantities are limited and this
will be my last photo with my favorite hat - it has seen better days and
the sun is coming through the holes in the top and burning my less-than
hairy head. - August 2020
Since
I last reported in I have been busy with the usual stuff - Visiting
family members, travel and bike riding 6 to 10 miles a day.
This, of course all came to a screeching halt with the COVID-19
except I now ride further because there is no traffic. How are YOU
doing? - April 2020
In
July we flew to Oakland for a short visit with our daughter Karen's
family. Then met our son, Don, and his wife in Juneau, embarked
on a jaunt with Christian Tours that included Alaska Marine Ferry to
Skagway, bus to Whitehorse, Tock, Fairbanks and Denali, train to
Talkeetna, bus to Anchorage, and a boat tour through Kenai Fjords
National Park. The ice fields were sad looking from Global Warming but
the wildlife was abundant in spite of hot weather and smoke from
numerous wild fires. In September we took a bus tour through the
Canadian Rockies and were happy to see the beauty without all the wild
fire smoke.
We also had a
wedding in August as our granddaughter, Claire,
got married. Times are changing - Her one year
old daughter, Rosa, attended. - October 2019
Happy
Fathers Day to the men of MtL 48 - My son dressed me up for the
occasion: ====>
Welcome to 2019! 2018 was one of our
most interesting years - Probably most notable because we lived through
it! Our first Great Grandchild*, bicycle accidents, tours,
reasonably good health overall and knowledge that I'm still God's
favorite - Of course, so are you).
*Blessed with our
first Great-Grandchild in June - Claire's daughter, Rose,
was a 1 pound, 13 oz preemie. It is a different world now a days.
We just signed up for a July, Christian Tour of
Alaska. We plan to do the Juneau fly-in, ferry to Skagway, bus to
Fairbanks, train to Anchorage and home again. Our son Donald and his wife
will be joining us. We probably made God laugh again - He does not always
agree with our plans. January 2019
It has been a busy and interesting Summer.
Took a tour of "The Canyons and Mesas of the Southwest" in May and both
caught the flu on the flight back from New Mexico (So much for flu
shots).
Blessed with our first Great-Grandchild in June.
Fell off my bike in August and spent 8 days in the
hospital as a result of the bacteria in the mulch pile I landed in (Choice of
that or a tree or an unmarked missing section of concrete). No visible
damage but in 4 days Nocardiosis was eating my arm from wrist to elbow.
Nocardia is sometimes called "The Gardener's bacteria" because it is found in
dirt and mulch - Rare in the US but prevalent in more agrarian countries.
I would have been better off it I had hit the tree! Three to 6 months
antibiotics to go.
Our trip to Amish Country
(Lancaster, PA) and Washington DC's Museum of the Bible was not marred by
hurricane Florence as we had sunny days while she raged through the Carolinas. - September 2018
We made it through
Christmas with visits from most of our kids and grandkids and now are
watching Florida's excuse for spring as many flowering trees and bushes
are blooming and most of the snow birds are thinking about staying here
rather than head north for more Winter weather. Kay and I
have lived her for over 50 years now and I can't remember ever wanting
to move back. However I must admit I am not enjoying it as much as
I used to - too many Yankees and their automobiles clogging the streets
and highways! I think you would be wise to stay there and just
send money. March, 2018
Kay & I took a Motor Coach tour of New
England this October. Nine days out of Charlotte, NC, to Portland,
Maine, via NY, VT and NH to see the colors of Fall. Tour included
boat tour on the Hudson River, boat tour of Lake George, NY, Mt
Washington Cog Railway trip, Cafe Lafayette Dinner Train, Hobo Lunch on
Lake Winnipesaukee Scenic Train, Lighthouse Cruise out of Portland
Harbor followed by a Lobster Dinner, Lunch in "Little Italy" followed by
New York City Harbor Cruise. Weather was excellent, leaves were
beautiful and overnight AmTrak from Orlando to North Carolina and back
was icing on the cake. It was fun looking at the leaves, knowing I
didn't have to rake them! Up to 60 miles a week on my bicycle now.
- October 2017
Irma paid us a
visit this weekend! She was not pleasant! She blew all the
loose stuff out of our trees, turned off our electricity for several
hours and made a lot of noise. We've asked her not to come back.
September 2017
So far we have survived the heat this Simmer but it has been a
struggle. We did have a fun 2 ˝ months when our 22 year-old
granddaughter, Claire, from North Caroline lived with us as she served
as an intern with The United Way here in Orlando. Boy did the
energy level drop to zero when she left! We had forgotten how
hyper young people are!
I did manage to complete
a project I stated in 1989.
As a Christmas gift to Kay, I started an autobiography to chronicle our family
history with movies, stills, scrapbooks, digital images and even copies of
monologues from stand-up comedians that I had collected. In February I
began to put all this stuff into one, useable format. July 5th I finished
version #1 which was 635+ Gigs in size. I had to buy twelve 1 terabyte
external hard drives to share this history with our kids and grandkids! As
expected, some enjoyed the collection very much while others couldn't be
bothered looking at it. People are people even if they are related to you!
I've now completed version #2 as I learned a great deal from the first edition.
I suggest you think about leaving a legacy for you family - start now!
I still average 60 miles
a week on my bike (Two wheels, no motor!) -
August 2017
Everything is OK so far! Kay's knee
is healing to the point that we may be able to travel for several grandchildren graduation
ceremonies. I'm still riding my bike most
mornings (Went 14 miles today) and active at church.
It takes me a lot longer to do things but I
eventually get them done which I guess is par for
our ages. - January 2017
Twenty-sixteen has been a
different adventure for us. Kay had a
knee replaced and as she heals we find we are very
limited in our usual outdoor activities.
Travel this year will be delayed until later but we
are hopeful to start again in October. I still
ride my bike about 50 miles a week and each day am
thankful that there aren't many hills in Florida!
Incidentally my rogues gallery picture for this year
is different in that it shows my "cat vest" instead
of my usual slouch hat. I'm proud of that vest
because Kay made if for me, knowing full well
I don't like cats! After 59 years of marriage
I know when to be gracious. - August 2016
It was reunion time for
the Erdman clan (We have one every other year) so after most of the
family showed up in Orlando around Christmas time we all hustled over to
the Gulf Coast and partied on Anna Maria Island. Seventeen of us
had a wonderful time getting to know each other over again and realizing
how blessed we have been as a family. I was able to bike around
the island with kids and grandkids and was happy to realize that I could
keep up to almost all of them - some I even "rode into the ground"! December
2015
Kay
and I spent an interesting 2 week in Iceland this September.
We drove around the island, stayed at B&Bs and ate fish and lamb every
chance we had. The people were wonderful, the scenery we saw was
beautiful, the sun we saw very rarely. I don't think Iceland is
for everyone - it was quite different from any other foreign country we
have visited. Maybe if the weather had been nicer we would have
enjoyed it more. If you are a "comfort" traveler, go there with
medium expectations.
Maybe being 85 had
something to do with it but I had a marvelous birthday celebration at
a farm-stay in Northern Iceland. The 12 year-old daughter baked me a
pastry loaf and gave me a quart of milk, right from her own cow! Doesn't
get much better than that! - October 2015
Kay and I just returned
from a week in Puerto Morelos (30 miles South of Cancun), Mexico.
We were joined by our daughter and her family and the 6 of us enjoyed it
immensely. We rented a home on the Gulf and used it as a base fro
seeing the countryside. Puerto Morelos is where the Mexican
come to vacation so we were in the minority and didn't see or hear a lot
of Americans. Two of us spoken reasonable Spanish so we got along
well.
We
snorkeled on the coral reef, toured several Mayan ruins, swam in the Cenote Siete Bocas (Fancy name for 7 sinkholes!) and ate at typical Mexican
restaurants full of non-English speaking diners. We did not drink
the water and stayed healthy!
We saw some spectacular sand sculptures on the beach in town:
Our "Gated" community was "protected" by a wooden bar, raised and
lowered by by hand. It separated the paved road from the dirt /
potholed road to our "Villa" (I use the term very loosely!). Don't
get me wrong - it was what we expected and wanted. We had too much
fun to be worried about the small things. Spring 2015
Just
put in an article in my Lehigh University website about a classmate and accepted his challenge for a bike race. I added a picture of
me pedaling up the approach to the bike bridge over the Ohio River just
East of Louisville, KY. Kay and I biked the trail there on our way
back from a 2 month, tent camping / biking trip out West. We had to come
back early because the smoke from the forest fires in Alberta, British
Columbia and western states were overwhelming. Enjoyed
ourselves in spite of the adjustment we had to make.
A quick example of the problems
due to smoke - What started out as a one-day, 300 mile trip ended up as
a three-day, 1,600 mile odyssey! Not many roads between Lake
Louise and Jasper. - October 2014
May 9th, 2014 - Sitting
here updating the web and thinking, "Why don't people write and tell me
what's going on in their lives?" It dawned on me that I
haven't done it either so here is my latest:
Kay and I are getting older
also, right along with the rest of you. We keep moving but we we're doing
it a lot slower. No major problems so we checked our 200,000+ mile Honda
Odyssey and decided to do another 3 month trip this Summer. We still ride
our bikes every day so that will be part of the trip but a big difference will
be the addition of our daughter, Karen, and our grandson, Wade. We are
blessed that they want to camp, hike and bike with us. Keep active
everyone, it seems to help.
August 8th, 2013 - Kay
and I just returned from a 2 1/2 month driving trip out West and
Mid-Atlantic to see all our kids and grandkids. We had a family
reunion in Three Rivers, CA, during this time as well as a side camping
trip with two of our kid's families. For the most part we were
doing our usual, although it gets tougher each year, camping in a tent,
riding our bikes and just enjoying the beautiful world God has given us.
When we got back we were just too
pooped to get in the car again for the drive to the MtL Reunion. Maybe
we'll make it to the 70th!
December 1st
- Had a great Thanksgiving with family and looking forward
to Christmas with more family. I wish you all a great
Christmas Season and suggest that we all remember why we
celebrate - regardless of our belief or un-belief.
"Peace on Earth and Good Will Towards Man" is a wonderful
thought that would allow all of us to enjoy life as it is
meant to be enjoyed.
August
2012 - Just back from 2 back-to-back trips - Alaska & North Carolina
/ Michigan. Kay and I spent a month in Alaska with our
daughter Karen and her family. We flew to Anchorage with
our camping stuff, rented a car and toured the beautiful state.
The mosquitoes were bad in Denali and near McCarty but the rain was a
more consistent nemesis as it rained sometime during the day every day
but one. I have to admit that the 6th night in a wet tent was
almost the last straw! But we toughed it out at some wonderful
B&Bs to give our stuff a chance to dry out so all-in-all it was a fun
trip. The awesome beauty of Alaska and the company of our
daughter's family made for a wonderful adventure.
Our second adventure was a week in a
cabin in Maggie Valley, NC, with our son, Don, and his family followed by
"relative" stops in Lexington, KY, Louisville, Indianapolis, Kalamazoo (Son,
Dave and family), Charlottesville, VA, and Raleigh. We were gone a
month this time also. It was great telling everyone that we had come North
from Florida to get warm (In case you hadn't noticed - it was warmer in IN, MI
and NC than in FL this summer).
September 2011 - Kay
and I just got back from another cross-country jaunt. We left May
19th and got back August 29th. We saw all our kids at least once,
drove over 15,000 miles and continue to appreciate each other's company
(54 years next week!). We escaped all of the heat here at home
(Orlando, FL) after we left Austin, TX, as we were never in temperatures
above 85° (except in Zion NP) and survived a low of 17° in Bend, OR.
We continue to manage the tent-on-the-ground type camping although it is
getting tough to get upright in the morning. We encountered rain,
snow, hail, earthquakes, hurricanes, porcupines, ferry crossings and bad
drivers as we did a large loop covering the West, Canada and Michigan.
We met our daughter's family in Colorado and camped with them a week.
We carried our bicycles with us and logged over 300 miles on them.
Boy, was it great to get home and sleep in our own bed again!
We are hosting our bi-yearly family reunion
this Thanksgiving so are looking forward to seeing all 17 of our kids
and grandkids again. What a blessing it is to have all our family
well and active.
February 2011 - It's time to make God laugh and plan our
annual trip to see all our kids and grandkids. This
year we are planning on going to Austin, TX, to see son #3,
Colorado, San Francisco to see Daughter, Victoria Island,
BC, ferry to Bella Coola, BC, Jasper, Coeur d' Alene, Idaho,
Glacier, Tetons, Kalamazoo to see son #1 then home by way of
son #2 in Raleigh. We hope to camp in our faithful
tent and ride a bunch of miles on our bikes. I hate to
admit it but it is harder and harder to get out of the tent
in the morning and we opt for B&Bs more often than we used
to. We don't seem to go as far, as quickly, on our
bike either! We may be getting older after all.
August
26th, 2010 - We did it and are still good friends!
Kay and I spent 3 months on the move, seeing 3 of our
4 kids and a large part of Northern US and Southern Canada.
We spent Memorial Day near Ashville, NC, with Don and
his family, had a blast at our granddaughter's graduation in
Kalamazoo, enjoyed the Amtrak trip out and back to see
Karen in Concord, CA, where we celebrated her Masters
Degree Graduation, drove North to the Soo, East to Ottawa,
Lake St Jean, Quebec, and to Natesquan, Quebec, where we
took a supply boat to Blanc Sablon, Quebec, disembarked for
a tour of Labrador then South for 10 days in Newfoundland
where we did the B&B thing and met many wonderful "Nuffies".
Another ferry to Nova Scotia brought us to the Cabot Trail
followed by Halifax, NS, then the Bay of Fundy, NB, Acadia
NP, Maine, through New Hampshire, Vermont, upstate Ny, then
home through PA, MD, VA, NC to see Don again and then
home. !2,000+ miles not counting the train trip.
Not bad for two old duffers! We were able to ride our
bikes over 200 miles on various Rails-to-Trails along the
way. (Yep, it's the same hat!)
We plan to drive to Kalamazoo, Michigan to attend our
granddaughter's high school graduation. Then take Amtrak to
Concord, CA, and back. We'll pick up our car in
Kalamazoo and drive up the North Shore of the St Lawrence
River to Labrador, south through Newfoundland and home.
We plan to carry our bicycles and ride them part way (Only
the downhill sections). - May 2010
*I
sent my passport photo to my son, Dave, and asked him
to reduce it down to size with high resolution. This
is his results. I immediately started to let my beard
grow and bought a case of Grecian Formula Number 9. To
me it's a freaky picture as I know it's me at 79+ - probably
because I don't have my hat on. - February 2010. If
you pass the cursor over the picture you will see the "real"
me.
August
2009: Kay and I just got back from our 3 month, 13,500
mile odyssey in our Odyssey where we saw all our kids and grandchildren
twice and rode our bicycles 500 miles as well. We had one of the
best times ever and were still speaking to each other when we arrived
home. Visualize 3 months worth of junk mail in your living room
(That's what mail slots are for)! As I re-read previous notes
below it seems like we have done this type of trip before - but this was
the best! We even slept overnight in a submarine in Muskegon,
Michigan, with 2 grandkids. Highlight of the trip was a balloon
rodeo in Steamboat Springs, Colorado - what a sight as 38 hot air
balloons took to the sky!
May
2009 - Kay and I are in Austin, Texas, at the start of a
3 month driving / camping / bike riding jaunt to see all our
kids. At the end of our drive we will attend our
bi-annual family reunion to be held in Saugatuck, Michigan.
Hopefully I won't fall over a rock or get chased by any
angry buffalo this trip. - Bill <><
December 2008 -
Kay and I drove to Austin, Texas, for a week end with
our kids in their new home. Alabama, Mississippi,
Louisiana and Texas are dullsville in the winter! Kids
were great and we got in a some bike riding as my leg is
getting back in shape. Have a great Christmas Season.
October 2008 - Seven weeks after falling I now have my
leg up to 90ş range of motion and hope to start rehab in a
week. No surgery was required and very little pain
since we left Maine - PTL
September 2008: After
Bob's splendidly orchestrated
Reunion, Kay and I headed to Maine to eat leaves and see the lobster.
On the way there we stopped to see
Jack
and Bonnie
Ross,
Dave Smith
(deceased) and
Ben MacDonald. We also visited with Kathleen
Doubleday at their home on Cape Cod. We tried t to have lunch
with Joan Coleman
(deceased) but she was on her
way to visit family - Our loss.
By the time we left Acadia National Park and were
heading East toward Michigan we had bicycled over 300 miles on many
beautiful Rails to Trails in PA, NY, CT, RI, MA and ME and were in great
shape. The weather had been excellent and the trails gorgeous.
We
stopped in Camden, Maine, to camp at Camden Hills State Park and went up to
see the view of Penobscot Bay from Mt Battie. I started back to our
car for new camera batteries when I tripped over a buffalo chip (Kay
says it was a rock, but I know better) and tore 50% of my left quadricep
tendon. Ouch - Both at the time and the next morning when I crawled
from our tent to the car so I could get up and go to the hospital!
Three and a half days of driving later, Kay got us back to Florida
where I hope to have it re attached. So much for biking and seeing
more of the Northeast. Up to the trip, the trip was marvelous.
Even the trip back home was great - Beautiful weather and not as much
traffic as usual.
My thanks again to
Bob (deceased),
Mary,
Tom (deceased)
and the rest of the committee for all the long hours and hard work.
The Reunion was terrific!
June 2008: Just returned from the
baby sitting jaunt. It was a blast because we survived this batch
also. This trip took us to Michigan and North Carolina. Stopped
by to see
Harry Smeal
(deceased) on the way - he is doing well.
We drove and took our bicycles so we were able to log 177 miles on various
bike trails along the way.
May 2008: Baby sitting is our theme
this April and May. We had our daughter and family from California
here to spend an Elder Hostel type week in Arcadia, FL, looking for fossils
(Don't go there - I know who the old fossil is!). Then we spent a week
with our 6 and 8 year old grandchildren in Gig Harbor, Washington.
Next week we drive to Michigan then North Carolina to do a week of baby
sitting for each of our twin guy's families. It's fun spoiling them
then leaving.
November 2007 - Kay and I just
returned from a 3 month, driving (mini-van), tenting (5 X 7 Wal-Mart
special) and cycling (Trek hybrids) tour of the Northwest - Michigan
to Washington, Jasper, Alberta to Southern Utah. We spent a week with
all our kids and grandkids at a reunion at Lake Junaluska, NC, and managed
to see them all again as we traveled. We also celebrated our 50th wedding
anniversary while traveling.
Didn't get chased by buffalo this
year but did have a near-miss with a falling ponderosa pine.
Our conclusion: This is a wonderfully beautiful
country and we need to get out West mire often to see the
billions of stars that are hidden in the East because of
light pollution. We had a solid month of great weather
to enjoy the clear, cool nights.
We
recommend everyone take a long, leisurely trip through the states to
re-capture the thrill of this great country.

May 2007 - Had another bout with heart
stuff. Even though my cholesterol is within proper range (The "good"
high and the "bad" low), my weight is within reason, I eat healthy foods and
ride a bike about 35 miles a week I had to have 2 stents added to my heart
arteries to open up some clogged places from several years ago. These
aren't supposed to be needed if you stay healthy.
Otherwise Kay and I doing well and looking forward to our
every-other-year family reunion this year and a driving tour following right
after it.
We also
hope to attend the MtL 60th in 2008. God doesn't always agree with our
plans but we will do our best. Bill <><
November 2006 - Boy has it been a quiet 4 months! I have not
received a single e-mail from any classmate since August 6th when
Paul Rhodes
(deceased) wrote about his new
beginnings! So I guess I'll start off by saying that since our June
report at the right, Kay and I flew to Walnut Creek, CA, and Gig Harbor, WA,
to see 2 sets of our family. Then 6 days after we returned we drove to
New England to eat leaves and look at the lobsters, I mean look at the
leaves and eat lobster.
From
there we drove to Kalamazoo, MI, to see another son and his family, then to
Kay's 50th college reunion at Franklin College, on through beautiful and
colorful West Virginia to Raleigh, NC, to see our last child and his family.
In all we were able to pedal 185 miles on our bikes an various trail along
the way.
What a
beautiful country we have!
Bill <><
June
2006 - Kay and I took another driving / camping / cycling trip
out West this Spring. We touched bases with our kids in Raleigh and
Kalamazoo, saw Kay's sister in Louisville and had a Kay's
cousin's reunion in WaKeeney, Kansas.
Then we
camped / cycled (Over 200 miles) throughout Colorado / Utah/ Arizona & New
Mexico. We might still be there if it hadn't been for the fires - we
were plagued by them in Arizona and Colorado so we headed home early.
We were
very saddened by the news about
Dave Lucas and
Pat Enlind. It really hits home when the sad news is about a
classmate's spouse's death while on vacation and you are doing the very same
type of activity. Bill

January 2006: News has been light to non-existent the last
couple of months so I'll comment on our Holiday Season - Wow!
We had two of our sons (The twins) and their
families with us over Christmas and it was one of the best ever. It
was interesting to note that their kids still have difficulty knowing at a
glance which guy is their father. Even Angela and Laura
confessed that they don't dare make a snap decision as to who is who when
they view Dave
and Don from the back!
Our Daughter-in-law, Laura, ran the Disney
Half-marathon in January and that was an exciting time also.
November 2005: A note to all that come by here - "I pray that your
Holiday Season will be as warm and blessed as you wish it to be. May
you be able to share your love with all those that have loved you so much
during your lifetime.,"
September 2005:
Kay and I just returned from a 3 months driving tour, visiting our
kids and seeing the US. We took our hybrid bikes with us this time and
clocked over 700 miles each on Rails to Trails trails throughout the
country. We are now known as Buffalo Bill &
Calamity Kay as we had an almost disastrous encounter with some Bison in
Grand Teton National Park! We went biking early in the morning in an
area named Antelope Flats. It was flat but had no antelopes, just a
herd of buffaloes. We waited until they were all on one side of the
road and away from the edge before we started to ride past them. Two
juveniles took exception to us and charged us as we passed. I got
between them and Kay
and she pedaled faster than I've ever seen her go and escaped. They
did not like me and got as close as the edge of the very narrow road before
I let out a primordial scream (Kay did not recognize it as coming
from me) that made them hesitate. When I ran out of breath they
charged again. I was Mr Cool - I shied away from them and fell off my
bike! I screamed again and managed to get back on my bike. By
this time they were on my side of the road but one last, desperate scream
gave me time to burn rubber, and pass Kay. I think Lance
Armstrong would have been hard-pressed to keep up with me! Later
we talked with a Park Ranger and learned:
-
Buffalo
can sustain 30mph for several miles! - Oops, they could have caught us if
they wanted to.
-
Buffalo
have bad eyes and people in bike helmets look like strange buffalos
(Remember the problems VW Beetles had with buffalos years ago?)
-
Always
look at a buffalo's tail:
-
Down -
Happy Buffalo
-
Halfway
between down and horizontal - Not a happy buffalo, something is disturbing
her
-
Horizontal - An unhappy buffalo (Or as we thought, relieving herself)
-
Vertical - You are in serious trouble
-
People in
general are stupid around wild animals:
-
Man was
gored to death 2 days earlier as he photographed one and another one gored
him from the side - He should have taken a picture of her tail first.
-
One
Japanese man actually put his infant son on a buffalo's back and took a
picture of them - tail must have been down.
-
Other
cyclists from the area confirmed the fact that buffaloes don't like helmeted
people on bikes!
What a
beautiful country we live in!
May 2005
- Had a wonder April because we were able to see all our kids (4) and all
our grandchildren (7) within a 3 week time span. The Washington State
group came to Florida to see us and Disney, we drove to Raleigh and saw the
North Carolina and California crews then on to Michigan to see the rest of
them.
Wow, it was beautiful in NC, IN,
OH, MI, PA and VA! After 36 years in Florida you
forget how wonderful Spring is (I don't plan on moving
back, just visiting more often). We took our bikes and
did a few rails-to-trails tours in Pennsylvania and Virginia
- Found out that my bike tires were out of balance when I
went 32MPH on the Skyline Parkway! Don't remember
worrying about that on Sunnyhill Drive when I hit 42mph on
my 800 pound Schwinn, gull-wing in 1948!
We are
now planning a trip to the Yosemite area for our every other year reunion.
We hope to drive out and ride many of the bike trails how available
throughout the country. The Rails to Trails system have slopes that
are our speed (pun intended) - no mountain biking for us.
December
2004 - Kay and I had a healthy year and a great one for travel.
We visited all our grandchildren several times during the year - this is a
difficult task as they live in North Carolina, Michigan, California and
Washington state. We camped in Alaska this Fall, rode the Marine
Highway from Skagway to Seattle, got snowed on in Michigan (To you
Northerners this isn't a big deal but to a Floridian of 36 years it is).
Click my image to see the Cadillac Roadsters I made this spring.
May, 2004: We survived! And so did Grace and Andrew the 4
and 2 year olds. We had a great trip to San Francisco and Gig Harbor
with super weather and no serious problems. I was again reminded why
we have kids when we are young - being with those two for 15 days straight
tells the story.
Kay
and I lived for their nap time and bed time!
Since we have been home we have been riding our bikes along the many bike
trails around Orlando. Great time of the year for this in Florida.
February 2004: Every thing's OK so far! I seem to have
recovered quite well from my Summer by-pass and a torn hamstring I suffered
this last Fall while playing "King of the Sidewalk" with my 11 year-old
granddaughter. Ah youth! Remember when we were young?.
Kay
and I are scheduled to fly to California to see our daughter and her family
then go to Gig Harbor, Washington, to baby-sit our 2 and 4 year-old
grandchildren for a month while their parents take a tour of Italy. We
may never be the same!
December 2003: Just returned from a 3 week excursion to the cold
North on a grandchild safari. We were snowed on in Michigan and South
Carolina. Had Thanksgiving in Raleigh and fulfilled a life-long
ambition - Rode my bicycle on the Blue Ridge Parkway. Great trip.
The victim of an experimental turkey vein heart by-pass
operation
July 2003: "Bud Keen gives
Bill Erdman
a heart attack!"
Bud really wasn't the cause of my quad
by-pass last week but it was a shock when he sent me his biography. I
finished my regular 12 - 15 mile bike ride Thursday morning (10th) and
during the day had all the classic indicators for a pending heart attack.
Enzyme tests showed no heart damage and I passed all of the stress test
except the final scan - oops. Scheduled an angioplasty for Saturday
morning but too blocked for that so the hospital put together a pick-up
tag-team and did a heart quad bypass. Only downer was the
guy that did my leg was from the linen supply department and was used to
sewing mattresses, not legs.
What a week! I'm going to try and write it up for my kids.
When I do I think I'll publish it here although no one but another 72-73
year old will really be interested.
I've been home 2 weeks now and getting around well.
Only thing I need to add at this time is that ancient adage: "If you
want to make God laugh, plan something." I laugh at my previous
comments about the reunion and driving to Alaska and hear uproarious
laughter in the background. What's great is that I feel good about the
whole deal and have no feeling of loss except for the scars on my curvaceous left leg.
I will miss seeing you guys at the reunion, however.
June 2003: I heartily recommend family reunions! We had a
wonderful week at Myrtle Beach, SC. All 17 of our immediate family
attended and were still speaking with each other at the end of the week!
The weather could have been less rainy but we survived cabin fever without
any losses.
Our planned driving trip to Alaska is coming together and as it stands now
we will leave from the 55th reunion and head West. Anyone want to come
along? Bill
<><
May 2003 -
Made it through the West Coast trip and tax time in good health and spirit.
We are on a trip through North Carolina and Michigan seeing other kids and
grandkids (Advantage / disadvantage of having 4 kids spread out around the
country). We are looking forward to our second every-other-year family
reunion this June and the MtL 55th reunion in August. We are seriously
considering driving to Alaska after the reunion via the Alaska Highway with
a return on the inter-coastal ferry to Seattle then San Francisco to see our
West Coast kids and grandkids again. We'll see what God has in mind.
March 2003
- Kay and I were able to get our grandchildren fix early this year by flying
to Gig Harbor, Washington, and Walnut Creek, California. We saw 4 out
of 7 but were glad to get back home and get warm. It was cold and
raining both places and you non-Floridians don't turn the heat up during the
winter!
Looking forward to the 55th reunion so I can gather some more information
for all the blank spaces on this web. My thanks to
Bob Woeber (deceased) for all his efforts in making the 55th possible.
October,
2002
- A fabulous trip of 2 1/2 months and 9,000+ miles. Unfortunately we
saw very few leaves of color. However, the lobsters in Maine at the
roadside "joints" were wonderful. Funniest event was a "sick" crow in
Indianapolis that had people worried about West Nile Virus. It turned
out to be a stuffed one that the kids would move every 20 to 30 minutes!
CDC wasn't amused!
Too many other great highlights to mentioned except that
Kay
and I celebrated our 45th wedding anniversary as we traveled.
September, 2002
-
Kay
& I are in Holland, Michigan, on our way North to Sault Ste Marie, Canada.
We have been visiting kids & grandkids and now plan to drive to the Gaspé
Peninsula and back through the Maritime Provinces and New England to
Florida. We hope to follow the changing leaves of Autumn and not the
changing snow of Winter.
December 2001: Kay & I just returned after a 3 months driving tour
of the US as we visited each of our 4 kids & families (NC, MO, WA & CA).
We were on hand for the birth of our 7th grandchild in Gig Harbor,
Washington, and visited quite a few relatives on the way. We had a
mini-lease with Avis & started out with a 2002 Buick with 24 miles on it -
turned it in with 16,558 miles! Beats putting the wear and tear on our
own car.
We were crossing Kansas on September 11th and watched the nation change
every day thereafter. So many American flags it was hard to find Post
Offices - usually only building in the county with a flag. Going in
and out of Canada was an adventure each time.
Visited the Oklahoma City Memorial on the way back and would have you add it
to your "must see" list. In light of the Trade Center attack it is
even more poignant than before.
.Tried to see
Julian Taber
(deceased)
in Washington but was unable to connect up with
him. Sounded good on the phone however.
We're trying to recover in time for CHRISTmas but it is slow going - Did you
ever come home to a 3 month's pile of mail under your front door mail slot?
It isn't a pretty sight. Bill
<><
June 8th, 2001 -
It's been a slow travel year thus far for Kay & I. We went to Seattle,
San Francisco and Raleigh at various times this Spring to see children &
grandchildren.
We are busy planning our first family reunion for this July and expect 16
1/2 immediate family members plus uncounted cousins & in-laws to attend.
After that we are planning another 9 to 10 week drive out West beginning in
late August. We hope to be in the Seattle area when our 7th grandchild
debuts. However we know from experience that the easiest way to made
God laugh is to plan something so we will wait and see.
Health wise we are doing well. My eyes have stabilized enough that I
can do limited driving on the open road and this helps on long trips.
In town I ride a bicycle most of the time.
Again, one of the highlights of life has been the opportunity to author this
web site. It is only disappointing that I don't hear from more people
but when I do the high lasts for a long time. I find it refreshing to
realize that all you people out there have aged right along with me.
Those that do write are special folks in my life regardless of our
relationship in high school - we are so much smarter now! It's nice to
hear from people that tell me more about themselves now than I ever cared to
know in the 50s. We are a vanishing breed and need to reach out and
touch before it is too late. Gee, I sound just like an old curmudgeon!
Well maybe I am but I like to hear from you anyway. Bill
<><
December, 2000 -
We had a great trip to Germany to see our son, then Turkey on a Rick Steves
Backpacking Tour and home via the Greek Isles. The tour was our first
organized tour and I must say that Rick Steves knows how to plan and
organize a great cultural experience. I would recommend his tours to
anyone in reasonable physical shape.
Bill

July, 2000 -
Kay & I spent 3 weeks in Ireland, including Belfast. Now I know why
they can't get along! It's "In-Your-Face" day in and day out - The
Protestants paint their curbs red, white & blue to let you know they live
there. They insist on marching everywhere they aren't welcome.
The Catholics paint their houses with bright color murals (See below)
showing every event that has happened to them in the last 150 years.
You can't get away from the memories.
The best weather vane of our location in Northern Ireland was our Catholic
driver. If he was smiling & singing we were in Catholic Northern
Ireland. When he was cussing the traffic lights, frowning & nervous as
a cat we were in Protestant Northern Ireland.
Here is a "Peace" walls dividing the two districts in Belfast -
.
In Derry
and Belfast, houses have murals reminding everyone of past confrontations.
There
are 3,000 Protestants in Derry and 6,000 British troops to protect them.
"Hello?" Something doesn't add up here! British
surveillance towers and jails are obvious . (Click on images to
enlarge them)
We walked the streets of Belfast at night without feeling apprehensive and
even went through the Sinn Fein bookstore without feeling nervous. We
were the only Protestants on the 22 passenger tour bus and never felt
concerned for our safety, however it was great to get back to the Irish
Republic!
In September we are celebrating my big "Seven Oh" by going on a Rick Steve's
backpacking tour of Turkey. We are going via Dusseldorf, Germany, to
see our son and returning via Greece to see it also
That's us to date. How about hearing from you?

God is good. This I know because 1 month after I retired in 1995 I was
told by a specialist, after several attempts to fixed my detached retina,
that I was "legally blind" and would never drive, use a computer, read or do
woodworking. He suggested I apply for a Guide Dog.
He was an excellent surgeon but underestimated the power of prayer.
It is obvious I can use a computer. I can read most everything.
I have finished several involved woodworking and lathe projects. I
drive when there isn't much traffic. I have been able to go to the
Tennessee Mountains on a mission trips to build houses for the needy.
My eyes have gotten as good as they will get but they are good enough.
The "miracle" vision lasted until the Summer of 2014 when I lost more of the
central vision. God is still Good, this I know.

Reunion
August 2008
- I am alive and well. Sorry to miss the
reunion. Has it really been 60 years? Impossible! I am
alive and well and enjoying life. Just got back from a
trip to the UK. Have lived in CA for the last 6 yrs. and
love it. Graduated Muskingum College '52, Master of
Theological Studies from Drew Seminary '87.
Married 55
years to Rev. Wm. R Harvey, (Presbyterian, USA.) Bill
was ordained as a minister in the Presbyterian USA church in
'55, retired now. Had 3 sons and one daughter who continue
to amaze me. Even more amazing are our seven
grandchildren. With an African American daughter-in-law and
Indian ex-son-in-law we have a multi-culture family; a
vision of the future. Besides PA and CA, we've lived in FL
(Lynn Haven), NY (Horseheads), MD (Severna Park), NJ
(Plainfield, Brigantine), and New Zealand (Auckland area).
Would love to
hear from anyone who remembers me. By the way--the name is
LYNN! I never used Marilyn in those days.
Even now I only use it on business papers. -

January 2011 - Since the last reunion, which was
wonderful, nothing much has changed in my life. I am very
content to stay home. I have made some great new friends,
in the condo development I moved to after my husband died.
I go to lots of basketball and baseball games.
I have
two young grandsons, 8 & 11 born to my youngest daughter who
turned 40 yesterday, the other 5 grandchildren are 19 to
29. I would love to be a great grandmother, but they are

The DBC
friends have missed a couple of years getting together but
we are still trying, maybe 2011. It is not because we are
getting older it's because everyone seems to be too busy.
We had a
beautiful snow storm yesterday, and it brings back so many
wonderful growing up years in Mt. Lebanon. I can't believe
my Mother let me do it, but we had our flexible flyer sleds,
and we would start at the top of Jefferson Drive shoot down
the middle of the street going so fast we went all the way
up Orchard Drive. I remember I would come into the garage
my mother brushed the snowballs of my WOOL snowsuit, gave me
dry mittens and I'd go out another 4 hours. The group
included

Brad Estep

Chuck
Coltman. I didn't live near too many girls

Joie Peck (deceased)
moved in later , but I think we were passed the flexible
flyer days. All my friends here think I'm crazy because I
like snow and cold.
Part of
my family are HUGE Steelers fans, including me, and the
other part are Eagles fans (too bad), so I will think of all
my Mt Lebanon classmates on Super Bowl Sunday and hope you
are all routing for the Steelers. I hope some more of our
'48ers start writing news again in 2011. -
WebMaster - Amen!
Dear

Thank you so much for your E-mail. The pictures of your
family are beautiful. I can certainly relate to your love
of Kay and children and grandchildren. I wish I
had more news of classmates, but I don't at this time. I'm
sure you are having a great summer as it seems you and
Kay are always on the go. I’m going to Ocean City, NJ,
in August(. I'm spending a week or so with my college
roommate and her whole family and then some time at my
daughters place in O.C.. That is about as exciting as it
gets, but I love every minute of the time spent in O.C.
I sent my checks so I guess I'm all set for the reunion.
See you and Kay in August, I’m looking forward to
meeting her as she sounds like happy and fun person.

to keep a guy busy who never had time to take up golf, fishing or other
lifetime pursuits other than reading (which is all I ever did at work
anyhow). Unfortunately, she has her hands full now nursing my daughter and
former law clerk, Mary, who is miraculously recovering from a massive
heart attack necessitating a triple by-pass. What a way to spend her (Mary's,
not Katy’s) 52nd birthday today.
But, the God we used to say
the Lord's Prayer to every day in homeroom some 60 odd years ago is still with
us today answering our prayers and blessing Mary, as well as our four
other children and seven grandchildren with a happy life. Don’t hesitate to ask
for His help. WE look forward to seeing all of you in2013. – December 2011
September 2008: You did a great job at the reunion and it was much
appreciated by Katy and me. What a happy time it is when you see old
friends after a long time.
I had
intended to thank you before now, but I have been in court and it ain't like
it used to be. Now, I get tired at the end of the day.
Thank
you, again, for a great week-end. God bless you.

July 2008: After college at W&J and
the Army in Korea and Japan, I went to Pitt Law school, met a Mt. Lebanon
girl, Katy Keller (Seton Hill H.S.'55), married her fifty years ago
and have a beautiful family of three daughters, two sons, four grandsons and
three granddaughters.
Serving as Chairman of the Allegeny County Commissioners was exciting, but
it doesn't put five kids through Duke, Boston College, University of
Alabama, John Carroll, W&J and Duquesne Law School, so back to practicing
law which was enjoyable, at times, but I couldn't afford to retire at
sixty-five. Thus, I ran for statewide appellate judge and one million one
hundred ten thousand votes later fulfilled my legal dream, thanks to Katy
and the children who did all the work, especially my lawyer sons and
daughter.
Michael and
Mary kept the law firm going while Mark, who is now the twice
elected Allegeny County Controller, was my campaign manager despite his
spendthrift ways of running litter free environmental friendly campaigns -
no billboards, no signs, no handout cards, no TV, no money (well,
practically very little) - a few radio blurbs locally; our colors were black
and white because the only printed matter we had was from the copy
machine with only a $15,000 Primary budget and a $25,000 General election
Budget. My General election opponent alone spent over $500,000. In the
most recent election of statewide judges, the winners each spent over $2
Million.
I have
been politically neutered for the last twelve and a half years and am now
wondering where to work when I am forced to stop as a senior judge as I will
reach the Pennsylvania judicial barrier of eighty. Fortunately, thanks to
a successful jaw and neck cancer operation, chemo and radiation two years
ago, I am now able to ponder what kind of work I will do at that time as
Katy and I have been blessed for the last five years with the
opportunity to live with my daughter and raise her three really wonderful
grandsons, ages 8, 11 and 13.

I plan to attend our 65th Reunion - I'll
be there with bells on! - April 2013
Hi,
Bill, This is a new
e-mail address. Still live at 2113 NE 15th Ave., Ft.
Lauderdale, FL 33305. Last year I had a wonderful 80th
Birthday on July 26th. I told my children I was planning my
own party and I made my own "horsey" invitations and took family and
friends to Caulder Racetrack for a fabulous day at the races.
I decorated red jockey caps for everyone, we had dinner and horsey
favors, etc. Caulder even named the 6th race after me -
"Fleming's 80th Birthday Classic". No one had
ever been to the races before so they bet a little, won some
money and we all had lots of fun. By the way I've used my
middle name, "Fleming", for the past 30 years. (An art
teacher suggested it.) Hope all is well with you and your
family, Regards, Fleming (Nancy) - September 2011 - (Since this web site
doesn’t publish e-mail addresses, you can get it by contacting
me.)
July 2010: I'm still alive and in good health, so to
speak. Just had my 80th birthday and took my kids and
grandkids and some friends to the racetrack for a day of fun.
Even had a race, #9, name for me - "Fleming's 80th Birthday
Classic." It was loads of fun and I even won some money.
If I can figure out how to send a picture, I will.
June 2010: I have a new e-mail address - Email
Bill and he will forward it
to you. Not much new. Working part-time because of the
lousy economy. Hot as hell here in Ft. Lauderdale. They
say the heat is hard on old people and I'm one of them (but I'm not
old!). Still hanging in there and spry and ornery as ever.
Four children and four grandkids happy and healthy but having a
tough time with this economy. My daughter, Lynde, asked
me what I wanted to do for my 80th birthday and I told her I wanted
to go to Caulder Race Track and watch the horses run. I'm a big fan
of the "ponies". Hope to make the 65th reunion. Best
Wishes to all. Nancy
February 2007:
Jeanne Vayda
(deceased) says to send updates so I
am doing so. Life is normal, health is ok (usual aches and
pains and stomach problems.) Just got back from Puerto
Vallarta, Mexico where I spent two weeks with an art group I
sometimes travel with (Flying Colors Art Workshops). The
first week I took a course in Photoshop CS2 and the woman artist,
Linda Doll, who taught it was the most fabulous computer expert I
have ever seen. She knew everything about Macs or PCs and I
learned a lot about how to manipulate Photoshop and have it do all
kinds of "arty" things. (I shall send you a picture of my
head on Heidi Klum's body!) It should have been a two week course
as there was still more to learn. The second week was with a
Water Color instructor, Frank Webb, and that was also very
informative. However, the only time I paint is when I take a
course as I never seem to have time to do it at home. I
volunteer at one of the hospitals here in Ft. Lauderdale, and I run
the Gift Shop there plus substitute teach at Ft. L. High School
and of course my four children and four grandchildren keep me
busy too.
I am really looking forward to our next reunion (I refuse to say 60th) as I
enjoy seeing all those old friends and hopefully I will have more time to
talk to everyone. I ran out of time at the 50th and didn't get around
to at least speaking a few words to all. I don't know what I can do
to help, but I will help if needed. Maybe
Buddy can think of something for me to do. That's all for
now, Ciao, Nancy

June 2006 - So
sorry to hear the news of
Dave Lucas' death. I
dated him in high school and always considered him a super nice guy.
Good looking too. I'm sure he will be sadly missed.
Not much from me.
Still alive and kicking. I am busy volunteering at one of our
hospitals ( I run the gift shop) and fixing up my home and yard. I
like to work in the yard in the evening. It's too hot in the day.
Don't seem to find
time for my art anymore unless I go on a painting tour. Hope to do
that next year to Italy and Mexico.
Children and
grandkids are all doing well, thank goodness. I have the usual aches
and pains but I just ignore them. As my Aunt Clara used to say,
"Old age is hell."
Time is passing by so
fast; I never seem to get the
things done that I want too. Glad that you and your family are in good
health. See you at our next reunion. "Fleming"
October 2005:
The first week of September the annual "DBC" reunion was held at my home in
Lake Barrington, IL, a suburb of Chicago. It was five days of talking and
eating. We spent two days in Chicago seeing the sights including the new
Millennium Park (which is great fun and like no other park), the
Architectural Boat Tour on the Chicago River (a must do) and a night on the
town. We told everyone that would listen who we were and that we had
graduated from Mt. Lebanon High School in 1948. We hope "they" were
impressed!
The

little worse for the wear. Not bad, considering! Seated: (L to R)

2005 - Hi, Bill! I have some
sad news to report.
Grant Johnson died
on July 12th. at a hospital in West Palm Beach, Florida. He was 75
years old and lived in Ft. Lauderdale with his second wife.
He was a
real estate appraiser in Broward County, but retired for many years. He was
previously married to Nancy Godden for 25 years and they have
4 children - Lee Alden Johnson (boy),
Lane Christine Johnson (girl), Lynde Sue Johnson Voet, and
Tia Paige Johnson Fabiszewski. They have 4 grandchildren.
I am
fine and still living in Ft. Lauderdale with my children and grandchildren
close by. In September, I will be meeting my old high school
friends, the DBC "gang" in Chicago for our annual reunion.
Unfortunately, not all of us are able to meet each year and we've lost a few
dear ones along the way, but there are usually 9 or 10 of us. This
year our hostess is
Ann Pritchard
(deceased), and the rest of the group will be
Suzanne Divine,
Ann Mosites, Ann
Bowman,
Jeanne Vayda
(deceased) McCallum,
Mitzie Fantl,
Peggy Crissman,
Mary Murrie and of course "moi". I have
some old pictures to send you but I will have to send them by "snail mail"
because I haven't learned the scanner yet. My best to you and
your family,

July 2003: Hi everyone! New e-mail address. Sorry I
won't be at the 55th reunion . I had a ball at our 50th and I will
miss seeing everyone. However, I am going to Russia the first week in
September so I can't do both. I will be taking the "Imperial Russian
Waterways" cruise. A 14-day river cruise tour from St. Petersburg to
Moscow with 13 tours & cultural connections such as the Hermitage museum,
the Moscow circus, the Bolshoi Ballet, and many towns along the way. I
have been wanting to take this trip for a long time and so I am going!!!
I'll send a picture when I get back. Have a wonderful time at reunion
and I'll definitely be at the 60th.

October, 2002: Hi
Bill
&
Bob! I wasn't lost. I just didn't have a working computer
for a long time, but now it's fixed and I'm back on line. I
moved back to Ft. Lauderdale in November 1999 when I sold my Bed &
Breakfast, The Duck Farm Inn, in Urbanna, VA; on the Rappahannock River in
the Chesapeake Bay area.
My 4 children (son,
Lee; daughters,
Lane,
Lynde
and
Tia) and my 4 grandchildren (Tyler,
Sydney
(girl),
Madison
(girl) and
Ashley) all live here so now we're close. I'm not working
but always busy (the creativity never stops).
I volunteer at a local hospital, managing the gift shop for the Auxiliary
and helping my daughters with their preschool when asked. Used
to travel, but haven't done any lately (stock market, you know!)
Would like to take that China trip with Carnegie Mellon Alumni this May
(anyone want to come?) I had such a good time at the last reunion
(didn't have time to talk to everyone) that I'm looking forward to the next
one - 2003, right?
I'm meeting some of my girlfriends from Mt. Lebanon (Suzanne,
etc.) this November for our 3rd annual reunion. We started this after
the 50th. Lots of fun. Best Wishes and Happy Holidays to
All. Fleming (Nancy)
P.S. Been using Fleming for the past 25 years, since my art

Nancy writes:, my husband,
Harry, passed away January 20, 2013. His funeral was
on his 91st birthday, May 3rd. His service was held in Igo,
CA, at the Veteran's Cemetery with full military honors.
Harry was a World War II Dive Bomber Pilot and received
the Distinguished Flying cross. He had flown over 40
missions. After the war he became a Pilot for Northwest
Airlines which was where I met him. We had been married 57
wonderful years. Right now I am torn as to whether I will
be attending the 65th Reunion. However, I will keep in
touch. Nancy - May 2013
We have decided not to attend.
Redding is very difficult to fly out of. I have to
drive to Sacramento, which is a three hour drive, and then
fly to Pittsburgh from there. So, I thank you again
but I think I shall decline. Nancy – July
2008.
It is getting close to the 60th
Reunion which you have me on the list as attending, but at
this date I am not certain, Do you have a motel /
hotel secured where us out-of-towners can stay which is
close to South Hill Country Club? We will be flying in
and will not have transportation. I have not received
any information from you on the reunion. I know you
have my email address so please send the information.
To bring you up-to-date on our
family, we celebrated our 50th Anniversary in 2006 with all
the family coming to Redding. My sister, Pat
also came with her daughter. There were our three children,
spouses and 7 grandchildren. After that Harry,
my husband and I went on a month long cruise to South
America on the Queen Mary 2. Last summer we went to
Alaska on a 7 day cruise. Redding is a wonderful place
to live although very hot summers but mild winters.
Two of our children still live in Seattle area and the
oldest son and family now live in Redding . Our
first grandson graduated from High School last year and is
currently working for a subsidiary of Boeing in Seattle.
The second grandson (Redding) graduates this June and has
been accepted at Ca. San Diego. He will be receiving
several scholarships.
We hope to be able to attend the
60th but it will depend on my husband's health. March
30th 2008 - (Posted late because
WebMaster missed the email.)
I am not sure I will be attending
the Reunion as my husband is dragging his feet.
He has never attended with me and I think it is time.
It is a long trip for us and air travel is not fun. I
will decide in plenty of time. Actually since it is
usually about 115 degrees in August in Redding, it will
probably be cooler back in Mt. Lebanon. We have just
returned from spending a month in Phoenix, AZ playing golf
and going to Spring Training Baseball games. My health
is still good but my hubby is slowing down. That's
what I get for marrying an older man 52 years ago.
When I get organized here again I plan so forward some
pictures of our super large family. Hope to see everyone in
August. March 12, 2008 - (Posted late because
WebMaster missed the email.)
Been very busy. After the
South America Cruise in January (26 days), we took a cruise
to Alaska followed by a Retired Northwest pilots reunion in
Reno. I also was finally accepted into the DAR
(Daughters of the American Revolution) after working on the
research for almost two years. My Pilot husband is
fine and so is ex-stew Nancy. We have three
children, two in Seattle and one in Redding. Then we
also have five grandchildren in Seattle and two in Redding.
My sister Patricia Gregory Jones (class of 57) lost
her husband Donald Jones two years ago and went to
her 50th reunion a month ago and is now dating one of the
graduates in her class. Guess they dated in high
school. Very happy for her. Hope to see all at
the 60th next year. – Oct 2007 (Posted late because

Maryan Hall (Mershon)
Pat wrote from Hot Springs
Village, AR,: Thank you for all of your years of work for our class. Never got
to a reunion. Always lived too far away! Best wishes to the remaining class
members. - Pat, November 2018

Physical Therapy isn't too painful. Have had both knee's replaced many years
ago & my feeling is that if I ever have to go thru that again, I'll jump off of
a bridge--my best friend said she'd go with me & if I chicken out; she'll
shove!!!😱
Not too much news here. I'm
going to Prague for 2 months in Sept. Don't know if I'll stay with the kids or
have an apartment as I have done before. Hoping to go to Vienna again while
there. My arthritis is gradually getting worse; so world is getting smaller &
smaller.
Trying to work on the STEM*
Program for AAUW**; but hard to get started in Arkansas. Lunch with the Red
Hats is always fun & the Book Clubs keep my mind busy. Take Care, Pat -
July 2016
NOTE:
*STEM is
a curriculum based on the idea of educating students in four specific
disciplines — science, technology, engineering and mathematics — in an
interdisciplinary and applied approach. **AAUW -

philanthropy, and research
Hope
you & Kay are
doing well. My traveling days are limited, but went to New Orleans last Fall &
visited with oldest son & stuffed on seafood. Went flat boating on the southern
canals & bayous--fun.
I'm
still in AR; tho' am discouraged about all the weather changes. Might as well
have stayed in Denver!!! My kids live far away, but I'm still able to travel &
visit. Houston, New Orleans, Denver, & the youngest is still in Prague, Czech
Republic. Am going to see James, in New O. this May--more seafood & boating!
Then to Prague for Thomas & family & annual Winefest in Germany.
Not so
many organizations or Book Clubs due to worsening arthritis; but do manage to
get around & have fun. Best wishes to all.
Thanx,

Pat writes: I'm busy
here in Arkansas with AAUW, book clubs, etc. Arkansas looks a lot like PA.
Went to Prague, CZ, last summer to visit with my youngest son, Thomas, &
his family. The grandchildren are growing & improving their English each time I
visit. We are going to Omaha in Sept. for my oldest grandson's wedding.
I won't be able to come to
the reunion, as I' be at my daughter's in Houston trying to find a dress for the
wedding.
My health is all right,
except for chronic arthritis--which is normal, for an old woman! Enjoy the
reunion, y'all. – February 2013

is still active - he replied to my general email and said, “Good to
hear from you! Will see you on Zoom!" - August 2022.
He also wrote later: I'm a great-grandparent as of July 22nd
this year. I won't be traveling to any reunions as I'm in a
wheelchair and pretty immobile. I can use a walker for a very short
distance but can't get in and out of the car so I'm at home other
than for doctor appointments. Still it's better than when I
was in the slammer (care facility) for rehab. Kathy and I
still enjoy St Augustine. I feel pretty good and enjoy working
jigsaw puzzles, watching TV, reading and eating. See you all on
Zoom!
We were so sorry to
hear about
Bob. We really appreciate your letting us know.
Do you have an address where we could send a card? Thanks again.
Neil and Kathy - January 2018
Kathy & I are still in St. Augustine and had to evacuate for
hurricanes Matthew and Irma. We were fortunate to return to
branches and debris to clean up but no damage.
My son,
Doug, is a PHD and professor at University of Iowa. He and his wife,
Julie live in Iowa City with their 11 yr old Ella and 10 yr old
Neil, both in grade school. My son, Gregg, is a welder with HG
Griffin currently working in Alabama.
Kathy's son, Gregg, is a retired AF Col teaching ROTC and living in
Fernandina Beach with his wife, Debby. Their son, Tom, is in
Tallahassee with his wife, Alexandria, and son Jon just started AF
pilot training in Texas. Kathy's son, Doug and his wife,
Siobhan, retired as LT COL and live in Peoria, AZ, where he now flies for
Delta Air Lines. They have three children, Tyler (at Villanova),
Micaela 13, and Keira 11.
We
are still playing bridge, going on day trips around the area and try to see our
kids and grandkids whenever we can! - November 2017

Tom (deceased), May 2008: Apparently
John L. now goes by Jack. His wife Barbara is
also listed. They have lived there a long time as this is the
same address as in our 25 year reunion brochure in 1973.
I think I've located
John Humphreys in Atlanta. Using Google I've found a Dr. John L.
Humphreys there. Our John was the son of a
physician and this
John is listed as an opthamologist, having graduated from the Med
School at the U. of Pittsburgh 52 years ago. That sounds about the right
vintage. Address is 2255 Shasta Way Northeast, Atlanta, GA 30345.
