Peg, called us yesterday to inform us that Jerry

November 2011 - Hi All. Still kicking but not hard
enough to make the 65th reunion! My wife continues to be
the light of my life after 58 years of marriage. Peace to
you all. Jerry Goddard, Newmarket, New Hampshire
February 2007: All is well here, just a little
older which brings on some expected difficulties. This is
the first year since 1964 that I haven't done some good
skiing. But there is always next year. Our group grows
smaller, but I hope to be with you at the 60th next year.
I
again this spring will be doing an overseas ministry, if you can call St.
John, US, VI overseas.
I
hope you are well. Peace, Jerry
December
2004: A Holiday Greetings from the Goddards!
“The sun is shining, the grass is green ….”
Remember the verse from that favorite holiday song, “White Christmas”?
It’s about as old as we are! Well, here we are in New England in early
December, usually the time for
Jerry’s first foray onto the slopes, and the temperature is in the high
50’s. We’re still dreaming of a white Christmas while we plant bulbs
in the still soft warm earth, and the robins linger longer.
We can
feel and see the changing patterns on our planet, both in the environment
and among people, and we are concerned. Can we set aside all the
worldly woes at this holiday season and glory in the beauty of the candles
and carols, the garlands and guests, the magic of the Magi? How can we
turn our backs on war and suffering neighbors around the world? I
wonder what Jesus or Buddha, Mohammed or Moses would be doing if they walked
the streets of the earth today. What would be their message to this
troubled world?
We need
no more deaths or martyrs. We need truly compassionate, wise and
visionary leaders. Do we dare hope for such a gift? But this is
Christmas and we can dream of things far more weighty, intricate and
beautiful than a snowflake. Let’s dream of that day of peace on earth
with the blessings of freedom and justice for all humankind.
We’ve
had another eventful year. We’ve been so fortunate to have these great
opportunities for interim ministries in fascinating parts of the world and
making wonderful new friends. We spent almost 3 months last spring in
that fascinating “down under” country of Australia. We were in
Adelaide on the southern coast of South Australia which they claim to be the
only state not settled as a penal colony, and they are quietly boastful of
this fact. I’m not sure if we were more enthralled by the stately
white trunked eucalyptus trees or the koala bears which clung high in their
branches.
We
visited Ayers Rock, now going by its Aboriginal name, Uluru, the gigantic
monolithic rock that looms in the middle of the dessert and dramatically
changes color from orange to deep red as the sun sets and to purple in the
rain! It’s quite a spiritual place for the Aborigines.
We too
found the surrounding area where streams reflected the stately ghost gums
silhouetted against the red rock to be a truly awesome place. We leave
in February for St. John in the U.S. Virgin Islands for a 10-week interim
ministry. Now that’s hard to take!!
Lots of
changes in our family, and all very exciting news.
Jan, our youngest daughter at 45 is pregnant with their first child and
we all are overwhelmed with excitement! Linda is helping her
husband begin a new solo medical practice. Spencer is a
geriatrician and Linda
will work with him in counseling the aged. Kirk has found his
niche in the construction business, and is working as a supervisor in a
large company in Portland, Me. remodeling churches and commercial buildings.
All the grandkids are great, one in college, one about to enter, and 2 more
not far behind. We do love living close to them all. They’ll be
joining us on St. John for a few weeks’ escape from the New England winter.
Snorkels for Christmas!
Please
join us as we celebrate new birth - of light, of peace, of freedom, and of
babies born everywhere into a world of love and hope - for was this not the
message of Jesus?
We wish
you all a very happy holiday season and a healthy new year. Peg
and Jerry Goddard -

December 2003: Happy New Year
Bill. I hope you are well as we enter the new year.
We are well and have had a very good year. We spent three months as
interim minister at a beautiful old Unitarian church in Hampstead, London.
Had our 50th
wedding anniversary,
Peg's 50th collage reunion, and my 50th Artillery OCS reunion.
A good down hill ski season has begun and we will be off to Adelaide,
Australia ,for the months of March, April and May to do another interim
ministry. It will be late summer and early fall there so we hope to
use some of there many beaches, do some kayaking and explore some of the
outback.
Bill, we have lived at 220 Cushing
Rd., Newmarket, New Hampshire since 1999 so maybe the address should be
changed ? (Done)
Stay well and have a good year.
Peace, Jerry Goddard
Unknown date: Minister Emeritus, Unitarian Universalist Fellowship
I've been offered another exciting interim ministry position in Cape Town,
South Africa for late February. 1999. We'll be there about 4 months.
I continue to teach courses on Islam & the great monotheistic religions
since my sabbatical in the Middle East 3 years ago.
I am happy to say that wife Peg has been a good & faithful guide over the
past 45 years. Where would men be without these strong, resourceful
women?
Last year we had a wonderful vacation in Scotland & Ireland.
Can't forget our family reunion in New Hampshire either.
Our families are growing & thriving in Boston & Freeport, Maine.
We have 3 granddaughters and 1 grandson.
(This was gleaned from their Christmas letter)
Note of August 1999: Dear
Bill,
Peg
and I returned from South Africa in mid July having completed an interim
ministry at The Free Protestant Unitarian Church of Cape Town.
Cape Town is a beautiful city in a country recovering from 40 years of
apartheid fascism. A wonderful experience. We have been busy
since returning as we moved into a new condo over looking the water at 220
Cushing Rd., Newmarket, New Hampshire, 03857.
Retiring in N.H. puts us close to all 3 of our children and their families.
I will be active with Planned Parenthood and hope to teach and do another
overseas ministry.
Jerry Goddard
PS, Bill, this is my second note tonight - don't have a heart
attack. I received an Activities Key in our junior year so I
guess that's the reason it didn't make the yearbook. No big deal, but
I keep seeing "Activities Key" mentioned other
places every time I look at the website so I'm appealing for restitution, 51
years later. Peace,
Jerry Goddard
Christmas, 1999: Happy Holidays To All Our Dear Friends!
As we gather around us the boughs and bows, lights
and poinsettias, and all the symbols of the season which bring us a feeling
of warmth and love, we look back over our past year and ponder the events
which also brought us "comfort and joy" and challenge. '99 has been
another year of change and "news" as we moved from New York to New Zealand
to new South Africa and Finally to Newmarket, New Hampshire!
It began when Jerry had an opportunity to do another interim ministry, this
time in Cape Town. So in February off we went en circuitous route to
South Africa by way of Auckland, NZ, visiting the church and friends with
whom we spent 5 wonderful months last year. After a stop in Austrailia
where we snorkeled on the Great Barrier Reef, we landed in SA where Jan
joined us on a safari in Kruger Nat'l Park for a never to be forgotten and
one might say religious experience. What a thrill to see the elusive
leopard draped in a tree; during a night drive to spy on a lion courtship
(as only a coy feline can perform!); to encounter another 2 lazy. engorged
males who moved in after the lioness had made the kill (served the dinner?!)
to guard the downed and devoured giraffe; to watch the sun set as it
silhouetted the skeleton of a vulture perched tree, to see 3 hippos lazily
snoozing with only eyes and nostrils breaching the water, while a sharp eyed
crocodile facing upstream tensely braced with enormous mouth agape waiting
for an easy catch; and being nose to nose with baboons (through glass!) as
they hitched a ride on our car with their babes clutched to their
underbellies. And oh, the elephants! These great beasts who so
lovingly guarded their young as they stopped to challenge us with huge ears
flapping. The wonders, wildness and wisdom of Africa!!
Then on we went to Cape Town where we lived for 3
1/2 months at the foot of majestic - Table Mountain which rises from the sea
and wraps protectively around the city. The moist Atlantic air rising
over the mountain brings a cloud which drapes like a table cloth over its
rim until the ceaseless "nurse winds" howl for days and lift the cloth.
Such a mystical sight! This is a very spiritual mountain for many who
live here, and one can easily capture the reverence surrounding it. If
only the stability of the mountain prevailed on the political scene.
As South Africa goes through transition from apartheid to democracy and as
the balance of power between the races is adjusting, there is an enormous
challenge to all. It is such a complex society and now with its new
president, Mbeki, who was elected while we were there, watchful waiting and
unrest mix with hope for the future of the new SA. There is violence
engulfing the city as the blacks and coloreds claim "historical justice"; as
the Township's jobless and homeless claim their rightful freedoms and move
into the city and suburban parks, and those more fortunate people add higher
walls, locks and electric wires. There are such conflicting emotions
of fear and compassion which we felt strongly during our stay. But
there is also a very strong sense of hope for a peaceful resolution among
most of the South Africans we met. We grew to love and respect the
people of this vastly diverse and beautiful country where gardens bloom in
absolute glory in one of the world's richest botanic regions. We
cherish the time we went and formed friendships which we treasure.
There is a quiet, gentle with the wonderful people of the Unitarian church
there, a gentile strength among the among the folks in SA, perhaps supported
by that magical mountain, and a determination to continue in the path set by
their great leader and role model, Nelson Mandela. Change is in the
wind. We pray for it to be peaceful.
We too have been in transition since our return in July. We moved into
our new condo which we bought hastily 2 weeks prior to our African sojourn.
Our new home in New Hampshire is west of Portsmouth on Great Bay, a
bio-diverse estuary alive with herons, osprey, eagles, and not 7 but 37
swans a'swimming!! It is a gloriously peaceful and beautiful spot
making retirement all the more delightful. Sharing space 24 hours a
day is taking some adjusting, however! We're just an hour's drive from
all our kids and grandkids who become more treasured to us as we and they
all grow older. (Yes, older! I went to my 50"' high school reunion
this summer!) It's great to be more a part of their concerts and
sports and lives.
Yes, life for us has been blessed. We realize just how fortunate we are as
we spend time in developing countries and see how difficult life is for so
many. Perhaps as we enter this new century we can use our great
prosperity as individuals and as a nation to lift our hands and hearts to
injustice and poverty. It can be an amazing 21' century for all the
world's children.
.And that's the news from Newmarket! Merry Christmas. Happy New Year and New
Century! Peg
and Jerry

Jerry's Biography - August 2003:
Bill, I am truly sorry that you will not
be at the reunion, but I do hope you are on the mend. Please take care
of yourself. We will miss you.
Here is an outline of my last 55 years that you can add to my page.
I graduated from Denison University in '52 and it was there that I met the
love of my life, Peg.
Dave Miller
(deceased)
and I joined the army together after graduating from
college, and I went on to OCS. After graduating from OCS I married
Peg and went off to be an artillery officer at Fort Lewis, Washington,
where our first child was born.
In 1955 I joined Alcoa where I worked for 17 years, had two more children
and lived in 4 cities. Along the way I became a committed Unitarian
Universalist, helped found a drug rehabilitation center in suburban
Philadelphia, and gradually realized I really wanted to do more in life than
be a cog of big business.
So with three teenagers, we headed off to Berkeley, California. to enter
seminary. Risky at the age of 42, but the best thing I ever did aside
from marrying Peg!
I served three churches, Sudbury, Ma., Springfield, Ma. and Poughkeepsie,
NY. We didn't get rich, but it's been a wonderful and rewarding life.
While in seminary I worked on a kibbutz in Israel where I began a
fascination with Islam, one of the three great monotheistic religions.
Two more trips to Israel and Turkey, some academic work on Islam, and a
fascinating sabbatical traveling through the Middle East gave me good
insight into Islam. We traveled from Cairo, with its magnificent
mosques, vibrant culture and majestic beauty of the ancient Egyptian
civilization, to Jordan and Syria.
When you backpack as we did for three months, you really get to know the
people and often were invited into their homes. What a fascinating and
enriching experience!
Soon after our return in l997 I retired, and then we were off for a
six month interim ministry at the Unitarian Church in Auckland, NZ.
In 1999 we did another interim at the Unitarian Church in Cape Town, South
Africa. Both of these experiences of living with and ministering to
"the natives" were truly wonderful experiences.
A month after returning from South Africa we moved to a condo on the Great
Bay in New Hampshire where we kayak in the summer and down hill ski in the
winter.
While in Poughkeepsie I taught a course on Islam at Marist College, and have
continued to teach continuing education courses on world religions.
Last year we were in Thailand and Cambodia for a month and this past spring
I was an interim minister at a beautiful Unitarian Church in London,
England. We have been asked to return so we'll be going back to London
in late August and will come home in November, just in time for our 50th
wedding anniversary.
I neglected to mention our 4 wonderful grandchildren whom we often see as
they all live in southern Maine and north of Boston.
I'm currently on the ACLU board of NH and also on the Planned Parenthood of
Northern New England board, teach and work as a docent for the University of
New Hampshire marine program.
I look forward to seeing many of you at our 55th reunion.

It happened the morning of June 11th, 2001. Jim and I
traveled in much different circles in High School and I never got to
know him very well. Now at this age, the circles don't seem to
matter as much. He was a guy with problems just like me. He
was loved by many and will be missed by many. My regret is that I
never knew him better. My wish is that in some small way we can

Hi! I used to ride the bus to Pgh from Mt.
Lebanon, and one of the nice ladies who rode the bus with me was a Glenna
Carney of Mt. Lebanon. I was 22, and I think Glenna at the time,
was in 1981, was in her late 50s or early 60s. I remember enjoying her
company mostly on the way to work, and we got together a couple times with other
bus friends for lunch....I have thought of her fondly over the years, but have
lost touch. I am now 53. I tried to google her ot see if she was still in the
area and came upon our website. Her high school photo looks like the older
Glenna I remember and I recall her laugh!
Your note said that she
was now in a nursing home. Could you please share where that might be? I'd
love to at least send her a card. I now live in North HIlls and rarely get to
Mt. Lebanon, but she was kind and friendly to me. I remember she was widowed,
I think, and had one or two small dogs at her home.

could mean she has gone to cell phone only. I think she should

been listed at the same address in Mt. Lebanon for over 40 years
and it may be the Guthrie family home.

together and attend. You really brought back memories with
all the names and news - plus showing great humor.
It was a lot of work and all of us appreciate it. Give my
very best to all that attend and although I don't do much
cheerleading now I still do Pilates! Lots of luck and
happiness to all and especially all those who have
contributed to the event. Joan Hastings Crosby –

May 2008:
So glad to get the letter about the 60th reunion. Just
returned from my husbands 60th in Rhode Island - funny how
everyone has aged and we haven't! We were talking about
mine - but had not heard anything. I am sorry to have
missed the 50th,
Great website. Thanks for your work - will be looking
for information on my closer friends.
All is well here considering our vintage - replaced some
knees and etc. - but we are able to keep a busy schedule
with 7 grandkids and 5 sons living in the area. Also
busy with arts and painting,
We spend three months in Florida each year - keep busy with
hobbies and golf.
Other than patching body parts we have taught all our sons
[5] to be loyal Steeler fans - want to go to a game soon -
might consider returning in August. Will let you know.
We are enjoying retirement to the fullest. Joan.

Our Claire
is the woman who came up with Eat'n Park's strawberry pie
If
you're a longtime Pittsburgher, you'll know this: Before the Smiley Cookie,
Eat'n Park's most famous dessert was... ?
That's
right — strawberry pie.
The
signature pie, made with fresh berries in a strawberry glaze and ringed with
whipped cream, celebrates its 60th birthday this month, and it's still very much
on the menu.
And the
woman who created it, 85-year-old Claire Hatch Moore, is still a little
sore about how I it came into the world.
As the
story goes, Claire's husband, Bob, who worked in management with
Eat'n Park (and eventually became CEO), went with his boss to Cleveland to check
out a strawberry pie that the restaurant industry was buzzing about. But the
trio didn't wow them. They thought the pie was too sweet, and Mr. Moore rashly
proclaimed, "My wife, Claire, could make a better one."
"Which
he had no business saying!” Claire said in a phone interview last week,
60-odd years after the fact.
"I was
only 23, and I hadn't cooked that much,” she said. "I was into babies” — they
had two at the time, and went on to have two more, including youngest son,
Bill, who is now Eat'n Park's director of safety and security.
"I
thought, 'Oh, crud,” when her husband said she had to come up with a pie.
She
started with a recipe from a long-since-forgotten cookbook but "fooled with it”
until she came up with the recipe she liked. She foisted pie after pie on the
neighbors, asking for their opinions: Was it too sweet? Too solid?
When
she finally came up with one that everyone seemed to agree on, that's the recipe
Eat'n Park adopted.
Bill
Moore said the pie recipe is one of only a handful of recipes that haven't
been changed or tweaked at all in the 35 years he's been working for the
company.
The
pie's popularity hasn't waned, either. Two years ago, when the Post-Gazette
asked expatriate Pittsburghers to tell us which foods they miss most from their
hometown, many people mentioned Eat'n Park's strawberry pies. Last year, the
chain sold more than 65,000 whole pies and nearly 18o,000 slices of pie. More
than half of Eat'n Park's strawberry pies are sold in May each year, especially
for the Mother's Day and Memorial Day holidays.
Bill
Moore grew up knowing his mom, Claire, was the creator of the famous
pie, but ironically, he never liked strawberries as a kid. He didn't even try
his first slice of Eat'n Park strawberry pie until about two years ago, at which
point he told his mom, "You know what, this is pretty good. I think it might
catch on."
Claire never dreamed her recipe would still boast regional fame 6o years
later. "I was just trying to get out of a jam he'd put me in,” she said of her
husband.
And
although she's the daughter of Eat'n Park founder Larry Hatch, she
apparently never ended up falling in love with baking. When asked whether she's
made a lot of strawberry pies over the years, she shot back, "I haven't made one
since” the original taste tests.
"Why
would I? I can go to Eat'n Park and get them!" - May 2014
June 2005 - Hi!
After 57 years I feel it's time to check in. They were
busy years but I could have made time to write.
I
went to a girls college in VA and then on to Grove City College where I met
my husband
Bob. We have two sons here in Pgh. and one in N. Carolina.
We have nine grandchildren ranging in age from 3rd grade to college.
My
husband is retired and we sold our larger home to one of our sons & built a
smaller home in a nice development near Canonsburg Dam (out route 19).
It has a clubhouse, pool, tennis court etc. and we are enjoying it. I
lunch with
Sally Fellows
O'Conner
(deceased),
Donna K. Simmonds
Thomas and
Ruth Jackson
Coate
(deceased).
Ruth and I also play tennis together.
I also am in a bowling league with
Jeanine Howell Hershey.
Bob and I are not Fla. people so we have taken many trips. We just
came back from a Panama Canal Cruise that was great. It's too
bad that we didn't get to know more of our classmates in school ---- then we
wouldn't draw so many blanks on names. My best to all,
Claire Hatch Moore

statistically possible. We would love to hear from you and would be very happy

February 2003: Thanks for the information about the class
web site. It’s hard to believe it will soon be 55 years since
leaving high school. It’s sometime even harder for me
too believe I’m still around.
Ruth and I are looking forward to the upcoming reunion,
although, I doubt that we’ll recognize many others there.
As for my (our) activity over these years, I would have to say the most
significant thing I have done is to have married my high school sweetheart (Ruth
Labrenz, also class of 48 and also declared deceased in 2018) in 1952 and in bringing up three
outstanding young sons. During this time, I spent twenty-one years in
the military (both stateside and overseas) and an additional nineteen years
as a civilian with the Joint Chiefs of Staff.
Several years prior to our retirement, we started building a home on the
water in Reedville, VA. In 1991, we sold our home in Fairfax, VA, and
moved here permanently. Health permitting, we still enjoy fishing and
sailing on the Chesapeake Bay.

From
Bill Erdman, WebMaster: What a sad e-mail message from
Mary Murrie Hardy today telling me that
Kash Herron Hibler had died last Saturday the 12th of August,
2000. Sad because she died, sad because she is one of us, sad
because of those she left behind, sad because the majority of us lost
track of her after graduation and sad because I don't know what to
say.
I always had a soft spot in my
heart for
Kash, probably because of her red hair. My Dad was a red head
and as it turned out our youngest son has red hair and his daughter,
Grace, has red hair. But more than that, Kash was always
pleasant to me in high school and I always meant to tell her that but
never took the time. I guess I was waiting for her biographical
information so I would have a reason to write back and thank her for her
kindness. What a shame that we always seem to wait too long to
tell people the good things about them. I plan to rectify that
with some other people as soon as I upload this tribute to her.
Thanks for the nice memories,
Kash.

John
Hewston
In the Commencement program, he is listed as John H. Hewston.
In national records search, there is only one listing for a John H.
Hewston, in Miami. In SS Death Index, there is a listing for
John Hewston b. 11/10/28 d. 12/ /83 in Miami, FL and a
SS# issued in PA. In June 1948 he would be 19 1/2 yrs. old and
this is possible if he were held back a year. There was no obit
listed in the Miami Herald in 1983, so I have no confirmation on this
one. Moved John

sadness into my day and another wake-up call to enjoy today and love and
forgive everyone. If ever I said an unkind word or did an unkind

youth not malice. We are all unique in the sight of God - whoever
