50th Reunion
SCARVACE,
CHARLES "GAR", Age 81, of Mt. Lebanon, surrounded by his loving family
on Monday, August 6, 2012. Beloved husband of M. Janet (Leive), whom
he married in 1955; loving father of Lorraine Learish and her husband
Scott A. and John M. Scarvace; grandfather of Jessica
Learish and her friend Ryan DeGregory and Joseph M. Learish
and his friend Laura Plummer; brother of Annette Recupero,
Marie Pascarella, Anthony Scarvace and his wife Mary Clare
and the late Joseph Scarvace; also survived by many nieces and
nephews.
"Gar" was a produce
vender in the South Hills from 1951 to 1980. He served in the US Army as a
member of the 82nd Airborne from 1953-1955 and from 1982 to 1992 worked as a
custodian in the Mt. Lebanon School District. Charlie was a member and
served as an usher at Our Lady of Grace Church and was a volunteer for Catholic
Charities for several years.
From
1958 Reunion Newsletter:
CHARLIE SCARVACE. Won a prize at the reunion for
returning his acceptance reservation first & couldn't collect
because he didn't show up! 1412 Missouri Ave., Bridgeville, Pa.
From
Bill Erdman, WebMaster: Charlie was a quiet
gentleman in high school. Unassuming and reserved he was the type
of guy who was pleasant to be around. Charlie was not a
best friend to me but he was a friend at all times. I have to
repeat my oft said comment, "I wish I knew him better in high school as
as he mature." I'm sure he was a terrific man.

May 29, 2008: I
thought you might like a more recent photo of Betty for the
reunion website. I believe it was taken around the time she was
diagnosed with cancer--probably in the fall of 2001. She is talking on
the phone, which was something she loved to do. (See below)
Anyone who has
a memory or story to share about Betty from school days we'd love to hear any tales there are to tell from her younger days.
Dan Klager,
son-in-law of Elizabeth Scharnberg Brockett, husband of
Kathy
Brockett Klager
May 26,2008, we received this
beautiful tribute to Betty from her son-in-law,
Dan:
He, We received my
mother-in-law's (Betty Scharnberg Brockett) invitation to the Mt.
Lebanon Class of '48 60th reunion. I wanted to inform you that she is
no longer living, but I see that you have found that information in the
meantime since you mailed the invitation.
You probably know that
Betty had four children, and worked (and lived) in Crystal Lake,
Illinois as a middle school Home Ec teacher. I see that she was a
member of the Needle & Thread Squad in high school; that must have been
fun as she made a career in that field. My wife (Betty's
daughter) often comments on various pieces of clothing that Betty
made for her or one of the other kids in the family when they were
growing up.
Betty and her
husband, Donald Brockett, retired in the late 1980s and moved to
Pace, Florida, just outside Pensacola. They alternated between Pace and
their beach condo in Gulf Shores, AL. Betty just loved the
beach! Walking barefoot on the sand or in the shallow water, feeling
the breeze and smelling the air. It was her special place and she was
in heaven when she was there.
In the fall of 2001
Betty was diagnosed with lung cancer. She received the standard
treatments of radiation and chemotherapy, but succumbed to the disease
on December 3, 2003 in Pensacola, Florida. But even as the cancer was
slowly sapping her, she was still able to do things and enjoy her family
and hobbies those last two years. We are grateful for that.
Betty once
commented that she had smoked for about fifty years. She said she was
just six or seven when she started. I think she would sneak a cigarette
and go off somewhere out of sight and smoke it. She did quit later in
life, but I guess fifty years of smoking was probably destined to catch
up with her sooner or later. Perhaps some of her Mt. Lebanon classmates
remember sneaking off to smoke with her as youngsters!
Betty's
husband Don passed away December 17, 2007 two weeks after
suffering a stroke. I believe he may have attended a reunion with her,
so some of the reunion attendees may remember having met him.
I'd like to compliment
you on such a nice web-site. It is very well done and surely helps to
keep you all up to date and in touch with one another. If only all
websites were so well constructed.
In closing, I hope you
all have a nice, well attended 60th reunion.

Since I wrote the above, Betty's son-in-law,

she lived her life. As a non-smoker I can only lament all the
years people have lost to that curse. I don't criticize as I've

Just wanted you to know Cy passed away yesterday. He went
peacefully. He so enjoyed your visit and talked about it often. I am
doing OK and with time will be better. Our kids are here with me.
Shirley
writes: We are surviving the lock-up also. We didn't do much anyway but just
knowing that we can't do anything outside of our home is really frustrating. It
won't last forever tho. Cyrus is doing ok. Today is not a bad day. I am
hoping to take him to Florence, OR, in August for a week. At least I am hoping
we will be able to do that. He loves the coast and our son lives there so
should be a great thing to do.
Stay well. Love,
Shirley and Cyrus - May 2020
Hello,
we think about you two often also. I am doing fine. Cy is not so good
but hanging in there. The weather has been great the last few days so we have
been able to get outside once in a while. Stay well and keep in touch.
Shirley, June 2019
Per Cy's lovely wife, Shirley, Cy is
very fragile and in quite a bit of pain with his leg but still in good spirits
and hasn't lost his sense of humor. April 2017
Cy is doing about the
same. He refuses any more surgery so we do what we can to help with the nerve
pain. These “golden years” are something, huh? Shirley – July 2016
Hello there, 2015 has
not been an exceptionally good year health wise. Cyrus has had 5 major
surgeries since Dec 22, 2014. He is doing well but definitely not in the best
of shape. Traveling is not in the near future for him. I am so thankful that
he is still with us. We recently just had our 13th great grandchild. 13 is a
lucky number they tell me. And she is a beauty. We now have to rent a
fellowship hall for Christmas get together. Cyrus and I wish you all
good health and happiness. Shirley – November 2
Kay and I
dropped in to see Cyrus and Shirley on our way North and had a
wonderful chat about old-times at MtL, the pros and cons of hair, how he came to
live in Washington and how wonderful life is in spite of physical problems.
He
and Shirley were gracious hosts. - June 2013.
Always love
getting your e-mails. Yes, we are still here. Cy Schick –
November 2011 The only update is we are now
expecting our 11 and 12th great grandchildren. Wow. We had a
couple here for 2 days and what a joy. A 2 year old and a 3 year
old. Goodness they are busy!
Cy
is going from canes to a walker soon. He is really fighting this but for safety
purposes, it has to happen. He fell a couple years ago and broke his hip and
has been struggling ever since. He is a fighter tho. Thanks for keeping him
updated. He really enjoys hearing from you.
I will
have to have my grandson help me with pictures to send. Cy is still as
handsome as ever, at least to me. He did lose his mop of hair. But bald is
sexy. Shirley

Jane Ewing "Jenny" Schwartz
Brookes
Dear
Bill, I was reading the class
notes and read that you wondered what had happened to my cousin during
her last 59 years. I can fill you in on a bit of her later life.
Jane graduated from Carnegie
Mellon in 1952 and went to work in a downtown-Pittsburgh investment
office. In about 1956, she pulled up stakes and went to Massachusetts
to attend Radcliffe College to take graduate courses. While studying
there, she met Warren Brookes, a writer and journalist, and married him
in June, 1958. They lived in Marblehead, Mass., where Warren wrote
about economics for The Christian Science Monitor. He later worked for
a newspaper in Washington, D.C., and they moved to a farm in Leesburg,
Virginia. Jane helped him with his writing, and he wrote
several books, including The Economy of Mind. Both Warren and Jane
were well known in conservative circles, and knew Jack Kemp and his
brothers as well as many other conservative thinkers. Warren died in
the early 1990’s. Jane decided to stay at their Leesburg farm,
and hoped to finish a book Warren was working on when he died. Jane
was in ill health during the last year of her life, but she lived at her
farm until the last weeks of her life. She passed away in January,
2007.
Having grown up with Jane, I
missed her, as we did not get to see each other often after we were
married. We always seemed to live so far from each other. She was a
very talented person, particularly in music – being a very accomplished
pianist. She and Warren never had children, but she had a brother and a
niece and nephew, with whom she was close.
Thanks for all you do for the Class of
’48.

I knew all three of the Schwartz ladies...special people all.
I particularly knew
Tudy

was such
a talented piano player. I was told that she was active in the
Christian Science Church.-

Florence Schwartz's
e-mail today was one of those "good news, bad news" types of
communications. Good news that we were able to remove
Florence from the "Lost" page and put her new information among
the "S" people. Bad news that we learned of Jenny's
death. Again I am sad at the loss and sad at the lack of
information about Jenny's last 59 years. I've always wanted
to remind Jenny that on our third date, she thought I was
"Too Fast" because I tried to hold her hand as we crossed a street!

Lowell Simonson left his
earthly life on Dec. 24, 2009, after a three-year courageous battle
with cancer. His family is at ease knowing that he is in a
better place, where he is no longer suffering.
He was born June 28, 1931, in Pittsburgh, Pa. Lowell
graduated from the University of Pittsburgh with a degree in
business and accounting. He worked for many years in the
textile industry, which took him to various parts of the country.
He and Ann loved traveling, and they took a trip every year
to a different part of the world. He enjoyed all sports,
especially playing golf.
Lowell will continue to live in the hearts of his wife,
Ann; his brother, Barrie; his children, Si, Kip,
Michelle and Eric; their spouses, Kathy, Tad
and Valerie; their children, Amy, Sarah,
Miriam, Hannah, Rachel, Kayla and Kyle;
his stepchildren, Linda, Clarke and Kelly;
their spouses, Kathy and Barry; their children,
Dawn Lisa, Sharon, Christopher, Matthew,
Timothy, Alicia and Amber; as well as countless
amazing and cherished friends who have been touched by an
unforgettable man, each of whom has many joyous memories of
Lowell that make this difficult time easier to get through.
Lowell's family will be having a celebration of his life at
Trinity Presbyterian Church on Saturday, Jan. 2, 2010, at 1 p.m. In
lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to Family
Hospice Center of Prescott, Ariz., or a charity of your choice.
Lowell will be missed terribly, but never forgotten.
Information provided by survivors.

again by how fleeting life has been. The last time I saw
Lowell was our 50th Reunion
where he promised to send me an update on his life. As you can
see below, time passes quickly and we don't always get "a round tuit".
I'm sad that we know nothing more than what is written in his
obituary - we don't know about his "dash", the activities between
1931 and 2009. That information and Lowell's friendship
is our combined loss. Lowell's obituary indicates that
a loving family is missing him greatly -

WebMaster's note, February 2011 - Harry's wife, Kathy,
died in October of 2010.
From
Bill Erdman, WebMaster: Life has a way
of giving each of us a wake-up call every so often. Today I
received mine from Kathy when she called about Harry's
death. Harry and I both went to Lehigh University - in
fact we rode back and forth many times and each trip was a memorable
event. For example, Harry and another Lehigh Classmate,
John Stallings, both played trumpet and enjoyed playing them as
we went through the Pennsylvania Turn Pike tunnels - both of them
hanging out the windows and playing as loudly as they could!
I've stopped at Harry's
homes several times and got to know Kathy and some of their
kids. I will miss him and his numerous phone calls asking about the
Reunions and
Bill Stanley.
Rest well, Harry, and keep blowing your horn for all heaven

In August of 2022 I sent out a blanket
email trying to interest people in having a "Zoom Reunion."
Dave's email and forwarded email both came back as "not-valid". Sadly I must
transfer him to the deceased list in hopes that someone will correct me if I
am in error. - August 2022.
The reason that I
haven't sent you any news about me is that there just isn't much
happening. I just keep getting older and there really isn't much
excitement around here. My wife and I are still running our B & B
and probably will for as long as we can. We get to meet really
interesting people to add spice to our lives, and get paid for it to
boot, as they say. Have thought of selling our house and moving to
something smaller, but who can sell a house these days. Our
glorious leader (the anointed one) has seen to that. So we just sit
and have a good time. Our health has been pretty good, and the kids
and grandkids are doing well. Still have just two great-grandkids
who are growing like weeds and will soon be big enough to pick me
up. Also, our little dog Buster is doing OK - he's five this year,
and it's like having a kid again. Have a granddaughter's wedding
coming up next summer, so that gives us something to look forward
to. My best to all the other classmates, and I'll check back in if
anything happens. As for the 65th, I just don't make plans that far
in advance any more. (Don't buy green bananas, as they say). Maybe
I'll come in one of those motorized chairs that you see advertised
on TV.(It didn't cost me one cent as they say.) (Well, buddy, I
paid for it in my Medicare) That's all I can think of now - will
send more if anything happens. Dave Smith – October 2010
I am doing
OK - as good as you can when you're old - The only updates I have is
that the grandchildren are graduating and we are expected to attend
all the ceremonies. Every year it seems there is another one.

We were sad that we were not able to stay over with him that night.

immensely.
May 2007:
I agree the Reunion should be at a less formal place than the 50th.
Somewhere where there is easy parking and few steps to climb, as
steps and I don't get along very well any more. As of now I
will attend if my health holds out. Dave

After college (Penn State) and service in the military, I got involved in
the computer business, and worked in engineering and marketing (both
hardware and software) for many years, ending up in Washington DC.
Left there for a simpler life and have been here for 25 years in Muncy, Pa,
a small town (2-stoplights) on the Susquehanna River.
My (first and only) wife of 45 years and I have owned
the Bodine Bed & Breakfast (actually, it’s our home) for 20 years,
and have hosted around 12,000 guests, including several from Mt. Lebanon.
We have 4 children, 8 grandchildren, and a great-grandson. We both
sing in an 80 voice community chorale, and in church choirs. We are
involved in community affairs –Chamber of Commerce, Planning Commission,
etc.
Won’t be able to attend the 55th reunion due to business and personal
commitments. Will try be there for the 60th, if there is one.

BOB
STABILE - Robert Victor "Bob" Stabile, 83, resident of
321 Gatewood Dr. C-1 The Gates, husband of June Elizabeth
Myers Stabile, died August 25, 2013, at Richard M.
Campbell Veterans Nursing Home in Anderson.
Born in
Pittsburgh, PA, January 13, 1930, he was a son of the late Nicholas J.
and Helen Bava Stabile.
He was
a graduate of the University of Pittsburgh and a US Air Force Veteran. Bob
was a practicing CPA in Pennsylvania until his retirement in 1992. He was an
avid golfer and was a member of Our Lady of Lourdes Catholic Church.
Surviving in addition to his wife of 42 years are three sons, David,
Jeff and Todd; a daughter Barbara; nine grandchildren, three
great-grandchildren and a number of cousins, nieces and nephews. He was
predeceased by a brother, Nicholas J. Stabile, Jr. and a sister, Helen
Hasler.
In lieu
of flowers, the family requests that memorials may be made to the Alzheimer's
Association – From a Google search November 2015
August 2010:
Bill, I just learned
that
Al Paulus'
(deceased) wife,
Lois, passed away on 7/25/10. I need his mailing
address should you have it. Thanks for the help.
Al an I were hi
school and college buddies.
Nothing new here, just
wasting away doing nothing. I gave up driving a few months
back, now I'm really bored. Bob – August 2010
February 2008: I have relocated to Greenwood, South
Carolina
February 2005: A lot has happened since I last sent in an
update. My wife,
June, had a terrible period from '02 thru '04 with congestive heart
failure ('02) and breast cancer ('04). But thanks to the good
Lord, she has become "Cancer Free" and her heart has been stabilized
with a pacemaker / defibrillator. She is now back on the golf
course whipping my fanny and enjoying every minute.
My
lovely wife did a number on me. Our neighbors joined us for dinner at
a local restaurant one evening, as we entered the dinning room there stood
my three sons (sounds like a good show for TV) David and Jeff
(Pittsburgh) and Todd (Millers, Maryland) along with their spouses,
plus my daughter
Barbara and her spouse, Mike, from Phoenix, AZ.
Needless to say I was speechless and a quite tearful. The kids arrived
on a Monday and my birthday was on the following Thursday, the 13th of
January. I was informed that we were going to celebrate the entire
week and we did! That is one birthday I shall never forget - #75.
I will be traveling
to China in May for two weeks with my good buddy and next door neighbor,
Al Rogers. Then in August, my son David and grandson
Jason will be traveling to Italy in search of our "roots".
June does not like to travel, especially by air, so when the
opportunities came up and my neighbors promised to keep an eye on June
while I'm away, I jumped at the chances. I knew I was getting older
when I realized my son David had turned 50 and is also a grandfather
which, makes me "Great". The tally now is 9 grandchildren and 1
great-grandchild.
Well it's getting
close to libation time, so my wishes to all for a very healthy new year.
Bob
March 2004: I was going through some
old photos the other day when I came a cross six pix that I took at an MTL
football game either in '47 or '48.
They are, unfortunately, rolled up. I believe they could be copied
with a scanner then, if you wish, put on the MTL web site.
They are pix of a game (someone scoring a TD), cheerleaders, etc.
All but one picture has 9/20/46 written on the back -
Click to look
Recognize anyone? Bob.
April 2002: Our valentines day was not one of joy. My
wife,
June, suffered congestive heart failure. She's on the road
to recovery. Her heart was damaged by, of all things, a virus???
She goes to physical therapy three times a week. The process is slow,
but best of all, she's still with us - Thank you Lord!
June
is not out of the woods yet. If the therapy and medication don't
work, we are looking at a heart transplant. Your prayers will be
greatly appreciated.
Our 12 month old lab,
Charlie, actually saved her life by awakening me at 1AM with a loud bark
in my ear.
June
had been walking around the house thinking whatever her problem was would go
away. She told me
Charlie
followed her everywhere. When she sat,
Charlie
would place his head on her lap. Around 1AM, he must have felt
it was time I got involved. I called 911. The next
day,
June's
cardiologist told us had we been another 20 - 30 minutes later getting to
the hospital, she would have been gone. So, we have a hero in
Charlie. When the neighbors walk by the house or come to
visit they make sure to bring
Charlie
a cookie.

Bob's Biography
E-mail of
July 10th, 2000: My college days were broken up by a four-year
tour of duty with the USAF. I returned home married and a father of
two boys, David and Jeff.
After my discharge, I returned to Pitt and, in 1957,received my BBA degree.
My daughter Barbara attended the graduation ceremonies. She was
not aware of the event, as she was six months away from her birth, in
December of 1957.
I was employed by Arthur Young and Co (now Ernst and Young) where I remained
until 1960, when I took on the position of Controller for a small home
building company in Elizabeth, Pa. . I remained with that company until
1963.
I received my CPA degree in 1960, and in the spring of 1963, I went into
private practice. In 1983, a client persuaded me to sell my practice
and join his company to run the financial affairs. I remained there
until my retirement in April 1993.
June
and I were married in 1971; she brought her son
Todd
along as part of the package.
To date we have nine grandchildren and on May 4th, 2000, we
became great-grandparents.
In 1978, June and I bought an old farmhouse (circa 1862) in Ruff
Creek, Pa (just a tad north of Waynesburg). We slowly put it back
together.
We lived there until the fall of 1998. We decided that we had seen
enough snow and cold weather so off we went to Pawleys Island, SC.
It’s tough playing golf in January, but somebody has to do it.
I celebrated my 70th
last January and was pleasantly surprised when my daughter
Barbara, from Arizona, showed up to help me celebrate; followed by my
son David
from Pittsburgh. A good time was had by all and a b’day I shall never
forget.
Jeff
and
Todd
couldn’t make it. They did, however, give me a call.
There you have it, not too exciting. I have been truly blessed by the
Almighty with good health, a good family and a wonderful roommate.
Ciao, Bob

I hate to be the

17th, 2012.
From the
Pittsburgh Post Gazette:
Nancy Staggs Toler,
Age 81, died on St. Patrick's Day, March 17, 2012. She earned her RN from
Duquesne & became a school nurse in the Mt. Lebanon School District, where
she met her recently departed) husband
Dick Toler,

If desired, memorials may be made to the Autism Center of Pittsburgh.
From
Marty McVay,
November 2010 - Bob
& I had a reunion lunch in Mt. Lebanon with Nancy Staggs Toler
and Dick in October. Fun to get together and recall happy
times! - Marty
August 2007 - Dear
Bill,
I visited our website for the first time and it is GREAT. What
really got to me was the
obituary section
- How could we have lost all those people?
We all have lots of
new friends, but there's nothing like the high school friends. We can meet
somewhere, after years apart, and talk like it was yesterday.
When I saw
Joanie Dunbar's empty death notice, I decided I had to fill it in.
I'll tell you what I remember, and if I find the obituary the kids sent me
I'll send dates later.
I tried to e-mail it
but being a novice I think you only got part of it, so back to the word
processor and regular mail.
I'll see you next
year, God willing.

wants to take on the planning. - May 2019

sudden death. Bud seems to be doing well in spite of his
message. He still plans on sending me some updates on his life. -

Will wonders never cease? I
