Walter ZehnerRandy Zehner
February 10, 2013

Hellertown, Pa., Feb.  10, 2013.  Mr.  Zehner was a brother of Theta Delta Chi fraternity and a member of the debate club.  He served in the U.S.  Army and received the National Defense Service Medal, the Korean Service Medal and the United Nations Service Medal.  He was employed by the Bethlehem Steel Corp.  As an alumnus, he was a dedicated volunteer, involved with reunion and the Senior Alumni Council, volunteering at the Visitor's Desk, and serving in class officer positions.  He received the Persa Award in 2002. - Fall Alumni Bulletin, 2013

From Jim Clark (deceased) telephone calls in April 2012 concerning the 60th Reunuion:  Randy Zehner:  Randy has to miss this one.  He's going to his grandson's wedding in Indiana.

Summer 2010 Bulletin:  Randy Zelmer sent along news that our Class of 1952 Scholarship endowment market value is in excess of $185,000.  Contributions to our class fund are still possible with definite tax advantages available, particularly in estate matters.  ‑thanks, Randy, for the update.

Spring 2007 Alumni Bulletin - Letters from two of my favorite friends found me early in the new year‑Randy Zehner and John Kerr (deceased).  Randy passed along information of our current Class of 1952 scholarship recipient, and John wished season's greetings and told me about a book called Big Games, College Football's Greatest Rivalries by Michael Bradley.  The Lehigh / Lafayette traditional rivalry is prominently mentioned in the book.

Spring 2006 - Pat Moran (deceased)  received a nice note arrived in the New Year from Randy, along with bios of our Class of 1952 Scholarship recipients.  We have two recipients this year, Raymond G. Lahoud '06, Easton, Pa., and Marissa K. lannarone '06, North Caldwell, N.J.  Both sent warm letters of thanks for the opportunity to study at Lehigh, which may not have been possible without the financial help of our class.  Raymond graduated with highest honors and will attend law school.  Marissa graduated with higher honors, is captain of the field hockey team, and made first‑team All Patriot League.  They are two truly impressive Lehigh students.

January 2006 - Randy passed along more update letters from our Scholarship Recipients.

Fall 2005 - I receive periodic updates from Randy Zehner, our very diligent class agent, regarding the progress of the Lehigh Fund.  Randy happily notes that you are opening your wallets and donating generously.  We have exceeded our goal of $I00,000, and 60 percent participation is within sight.

August 2005 - My plate is beginning to overflow and I find myself unable to commit the time and energy to the role of Class Agent which it deserves.  I'm healthy and happy but have finally come to realize that I can't do it all.  I offer my immediate resignation.  I am proud of our accomplishments, particularly in the last campaign and appreciate the support you and your staff have provided.  Thank you.   Sincerely, Randy

April 2005 - I also have good news to report on our class fundraising efforts.  We have already exceeded our goal for this fiscal year. A complete report will be in the mail soon.  Thanks everyone.  Keep up the good work.  Randy

From Winter 2004 Bulletin - Class agent Randy Zehner, a hardworking classmate and good guy, is kicking off another fundraising season and reports that an additional option is being made available for classmates who wish to contribute to our Class Scholarship Fund.  The Fund currently has a book value of $40,410 and has made it possible to provide financial aid to nine worthy students in recent years.  Our goal is to bring the book value to $400,000 by our 55th Class Reunion in 2007.  This would provide a full scholarship for at least one eligible student.  Let's all support the Class Scholarship Fund with generous contributions when the appropriate time comes.

July 2004 - I am happy to report that Edna Ball and I were married on July 14, 2004 at a family gathering in Hellertown Penna.  I am a happy man and now understand how Ed Leidheiser (deceased) felt several years ago.  I should also mention that July 14 is not only my wedding anniversary but also my bride's birthday.  The consequences of forgetting that special day are unthinkable. Randy

From Sprint 2004 Alumni Bulletin:  Randy Zehner called just before the column deadline with good news:  First, Randy announced his engagement to Edna Ball, a very fine lady who lives in the same adult community.  Next, Randy has agreed to serve as class agent, taking over from the very capable Ralph Fortney, who served admirably for 15 years.  A pleasant aspect of the job, according to Ralph, is keeping in touch with the recipient of scholastic aide from the Scholarship Fund endowed by the class.  We salute Ralph for all his years of devotion to the class.

Randy Zehner sent this communiqué Spring 2003: "Congratulations everyone!  We set a record attendance of 122 returning alumni (at our 50th) of which 118 of 411 classmates (29 percent) attended the parade.  More than 9.5 million dollars was presented to the university as a result of contributions over the last five years.  This is a marvelous accomplishment."  These are the revised final figures.

ZehnerFrom 50th Reunion Book, 2002 - Entered Bethlehem Steel Corporation loop course.  Served in U.S. Army Corps of Engineers in Japan, 1952 to 1954.  Employed by Bethlehem Steel in Saucon Structural Mills from 1952 to 1964.  Engaged in start-up of 160 inch plate mill and 80 inch hot sheet mill at Bums Harbor, Indiana plant.  Worked as Yield Engineer and Technology Engineer. Retired in 1983 as Senior Engineer in Technology.

Married Gloria Reese in 1952; 3 daughters and 3 grandchildren. Gloria passed away in 1980.

Currently very active in a local Moravian Church, serving in leadership and managing a program to bring public health supplies, medication and instruction to children on the Atlantic coast of Nicaragua.  Greatest pleasure is fly fishing and touring the northern Rocky Mountains as well as opera, choral and classical music.
