Winter 2015
Pat Moran
(now deceased):
Greetings from the "central
highlands,” the high chaparral country of northern Arizona. At this writing a
few weeks before Christmas, we are enjoying moderate 50s-60s weather with low
20s in the mornings. Pretty nice weather for those of us who don't particularly
like the cold.
Have you noticed as we age that
everything seems to either shrink or leak?!
When the people fear the
government, it's called anarchy. When the government fears the people, it's
called liberty.
I received a very pleasant phone
call and subsequent letter from
Fred Arnold
(deceased), who
with wife, Bert, lives in a 55 and older community in Upper Gwynedd, Pa.
I used to travel that area (Lansdale, Blue Bell) when I was selling. I remember
it well. Fred
says his main pastime is painting (watercolors), mostly landscapes and
wildlife. He plays tennis occasionally, when he can find three "healthy
seniors” for doubles.
Fred
and Bert
travel annually to some region of the world (Bert has been to over 108
countries). So, how many new places are left to visit?! Bert just
completed her first book, Somewhere Out There: A Memoir, the story of her 15
1/2 years in an orphanage in the Depression and WWII years and the trauma and
pain she endured. The book is getting good press and is available at Barnes &
Noble or through Amazon. Thanks,
Fred, for a great
update. Good luck to you and Bert. See you at our 65th.
Latest update from the traveling
Erdmans,
Bill
and Kay. They have been to Puerto Morelos, Mexico, 30 miles south of
Cancun. They snorkeled on a coral reef, toured several Mayan ruins, swam in the
Cenote Boca del Puma (fancy name for seven sinkholes).
Speaking of traveling,
Dick Schmidt
(deceased), my Arizona "neighbor,” recently completed an odyssey that took him
and Carolyn to Maine, PA, and NJ. Part of the PA segment was to honor
the 1950 undefeated Lehigh football team at the Penn game. What a hoot it must
have been, to see those "olde” footballers, all of them in their mid-80s, trot
or shuffle onto the field! God bless them! In the NJ part of the trip,
Dick
got back to his old hometown, Bound Brook, and to "the shore"—Manasquan, Point
Pleasant and Normandy Beach. Those names bring back memories to your
correspondent. Then they traveled back to Maine, where Carolyn has many
relatives. They made a trip to L.L. Bean and spent some time in the Maine
mountains.
Dick,
you get high marks for stamina. What a trip!
Thanks, '52'ers, for your
letters, emails and phone calls. I love hearing from you and passing it on to
the class. Keep them coming in 2016!
