Spring 2004 Column

Pat Moran (now deceased):

The mailbag is full this column, so let's get to it!

Bob Hoyt, a frequent contributor, wrote a series of emails.  Sadly, one reported the passing of his wife, Terry. She battled cancer for seven years and is survived by Bob, six children and 15 grandchildren.  We extend sincerest condolences from the class to Bob and his family.  In July 2003, Bob, along with 1,200 other veterans from 21 countries, spent five days in Korea celebrating the end of hostilities that occurred 50 years ago on July 27, 1953.  Bob also mentioned that he has spent 18 years modeling and recently appeared in a Brooks Brothers ad in Vanity Fair magazine.

Some of the true joys in writing this column are the Christmas greetings I receive. The smiling faces of Betsey and Mayo Snyder (deceased) always brighten my day.  They are enjoying life in the village of Cooperstown, N.Y., and visited with Dotsie and Pete Shaw (deceased) twice in 2003.  Other newsy cards arrived from Evelyn and Allen Levan, Mary Jo and Jim Johnston (deceased), and Sue Ann and Ralph Fortney. Another one of my favorite cards came from Mary Lou and Ed Leidheiser (deceased)  (recent columns have chronicled their history and marriage). The picture of Ed and Mary Lou tells it all.  I quote in part from their text: "A year of living, loving and traveling, but still feel like honeymooners as we settle into our Flat Rock, N.C., homestead.  From Washington and Oregon to South Carolina beaches and St. Augustine, to high school reunion in New York and then to Europe.  We managed the underground trains with aplomb in Berlin, Munich, Vienna and Prague.  Cathedrals and palaces to vineyards and wine cellars and visiting friends in Germany and Hungary."  Mary Lou and Ed, who deserve high marks for stamina, completed their card by mentioning that they saw Sue Ann and Ralph Fortney at Sea Island, Ga., and St. Augustine, Fla.

In November, Chick Kuss solicited by phone for the Lehigh Fund.  Bill Erdman, asks the class for information that he can post.

Randy Zehner (deceased) called just before the column deadline with good news:  First, Randy announced his engagement to Edna Ball, a very fine lady who lives in the same adult community.  Next, Randy has agreed to serve as class agent, taking over from the very capable Ralph Fortney, who served admirably for 15 years.  A pleasant aspect of the job, according to Ralph, is keeping in touch with the recipient of scholastic aide from the Scholarship Fund endowed by the class.  We salute Ralph for all his years of devotion to the class.

This year we were able to provide a partial scholarship in the amount of $9,680 to Kyra D Specht '04.  Kyra, a finance major, makes dean's list every year, is active on and off campus, and holds memberships in a number of honor societies.

Randy concludes, "We should not be satisfied with providing only partial scholarship aide.  It would be another star in the crown of the class to increase the endowment of the Class Fund to a point where it could provide a full scholarship.  Questions in this regard should be directed to the Office of Development."

I'll put a wrap on this edition by saying that our second Lehigh-Lafayette football telecast was a complete success!  Seventeen Lehigh Club of Southern Arizona screamers savored our victory and vowed to return next year.
