A Savior Is Born To You Today

Española

Scripture: Luke 2:1-10 (NRSV) – (Please read the entire text in your Bible)

Message: Today I want to share with you the story of my dear grandfather, Thomas. He had dedicated himself to working hard so that his family could get ahead, especially for us without a mother.

At 85, he kept many memories besides enduring some pain and deafness that accompanied him for several years, and he walked with the help of a cane in the fields. For him, age did not matter, the intention was to care for us and move us forward. Each day he would sit for at least half an hour in the morning and the afternoon to pray for us and others. For a few minutes, he would pray on his worn and aching knees, and he would tell us, "children, there is always hope, and one day you will be important people"

Lately, my grandfather thought he no longer had much to offer, but with that exemplary attitude, on every Christmas night, he would tell us “on a day like today, in the city of David, a Savior has been born, who is Christ the Lord” ..."Today hope was born." His heart and his face reflected deep gratitude for his loving Savior and Lord.

Brothers and sisters, today, the Lord gives us a very significant, profound, and powerful message. In the Scripture, the first to receive this great news were the humble shepherds, who represented the marginalized people, those rejected by society, and sometimes even considered beggars and thieves. However, these humble shepherds opened their hearts, and they honored the newborn, glorifying God for all the things they had heard and seen.

Only those who have the shepherd’s desire for hope and trust to believe would be able to decipher the signs of God's presence and intervention in daily life; welcoming Jesus into their own existence.

In the midst of the challenging events of today, may the announcement of the arrival of the Savior and the welcoming spirit of humble shepherds allow us to continue walking and sharing hope as “Partners in Mission.”

Family Activity: Ask a child to read Christ’s birth story from Luke 2:1-20. Discuss the mystery of the story, and the meaning of the shepherds recognizing Jesus as the Messiah.

Prayer: God of Life and History, who first called the humble shepherds of Bethlehem to adore Your Son joyfully, grant us that our proclamation and testimony of the Gospel be so faithful that the poor, the humble, and the forgotten of this world be always welcomed through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.
