Our Path To Resurrection

 Nuestro camino a la Resurrección

Española

Our Path To Resurrection

Scripture: 1 Peter 1:3 (NRSV) – “Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ! By his great mercy he has given us a new birth into a living hope through the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead.”

Message: I love Resurrection morning, the sun rising on the horizon, and the new day confirming that Jesus is Resurrected. He is alive! Darkness, death, and evil have been defeated!

We often seem to look at the goal, and we work hard to reach it, as if we are in a race just to gain the prize. We tend to idealize ends more than the process of getting there. We are a society so focused on reaching goals and success, that we forget that there may be more sense and meaning in walking the path.

Jesus, from birth to the resurrection, spent his life walking from one place to another, preaching, teaching, healing, and being with people who either were in the middle of a conflict, or were considered sinners, unwanted, marginalized or problematic. Jesus was seen as a threat and a problem for his own people, especially the ones in power. His path to resurrection required lots of work, prayer, caring for people, patience, as well as facing danger and temptations. The world was broken, and He learned first-hand; the path was never meant to be easy, and it was not.

A Spanish poet, Antonio Machado (1875-1939), summarizes the importance of the path we walk; he writes, “Walker, there is no path, the path is made by walking.”1 Machado speaks to us about life: the path of our life we make when we walk in it. He points that our life does not have to follow the path that others have made. Jesus knew he had to create and show humanity that a new path was possible. Today, as the sun rises, I want to honor Jesus’ strength, faith, and above all, His humanity and fearless conviction that has left us with the promise of a new path and a new life through His resurrection.

Prayer: God of all creation, light in our darkness, life over death, confirm in our hearts Your immense love, and grant us the privilege to keep walking with You. Thank You for sending Jesus Christ Your beloved Son to be in our path and be our guide. Amen.

The Greatest Gift Is Love

Domingo, Diciembre 25, 2022

El Mejor Regalo Es El Amor

Española

The Greatest Gift Is Love

ShepherdsScripture: Luke 2:10-11 (NRSV) – “But the angel said to them, ‘Do not be afraid; for see – I am bringing you good news of great joy for all the people: to you is born this day in the city of David a Savior, who is the Messiah, the Lord.’”

Message: It took about 12 hours flying to visit my only sister; the youngest of five children. About 12 years is our age difference. While we have more differences, she is probably the only person in the world for whom I would leave it all behind to go to her if she needs me. Love is the reason, because my heart extends, forgives, and grows when it calls to the bond that unites us no matter where we are.

One often hears that the greatest gift is love, and I thought I knew all about love by now, with all the ups and the downs, the sweetness and the bitterness, the closeness and the longings, the fullness and the emptiness. However, it was not until I saw my sister’s eyes when holding her newborn baby girl for the first time that I understood how love is even greater than I ever thought and imagined possible.

Today Jesus is in the arms of Mary and Joseph, and I cannot stop thinking of God looking at this baby from above with indescribable love, greater than we could ever possibly imagine. A love that expands in abundant grace. Love sent in Jesus to be shared with each one of us no matter who we are, where we are, or what we look like. Love for everyone!

The greatest gift to all humanity is Emmanuel! Let’s receive it. Let us share it! God’s Love is for you and for me, and for all people.

Family Activity: Please invite those with you to read: Mark 1:1-2 (Isaiah prophesy); Matthew: 2:1-2 (Magi); Luke 2: 8-12 (Shepherds); and John 1:1-5 (Mystical/Spiritual – The Word) and explore how each of the stories reveals an important aspect of God’s love for you.

Prayer: God, Father, and Mother of life, thank You for Your immense and inexhaustible love for us. Thank You for Jesus, who came to live among us. May this Christmas remind us of Your love for us and our call to love our neighbors as ourself wherever we are. In Your grace and love. Amen.

A Star In The sky

Jueves, Diciembre 24, 2020

Una estrella en el cielo

Española

A Star In The sky

Scripture: Matthew 2:2b (NRSV) – “Where is the child who has been born king of the Jews? For we observed his star at its rising.

Message: Christmas means family to me. Everyone in one place, sharing and enjoying each other, is not as perfect as in the postcards, photoshops, or posts in the media. Just together, imperfect, loud and messy, but together.

What is it that makes us want to be together? That we have known each other for a long time, that we share and like the same things and food (Mom’s food), or that we have been placed in the same place to share life?

It is not about presents or gifts, not even the Christmas tree, and the truth is that we all wait the whole year to gather again. We mark calendars, we make plans, we travel for days, we get ready, we prepare ourselves, and we follow the star back to Bethlehem.

Last year Dad made us all wait two days before Christmas Eve, and nobody was to touch the Christmas tree, or the manger until my youngest sister finally arrived from Spain. He waited; we waited.

What binds us together? Decorating the tree, arranging the manger is not just for decoration, but they are part of preparing ourselves for the time when the star is in place. Then Dad and Mom gather us together to pray and sing at midnight. That, for me, is joy in the heavens and on earth! It is Jesus who gathers us!

This year things will be different, we will not be able to gather as we used to, not everybody will be able to come, some people may be absent, and many others will be missing. Still, as we follow the star home, we will wait for the arrival of baby Jesus united in the love that He represents to humanity and creation.

The Star is in the sky; are you on your way to meet Him?

Prayer: Creator of all, as we prepare ourselves at this Advent time, guide us to prepare our hearts, our minds, and souls to follow Your Star wherever it will find us. Let us be part of its light, its hope, and its joy during these strange times. Amen.

Mensaje: Para mí, La Navidad significa familia.

He Is Alive! I Am Alive!

Domingo de Pascua, 12 de abril de 2020

¡Él está vivo! ¡Yo estoy vivo!

Española

April 12, 2020

He Is Alive! I Am Alive!

Scripture: Matthew 28:6a (NIV) – “He is not here; he has risen, just as he said.”

Message: Easter reminds me of being with Ichthus (Greek acrostic meaning Jesus Christ Son of God Savior) young people in different places in Bolivia, dancing, celebrating and shouting with happiness and joy: “He Is Alive! I Am Alive!”

These young people arrived with signs of struggles with poverty, loneliness, low self-esteem, domestic violence and addictions. During a three day retreat they went through the process of the Paschal mystery, living the experience of the passion, the death and the resurrection of Christ. Passion to face the struggles, sins and mistakes of life. Death to understand and accept leaving behind their past life, which is heavy, draining, full of sin, pain and suffering. Only then the metanoia process is completed, as the miraculous transition from darkness to light, from death to life! Resurrection to a new life!

What is metanoia? Those who follow Christ turn from death to life, and that “turning” is His gift called “metanoia.” A transformative change of heart, a change of life!

Ichthus youth were newly converted youth, or youth leaders affirming Jesus’ call to follow Him.

Can you imagine their happiness and excitement? How did you feel the day you accepted Christ and his invitation to follow Him?

I tend to forget how amazing Jesus’ resurrection is, He defeated death! Life can get rough, painful and difficult; sometimes even hopeless and in grief, it even feels as if we have lost our lives, our reason for being. But through Easter morning, we are called to declare that darkness has never overcome the light, no matter what our darkness is called; death will never defeat life! We can stand up in Christ and celebrate!

Easter morning is celebration, let’s celebrate, let’s rejoice! Christ Is Alive!!! We Are Alive!!! You are alive!!!

Prayer: God, today we rejoice in the resurrection of Jesus! We rejoice knowing You love us so much and so dearly, even when we do not deserve it. You clean us, and You make us new. Jesus is alive and we know that we are too! Thank You for Your greatest gift! Amen

Domingo de Pascua, 12 de abril de 2020

¡Él está vivo! ¡Yo estoy vivo!

What Does It Mean To Be Together?

Española

Scripture: Matthew 18:20 (NRSV) – “For where two or three are gathered in my name, I am there among them.”

Message: Can you imagine a church of two or three persons? I always wonder if two or three is enough? What can we do if we are so few? Several times that was all the people that would arrive at a class, a meeting or even a workshop, making it difficult to go on. So, often the activity was cancelled; many times I found myself discouraged and with a sense of failure every time it happened.

These days, with the coronavirus pandemic, as we cannot see each other and meet each other physically I feel we have been called to be a church even if we are only one, two or three persons – wherever we are. How come? Sing with me:

We are one in the Spirit
We are one in the Lord
We are one in the Spirit
We are one in the Lord
And I pray that our unity may one day be restored
And they'll know we are Christians
By our love, by our love…

“They’ll Know We Are Christians” by Peter Scholtes© 1966.

In the name of God, we can do many things, even being a church that is spread physically with only one, two or three persons; how many are there with you? It is not just our physical presence that makes us be a church, it is the Spirit that binds us together, it is the Spirit that guides us through the dark days and then as individuals we will rise up together! It is His love that connects us as a community, as brothers and sisters, and as a family in Christ!

Hold in there, God is with you, with me, with us… we are His church!

Prayer: Lord of creation, You have shown us Your love every day of our lives. You have created us and made us Your beloved children. It is with gratitude today we feel the assurance that we are not alone, but connected, brothers and sisters in Christ. We pray that You will keep walking with us wherever we may be! Amen.

Make All New!

Española

Scripture: 2 Corinthians 5:17 (NRSV) - "So if anyone is in Christ, there is a new creation: everything old has passed away; see, everything has become new!"

Message: My favorite and most important holiday of the year is Christmas, not only because the atmosphere changes to a festive one, but for everything that Christmas means and represents in my life.

Christmas, Navidad in Spanish, means "family together." On Christmas Eve all my family gathers at my parents' home. Everybody arrives with decorations, some gifts, and most importantly with ingredients to cook a meal together... a traditional dish with my Mom's touch will be prepared while jokes, laughs and memories are shared and mixed along with the ingredients. Close to midnight, when food is ready, and everyone is seated at the table my Dad will lead a prayer and then we "attack" the sumptuous feast! When I look around the table and see all of my family gathered, I understand why God made me part of a family. Family together means indescribable joy and peace, God's grace between us.

This night is an active vigil to wait, anticipate and ultimately celebrate the arrival of the Christ child, Jesus. In my heart and mind is the remembrance of the blessed assurance that God became human to be with us, His highest expression of love. Jesus arrives to share our humanity coupled with the mystery of being God's Son; this marks the start of a new time where the old is left behind, and everything starts again as new.

Aviva Maria!
Viva San Jose!
Viva el que nacido!

He has arrived! Christ is Born!

Prayer: Father God as we prepare together to receive Your Son, Jesus on earth with us, renew our hearts and fill our spirits. Make us aware of Your everlasting love brought closer to us; with us and within us, as the affirmation of Your forgiveness and our rebirth which makes us all new! Hosanna in Heaven! Amen.
