Scriptures:
John 1:14 (NIV) – “The Word became flesh and made his dwelling among
us. We have seen his glory, the glory of the one and only Son, who
came from the Father, full of grace and truth.”
Isaiah 9:6 (NIV) – “For to us a child is born, to us a son is given,
and the government will be on his shoulders. And he will be called
Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of
Peace.”
Message:
Every Christmas Eve, my brother and I were allowed to open
one present from under the tree. Of course, our choice was based on
size, shape, and what happened when we shook it. We picked up every
box multiple times as our excitement built!
Sometimes the
best gifts come in odd packages. The Father gave us the gift of His
Son, who came wrapped in an unusual package. He chose to send the
One known as “Wonderful, Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father,
Prince of Peace” to the earth as a baby.
Based on
Isaiah 9:6, many believed the Messiah would come as a king to rule
the nations. However, this king came as a baby who needed to be fed
and cared for like any other baby.
The wise men
traveled hundreds of miles to see this gift sent from heaven. Herod
was troubled with the news of His birth. He placed no value on the
Father’s gift, and decreed boys under the age of two be killed. He
was unsuccessful, but thirty-three years later Pontius Pilate
destroyed the outer wrapping of the Father’s gift on the cross.
The leaders
of that day failed to realize the gift could never be destroyed, for
Jesus is the gift. His body was bruised and beaten, yet He lives on
and keeps giving to this day.
Today, we
have the opportunity to be a gift sent by the Father. Gifts may
come in different sizes, shapes, skin tones and languages, but the
packaging doesn’t change the value contained within.
Don’t let
what you carry stay wrapped up for a future unveiling. Share the
light of His love with someone. You could change their life and
discover how valuable a gift you are.
Prayer:
Father, we thank You for the gift of Jesus. Help us see others the
way You see them. Teach us to speak words that bring hope and peace
to those in need. Help us share Your love with others. Amen.
