Pat Moran
(now
deceased):
One of the best letters I have received in 15
years as your correspondent came from
Don Hubsch.
I will share it with
you verbatim. "I have finally retired (the second time) and have moved from
Westfield, N.J., to Del Webb Sun City, Hilton Head, S.C., to play golf and
bridge with my wife, Margaret. Our three sons are doing well. Our youngest went
to Lehigh (Class of '80) and still holds several track records there. He is now
treasurer for Fox Sports.
"I worked for ITT for 24 years and spent
most of the time traveling the world. I was in charge of the organization and
productivity of their 400,000 employees in 132 countries. I took early
retirement at 55 and went into the printing business with a friend of mine.
We
will be spending the Millennium in Budapest and I hope to get back to Lehigh for
the big one in 2002." Thanks, Don. I would love to get more "out of
the past" letters from your mates out there!
Mary Jo, wife of
Jim Johnston
(deceased),
and
my "assistant" correspondent, sent along a Christmas letter saying
that she and Jim, on a trip to Florida, met Payne Stewart, the pro golfer who
was later killed in that terrible plane crash. The "traveling"
Johnstons visited Spain, Portugal and Morocco and spent time in a lovely bed and
breakfast on Lake Lure near Asheville, N.C. This B&B is owned by one Jack
Stanier, a friend of 35 years. That name "rang a bell" with me, and I
checked with
Bill Smith
(deceased) my Sigma Nu and Lehigh (in house) historian.
Sure
enough, Jack Stanier (we knew him as Stew) was a Sigma Nu, Class of '51.
Evelyn and
Allen
Levan sent a Christmas
letter outlining their activities. Both are volunteers at a local hospital and
are youth leaders in their church. A trip to Germany, France and Switzerland is
planned for May 2000.
Mayo
Snyde (deceased) and Betsey ,
who send the best photo Christmas cards, sent one showing them with
their grandkids, Michael and Grace, having a meal with a fully costumed pirate,
complete with eye patch and sword.
I notice that Lehigh is 9-2 in wrestling and
ranked 11th in the country. Daz and I saw the Big Brown wrestle in the Desert
Duals in Tempe, Ariz., November 1999. They defeated Northeastern, Purdue and
Arizona State, all in the same day! I was impressed with the Lehigh squad and
particularly with Coach Strobel who kept encouraging his team from the bench and
after the match, win or lose! He has great rapport with his kids, and they came
to win.
Within six to 12 months, I will be sending out
a reunion newsletter, in the hope that we can generate a spectacular 50th in
2002. Remember how much fun the 45th was? Until then, thanks for the letters,
faxes and cards.
